BABY CAMEL from Nordic Yarn
Camel hair fibre is not half as well known as it ought to be! We thought we’d give those of you who haven’t knitted with it before some fun facts on this ethically-sourced exotic fibre. Our Fingering Weight (#1) Baby Camel yarn is definitely worth trying!
Camel wool has been used for so long that it is even mentioned in the Bible. This beautiful fibre has been used in the West since at least the 17th century, and camel yarn suddenly burst into popularity in the late 19th century in England. High-grade camel wool is nearly as soft as cashmere, and it is, in fact, often blended with cashmere wool to make luxury garments.
What does it feel like?
Camel wool fibre is finer than most merino (sheep wool), making it often feel just as soft as cashmere.
What are the benefits of using Camel yarn?
A camel’s hair is thermo-regulated to keep them warm in the cold and cool in hot temperatures – this translates into warm yet breathable fabric when it’s blended with other fibres.
What can you make with it?
Garments and accessories knitted up with camel yarn are lightweight and breathable yet warm which makes it perfect for wearing year ‘round. Our Baby Camel yarn is even soft and comfy enough for baby clothes!

“Camel Hair Yarn – A review of one the most luxurious fibers”
“Like with many other delicate fibers, the yarn is dyed unbleached. As a result, you usually find rather muted colors, though it seems to take in dye rather well. All camel hair yarn I ever sampled had a very uniform color (and no semisolid marbling at all). The natural hair has a golden tan color that may appear a bit greyish under direct light. Shades from red to brown are also possible.
The yarn does felt.
Camel hair yarn is incredibly soft, so knitting with it is quite blissful. The yarn glides effortlessly across your finger (it’s just so light!), it’s very soft to the touch, but…there is not a lot of fluff.
Because the undercoat hair is rather long, camel hair yarn can be spun quite well. As a result, stitches will appear quite uniform…quite the smooth surface (that) looks handknit but in a very elegant way.
The other thing I personally find remarkable is the fact that you can actually work cables and complicated lace patterns with it.
When you wash it, it does bloom up a tiny bit, but it’s not a huge halo or anything that drastically changes the appearance of the fabric. It doesn’t shed a lot either. So, two big, big bonuses for me.” – quoted from Norman’s blog
