SUMMER SOLSTICE at STONEHENGE

“As summer arrives in the Northern Hemisphere, the next stop on our tour of Famous Archeological sites takes us to the Salisbury Plain in south-western England. We are visiting the world’s most famous prehistoric monument at Stonehenge. This unique, manmade monument has fascinated scholars, engineers, writers, and artists for centuries.”

“The entire site is an archeological treasure trove of Bronze and Neolithic age artifacts, and includes some of the earliest burial sites in Britain. Important archeological finds of jewelry, pottery, and animal bones lead researchers to believe that the Stone Circle was used for important ceremonies and rituals.”

“The actual circle of stones that everyone thinks of when they think of Stonehenge was erected in the late Neolithic period, about 2500 BCE, about four and a half thousand years ago! There are two types of stones used in the circles; the larger sarsen stones, which are silicified sandstone boulders brought from the chalk downs in southern Britain, and the smaller bluestones. The Bluestones (so named because they appear blue when wet) are from an area in southwestern Wales that is 230 km (140 miles) away! Each ring of stones is generally uniform in size and shape, and each weighs approximately 25 tons. There are many theories about how the stones were brought to the site and set into the ground.”

“It is fascinating to learn that woodworking techniques were applied to the construction and used to hold the lintel stones in place They are fitted together by the use of tongue and groove joints, and held in place on top of the standing stones by the use of mortise and tenon. The lintel stones are even curved to maintain the appearance of the circle, while the upright stones were originally shaped to be wider at the top so that the perspective doesn’t change when viewed from ground level.”

“Although we will never know exactly how or why Stonehenge was built, we do know that the stones were deliberately placed so that they align with the sunrise at the summer solstice and sunset at the winter solstice. From the middle of the Stone Circle, you would see the sun rise just to the left of the Heel Stone. There is a large stone hole to the left of the Heel Stone that may have held another stone, and if that is the case, the sun would appear to rise between them. This alignment of the stones with the celestial movements, along with the monument's enormous size and meticulous craftsmanship, shows Stonehenge's immense importance for the agricultural, religious, spiritual and ceremonial needs of the people who built it.”

“Researching Stonehenge has been fascinating, and there is a lot more we could share, but we don't have room! To learn more about Stonehenge, please visit the English Heritage website. You can take a virtual tour inside the Stone Circle here, and you can learn more about the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge here.

“Just FYI - In previous (Covid) years, there was a live webcam feed of the sunrise at Stonehenge. We don't know if this will happen again this year, but it would be worth checking into closer to the date.” – quoted from Ancient Arts Yarns

NEW: 2023 PATTERN RELAUNCH WITH 19 ADULT SIZES!

Universal pattern – fits & flatters all shapes & sizes and we can be as creative or conservative with our colour choice(s) as we want.

This new re-launched pattern now includes an option for long sleeves too!

This seamless reversible tee is worked top down and in the round. Worked on larger needles, the fabric is airy and knits up quickly. It features an A-line shape and a V neckline that looks equally flattering when worn in front or back. The back (V side) is knit on the bias. The V shaping is created by symmetrical increases worked along the spine, and German short rows are worked to level out the front with the lower back.

The tee is designed to be worked with as few as one or as many as five colors and includes instructions for each color format. The pattern also includes a formula for altering the overall tee length while keeping the color band lengths the same.

NOTE: Yardages are given for EACH size for both short sleeve AND long sleeve versions AND for 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 colour options all in both yards and metres!! Wow…that’s a LOT of detail!!

‘The V-back Tee (fingering weight version) was my first design and remains my most popular pattern to date. Since its release, knitters have been asking for a version with a heavier yarn weight. At long last, here it is!’
