COTM & ‘SIMPLY FUN’

Monday, May 1, 2023 – COTM & ‘Simply Fun’

Welcome to the first day of May. Hey…that rhymes…LOL!

With a new month comes a brand new colourway & history lesson from Ancient Arts Yarns.

Our Zen Yarn Garden Trunk Show continues, including today’s feature of the Zen Merino Trio & Quartet Sets and two patterns to go with.

With today’s projects we are going to play with colour, texture and assorted stitch patterns that help the adventurous beginner to ‘level up’ and keep the experienced knitter entertained.

Pre-order now!

May’s Colour of the Month
Ancient Arts Colour of the Month for MAY is now available for pre-ordering…it is a LIMITED EDITION colourway, which will put you in mind of sailing the stormy seas.

The text and description below is quoted from Ancient Arts Yarns…

THE WRECK OF THE MARY ROSE

“Our next stop on our worldwide tour of famous Archeological sites is Portsmouth England, at the museum dedicated to the Mary Rose. The Mary Rose was one of the largest Tudor-era warships in the service of King Henry VIII of England, and it was the flagship of the fleet. It was launched in 1511 and was most likely named to honour both the Virgin Mary, and Henry's favourite sister, Mary Tudor. The second half of the name, Rose, also has dual significance - the Tudor Rose, and the Mystic Rose associated with the Virgin Mary.”

The Mary Rose Trust; Painting by Geoff Hunt

“Mary Rose was a purpose built, sailing warship, manned by 450 to 500 crewmembers during wartime. She was unique in that she was armed with heavy guns that could be fired through special gun ports, enabling her to attack broadside. This was a new design and changed the nature of naval warfare. After serving in naval battles for 25 years, the Mary Rose was substantially rebuilt in 1536 and returned to service.

On July 19, 1545, during the Battle of the Solent, the Mary Rose sank in the strait north of the Isle of Wight. Although the cause of her sinking is not known for certain, eyewitness accounts indicated that the Mary Rose had fired the guns on one side of the ship and as she was turning, her sails were caught in a strong wind gust. As a result, the still open gun ports were pushed below the waterline and the ship rapidly filled with water, sinking so quickly that over 90% of the crew drowned.

Although there was an attempt to raise the Mary Rose soon after she sank, and another in the mid 1800's, the ship remained buried and well preserved in the silt at the bottom of the Solent until it was re-discovered in 1971. As no records of English shipbuilding techniques used in vessels like the Mary Rose survive, the excavation of the ship would provide valuable insights into Tudor-era ship building and warfare.”

“Over 26,000 artifacts were recovered from the wreck, including weapons, tools, clothing, personal belongings, and even food. The remains of more than half the sailors were recovered and DNA examination gives evidence of the health and genetic diversity of the crew, many of whom were from the Mediterranean. Between the ship itself and the contents that were recovered, archeologists were provided with a unique insight into daily life aboard a navy ship.”

“The excavation of the Mary Rose was the most extensive maritime archeological project ever attempted. It required 4 years and the development of new techniques and technologies to recover and preserve the fragile remains of the ship and its artifacts. This included the use of specialized diving equipment, underwater cameras, and conservation techniques. The remains of the ship were lifted from the seabed in 1982, and the museum was constructed in Portsmouth, England to house the artifacts and provide a permanent home for the ship.

The 'Mary Rose", 1535
Painting by B.R. Stone

“The inspiration for this month's colour comes from the above painting. Our colour of the month re-creates the stormy sky, the churning sea, the white flapping sails, and the wet, slippery wooden decks of the Mary Rose. You can almost imagine yourself on board, with the smell of the sea in your face!” – Ancient Arts Yarns

The Wreck of the Mary RoseColour of the Month (COTM) colourway is dyed on Ancient Arts Socknado base, in fingering weight (#1); made of 80% Superwash Fine Merino Wool and 20% Nylon with 350m/100g; $32.98 each.

Now that the MKAL is finished, the complete pattern is available on Ravelry. As noted earlier and in the project descriptions below, we think that these projects are a perfect way to use the Zen Merino Sets and/or the Urth Merino Mini’s or a combination of both!
