MKAL & THREE VESTS
Monday, September 25th, 2023 – MKAL & Three Vests
Hello everybody, I hope you all are enjoying the first taste of fall! This week is all about vests! Vests are great layering pieces when the weather is cool in the mornings and a little warmer in the afternoon. They are also a much quicker knit than sweaters, as there are no sleeves to worry about!
Before we get into the patterns, we wanted to share some info about a mystery knit-a-long coming up. Take a look below for more details!
From the Creator:
“Welcome to the 14th Westknits Mystery Shawl Knit Along (MKAL)! We are going to have so much fun knitting an out of this world shawl design. This year’s shawl will be a geometric explosion of color using a gradient of four colors. Join me as I guide you through the mesmerizing stitches of this year’s mystery shawl with video tutorials throughout October. Get ready to blast off as we cast on Thursday, October 5!”
Stephen West has just announced his 2023 shawl mystery knit-a-long (MKAL)! If you are not familiar with Stephen West, he is a knitwear designer known for his funky and innovative patterns. Every year he releases a new shawl mystery knit-a-long, packed with fun techniques and bold colours. They are a great opportunity to learn something new and to tackle a more complex project.
In a knit-a-long, sections of the pattern are released every week, so that everyone participating is knitting the same part of the pattern at the same time. This can make the project more manageable, as you are only focusing on small sections each week.
The Geogradient mystery knit-a-long will start on October 5th. There will be four clues that come out weekly throughout October, so by the end of the month you will have completed your shawl. The shawl design is a mystery, so each clue will be a fun surprise! Stephen will also be releasing video tutorials with each clue, to help guide you through the shawl.

Andrea Mowry’s new Tessellated Vest uses mosaic knitting and stranded colour work to create this unique pattern. It is worked from the bottom up, in the round. After the armholes are divided, the remainder of the vest is worked flat, and the shoulders are closed with a three needle bind off. This would be a great project to try out using different yarns together, and to play around with colour!

ROCKHOUND VEST
By Wool & Pine
The Rockhound Vest is the perfect combination of rustic and refined. Twisted stiches and cables create a beautiful texture and make for a captivating knit!
The Rockhound Vest is worked from the top down. First, each shoulder will be cast on and shaped separately using a provisional cast on. The shoulders are then joined for the back of the vest and worked flat down to the armholes. The front of the vest is also worked flat by picking up stitches from the shoulders. Once the back, front left, and front right have been worked to the armholes, the vest is then joined in the round for the body.
