BABY THINGS

Monday, April 8, 2024 – Baby Things

LYS Day is April 27
Local Yarn Store Day is fast approaching and we have some exciting things planned for that week. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the event.

Let’s have some fun with colour!  Today’s baby projects give us ‘free reign’ with our options for colour choices. We can be as bold, as subtle, as daring or as safe as we want to be! The point is to have fun and be happy with the colours we are working with and that we will see our little ones enjoying.

Wren features contrasting colour trims and an adorable pocket for thoughtful touches that make this a great choice for special little ones in your life! With vibrant Vintage Baby Handpaint for the body and solid Vintage Baby accents, the combinations are nearly endless and easy to customize too!

STROLLER BLANKIE
by Andra Asars

photos © Andra Asars

Colourful stripes in interrupted garter stitch give this baby blanket cheer and warmth. While the pattern looks complicated, every row is the same simple knit-purl sequence. The fun is in the selection of colours for the stripes. I chose five colours, but you’re welcome to use more or fewer. – Andra

This stitch pattern creates a completely reversible blanket, and the colour play is fantastic! Choose as few as two colours, or use a multi-colour on its own. You can choose as many or as few colours as you like. Select highly contrasting colours, or subtle colour changes…either way your blankie will look amazing.

FINISHED SIZE: 28” wide x 24” long, as written

YARDAGE: 137m/150yd in each of five colours in DK weight yarn (#3)

YARN SUGGESTIONS

  • Vintage Baby (washable wool blend; 133m/50g; $6.98) – 1 ball in each of 5 colours
  • Comfort DK (synthetic; 165m/50g; $6.98) – 1 ball in each of 5 colours
  • Softee Cotton (washable cotton blend; 232m/120g; $7.98) – 1 ball in each of 5 colours
  • Snuggly DK (synthetic; 165m/50g; $7.98) – 1 ball in each of 5 colours

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download.

Gauge: 22 sts & 40 rows = 4” in broken garter stitch

This pattern is highly adaptable to any weight of yarn as long as we adjust our needle size according to the yarn we choose. AND…the finished size can be easy adjusted by adding or subtracting stitches (in multiples of 8) and knitting fewer or more rows as desired.

Here are just a few examples of colour choices from Ravelry

MOSAIC BLANKET
by Purl Soho

Photos © Purl Soho

What a joy it is to discover those moments in knitting when something seemingly intricate turns out to be very easy!

Those are the moments that knitting legend Barbara Walker strove to find as she first learned how to knit. Finding bobbins and multiple strands of yarn cumbersome when knitting colourwork, she developed a slip-stitch technique she called “Mosaic Knitting,” a clever way to create elaborate, colourful patterns using only basic stitches (knit, slip and occasionally purl). Soon, she was staying up late into the night inventing hundreds of original mosaic motifs, guided solely by her imagination.

‘With a motif from Walker’s Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, we created our Mosaic Blanket. As Barbara Walker herself discovered, there is beauty in simplicity… although you won’t have to tell anyone just how simple this Mosaic Blanket actually is to make!’ - Kristy

Our Mosaic Blanket has become one of our most popular patterns, which may surprise you, given how complicated it looks to make. But the real surprise is that even an advanced beginner can cast on for this knitting adventure!
