TWO TEES & A SHAWL

Monday, July 17, 2023 – Two Tees & A Shawl

‘Two Tees & A Shawl’ seems to flow better than ‘A Shawl & Two Tees’, so we choose the ‘flowing’ title even though we are presenting the projects in reverse order to the title of today’s email. Thus, we are off to a great start! ;)

STONY STREAM SHAWL
by Stephen West

photos © Stephen West

This textural slip stitch pattern echoes the meandering waves and ripples of a stream for a relaxing and repetitive process.

Enjoy relaxing rows of cabled slip stitches and stony textures throughout this asymmetrical triangular shawl. Beginning at the corner of the wingtip, you will knit striping two different colours of fingering weight yarn. Increases at the edge expand the fabric toward the wide border.

You can easily customize the size of your shawl by knitting fewer pattern repeats for a smaller shawl or knit more pattern repeats for a larger shawl.

Finished Measurements
84″ / 213 cm wingspan x 41″ / 104 cm wide along triangle point, blocked.

Note: The size is customizable; the shawl starts at the smallest corner, making it very easy to shorten or lengthen as your yardage allows.

Yardage
MC – 732 mtrs solid or semi-solid Fingering weight yarn (#1)
CC – 549 mtrs multi, self-striping variegated or colourful speckled Fingering weight yarn (#1)

YARN NOTEthink about the MC as the framing colour and highlights the CC.

Gauge Note: gauge is not crucial, just as long as you achieve a fabric that feels good to you.

IONIA TOP
by Catherine Salter Bayar

Ionia is a drop shoulder pullover top, knit side to side that takes its fluted shape from its strong vertical lines worked in alternating yarn weights of garter stitch, punctuated at the shoulders and hem by eyelets.

Herringbone Trim adorns the shoulders, side seams and sleeve opening.

A top down tee, worked in a DK weight yarn that is suitable both for warmer summer months or cooler Fall days, depending on yarn choice.

The Selvedge Tee features a refined openwork ‘seam’ detail that frames the sloped shoulders, and continues down the sides of the slightly cropped body.

Top-down construction allows for adjustments to the armhole and body length to achieve the perfect fit.

A flattering, gently curved neckline and a matching hem are neatly finished with a drop stitch detail, and an I-cord bind off, adding interest to a modern, yet timeless wardrobe staple.

A simple Tee that uses many interesting techniques!

Techniques Involved – crochet provisional cast on, I-cord cast on, knitting top-down, knitting in the round, knitting back and forth on circular needles, german short rows, increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, I-cord bind off, grafting/kitchener stitch. There is no seaming involved and minimal finishing work after the garment is done. Once finished, blocking is recommended to open up all the stitch details.

Pattern Notes: The tee is worked in the round starting at the neck, with an I-cord cast on, and increases running down the shoulder seam detail. It’s then divided and worked flat to create the armholes, then joined in the round again for the body, with a decorative seam detail running down the sides. Short rows are worked for a gently curved back hem, and then finished with an I-cord bind off.
