THREE MOHAIR PROJECTS
Monday, October 9, 2023 – Three Mohair Projects
While many of us enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather last week, it seems that the cooler, more seasonal temperatures are setting in. And with the fluctuating temperatures comes the challenge of how to dress. If you’re anything like me, you’re too warm one minute and too cool the next…uugh!
Don’t despair, in today’s email we are offering not one, not two, but three projects that are light and airy, but also warm and comfy. Three striking accessories that are easy to carry with and have on hand at the ready during these days of variable temperatures.

NEWLY RESTOCKED…
Have you heard that mohair is making a comeback?!? If you’re like me, you may have really missed it and are glad to see it reemerging once again. Or perhaps you’re not familiar with mohair, or you haven’t yet worked with it. Regardless, today’s your day!! YAY!
Let us introduce you to lace weight mohair, its benefits and uses. We carry two brands – Berroco Aerial (mohair/silk blend) and Katia ‘50 Shades of Mohair’ (mohair/polyamide/wool blend). Lace weight mohair can be used on its own or held along with another yarn and today’s featured projects do both. But before we get to the projects, let’s see the advantages of working with this type of yarn.
DID YOU KNOW…?
Lace weight mohair is an exquisite yarn known for its incredible lightness and delicate texture. It's a popular choice for knitters and crocheters seeking to create ethereal, delicate projects. Despite its featherlight feel, lace weight mohair offers surprising warmth due to its natural insulating properties.
This yarn is highly breathable, making it perfect for delicate, airy garments that can be comfortably worn in various seasons. One of its standout features is its ample yardage; each 25g ball of Aerial has a generous 260 mtrs!
In terms of cost, lace weight mohair can be on the higher end of the price spectrum due to the quality and rarity of mohair fibres. However, its efficiency shines through in the fact that a little goes a long way, thanks to its fine gauge.
When it comes to colour options, lace weight mohair offers a stunning array. It readily accepts dyes, allowing for a wide range of shades, from soft pastels to vibrant hues. This versatility means you can find the perfect colour to match your project's vision.
In summary, lace weight mohair is a luxurious yarn that combines lightness, warmth, breathability, ample yardage, and a broad spectrum of colour choices, making it a preferred choice for crafting delicate and elegant creations.
It’s with this in mind that we are featuring three projects, all from the same designer, that use lace weight mohair along with a fingering weight yarn to produce a gorgeous, useful accessory.
PROJECT #1…mohair & yarn held together throughout
This is a top down Yoke garment with a simple one row elongated stitch cable detail using the Indian Cross-Stitch.
The Whisper Popover is knit using lace weight mohair held together with a fingering weight yarn that produces a feather weight garment perfect for that extra layer where a sweater would be too much.
This is also a useful accessory over a coat adding extra warmth to the shoulders but without added bulk.

PROJECT #2…mohair & yarn used separately throughout
The Marianas Shawl is knit using fingering weight yarn and lace weight mohair. With a combination of Fan and Feather patterning, Garter Stitch and Bobbles, and alternating between the two yarns, you will always have something fun around the corner.
Inspired by the dynamic textures on the sea floor in the area surrounding the Marianas Trench. The shifting swirls of earth and sea coupled with a mystery yet to be solved instantly captured my attention.
“I used the Fan and Feather lace to reflect the continuous curving shape of the underwater mountain ranges, with the pops of higher elevations that are visibly reflected in the raised bobble stitch. The neutral spaces in between chasms are rendered using garter stitch and easily balance the pattern making it more visually compelling.” - Todwick Studios
Finished Size: 80” wingspan x 23” deep, blocked

PROJECT #3…mohair & yarn used separately AND held together alternating

Inspired by the surprise inner city beach that was revealed in Edmonton along the North Saskatchewan River.
“The linen fibre represents golden summer grasses, silk the shimmer of sand on water and the kid mohair the evening haze that is so particular of a Virgo evening in Canada – that haze just doesn’t happen further south. The custom River City colour inspiration complements this by showing sands, golds, blush and rose.” – Todwick Studios
The pattern is suitable for all knitters! The entire pattern is made up of all knit rows, with the exception of one purl row and only one pattern row! The yarns are used as follows – fingering, mohair, fingering and mohair held together, mohair, and repeat.
Finished Size: 20” wide x 48” long, blocked
Yardage
366 mtrs (400 yds) Fingering weight yarn (#1)
366 mtrs (400 yds) lace weight mohair (#0)
Pattern: We can purchase this pattern on your behalf for $6.00 CAD and have it emailed directly to you and stored in your Ravelry library, if you have one.
Gauge: 23 stitches = 4”
Needle: 3.50 mm (US 4) or size to obtain gauge
Mods: we cast on 72 sts using a 4.00 mm (US6) needle; this gives room for the stitches and mohair to bloom, especially in the section where the two yarns are held together and also makes for a softer fabric that still knits to approximately the same finished size.
