BUTTERFLIES & PEPLUMS

Monday, August 28, 2023 – Butterflies & Peplums

If you’ve been into the store within the past week, you may have noticed a new model garment…it’s so gorgeous, it’s hard to miss!! If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for a treat as it is the feature of today’s email.

If you feel that the shawl is too daunting, please read on for two similar but smaller projects that you may feel are more attainable. Then, if you enjoy them, you can graduate to knitting the shawl. Or, you may choose to just dive right in and cast on for the shawl…the choices are yours!

And we have a special treat for all of our Crocheters…be sure to read to the end of this email for a delightful project to inspire you and get your hooks making.

BRAND NEW MODEL GARMENT…

The Butterfly Papillon Shawl has been a very popular project on Ravelry for a while and on my ‘to do (eventually) wish list’, but now that Judy has it completed and we all can see its striking beauty ‘in the flesh’, I think many of us here at London Yarns are feeling rather inspired to get going on it…we hope you feel the same way.

The pattern calls for 2x100g skeins for the MC and 1x100g for the CC (veins) of fingering/sock weight yarn (#1).

We have put together some colour combinations to stimulate your creativeness and help to you envision the wide variety of possibilities!

Note: the yarns shown below are not done up as kits, but are yarns that we have in stock and most can be ordered if we sell out.

ABOUT THE PATTERN…

This short row shawl looks lovely in either a long transition multi-colourway or in placed colours.

Instructions are expressed in a new and unique method which I developed and that most American knitters are familiar with. The instructions let you know when you are on the right side or wrong side and gives extensive stitch counts. For some, it takes away a lot of the confusion sometimes found in other expressions of short rows.

There is a lot of counting and this is very important. It is not a great project to knit while only partially focused in the short row sections. But there is also a lot of plain, garter knitting employed. For every short row section, there are rows in between that are simpler to execute.

This is a little sampler of the Butterfly/Papillon Shawl pattern.

It was created to make a beautiful little piece and dip your toes into the techniques of a larger project.

An “over the head” cowl pattern with a classic “V” shape! It is designed to be a fun, wearable piece of art.

© 2freckledroit

It employs short rows to create the shapes with both yarn over increases and M1R / M1L increases.

Another similar fun & colourful short rowing project…

A gorgeous pattern with lots of visual movement!

Being a rectangle scarf without any shaping, this project is much simpler than the Butterfly/Papillon shawl, due to the more static nature of the pattern.

© MarlaF

Although, it does still takes focus ;)

© Kissefrantz

It is appropriate for most knitting skills levels (you must be good at the knit stitch and willing to learn a couple new techniques). However, we each know our own skills and attentive abilities. This one requires much attention. If you are not generally adept at that, even if you have been knitting for a long time, this may not be your best choice of work.

© callisonknit

That being said, many beginner knitters have been able to make the more complex “Butterfly/Papillon”…as they were intent on completing it.
