This fabulous fingering weight yarn is an eco-friendly yarn! Little Nettle Soft is made from sustainable natural fibres – a blend of fine merino and nettle, yes - NETTLE! And, Ancient Arts uses a hand dying process with low impact techniques. Nettle is a highly sustainable low impact plant fibre resulting in a yarn that is warm in winter but breathes in summer and can be used for a wide range of projects. Nettle gives this yarn stunning lustre, drape, and great stitch definition, and adds a lovely contrast to the hand dyed colours as it takes the dye in a different way than animal fibres do, thus creating a ‘heathered effect’ to the yarn.
A note from Ancient Arts about their Little Nettle Soft yarn:
“One of the nifty things about the nettle is that it is softer than linen or hemp and very white. It gets softer and softer over time just like them, but has a silky handle right from day one. It’s strong and insulating. Plus, it is a highly desirable source of plant fibres as nettle can be grown without the use of a lot of herbicides/pesticides and without a lot of fertilizers. One of the real drawbacks to cotton production is the need for a great deal of all three of these things. Nettle is a very sustainable low impact fibre so it makes a great choice both for its characteristics and for its environmental qualities too! People have been using nettle to make clothing since the late Neolithic age which fits quite nicely with our Ancient Arts name. The nettle in our yarn is grown in several countries in Northern Europe and spun at a mill in Italy.”
Did you know...Little Nettle Soft is an all-natural, durable sock yarn?
That’s right; Little Nettle Soft is a durable sock yarn that contains NO synthetic fibres at all! The nettle provides durability to the yarn in the same way that nylon usually does.
Consider this: Socks have been knit for centuries before the addition of nylon to the yarn. So it’s clear that there are other, more eco-friendly alternatives to producing a durable sock yarn – like Nettle, for example.
