April’s Colour of the Month

Ancient Arts Colour of the Month for APRIL is now available for pre-ordering…it is a LIMITED EDITION colourway.

The text and description below is quoted from Ancient Arts Yarns…

MOCTEZUMA'S HEADDRESS

“For April’s Colour of the Month we travel all the way from Ancient Greece to the ancient Mesoamerican city of Teotihuacan, the site of the Pyramid of the Sun. Located 40 km (25mi) northeast of modern day Mexico City, Teotihuacan was once the largest city in the Americas. The pyramid was built in about 200 CE and was abandoned about 750 CE. Centuries later when the Aztecs visited the site, they named it the Pyramid of the Sun, likely because it is situated so that it aligns along the perpendicular with sunrise and sunset on specific days.”

“One of the most well known artifacts from the Aztec era is Moctezuma's Headdress (also known as the Penacho of Moctezuma II), a stunning creation of exotic bird feathers and gold.

The headdress is first mentioned in 1596, when it was acquired by Austrian Archduke Ferdinand II von Tyrol. It was likely that it was sent to him by Hernan Cortes. It is unknown if the headdress actually belonged to Moctezuma II, but by modern times it has become closely associated with Moctuzuma and the Mexican indigenous identity.

The headdress is part of a collection in the ethnology museum in Vienna, called the Weltmuseum Wien. Despite continuous requests from Mexican representatives and activists for the return of the headdress, the Austrian authorities have refused on the grounds that the headdress is too valuable and too fragile to risk transporting it across the Atlantic.

The photo below is of the 1940 reproduction of the headdress which is in Mexico City.”

The photo below is of the original headdress, which has deteriorated and so appears smaller than the reproduction.

The following photos give you a close-up of the stunning detail, though!

Here is a detailed description of the headdress quoted from Wikipedia:

“It is 116 cm (46 in) high and 175 cm (69 in) across and has the form of concentric layers of different coloured feathers arranged in a semicircle. The smallest is made from blue feathers of the Cotinga amabilis with small plates of gold in the shapes of half moons. Behind this is a layer of Roseate spoonbill feathers, then small quetzal feathers, then a layer of white-tipped red-brown feathers of the squirrel cuckoo, Piaya cayana, with three bands of small gold plates, and finally two of 400 closely spaced quetzal tail feathers, some 55 cm (22 in) long. The quetzal feathers in the center of the headdress are raised relative to the sides. Leather straps attach the crown to the head of the wearer.”

“Here are some links if you want to read more about: BTW – You've probably noticed that we are spelling Moctezuma with a "c" and not an "n." Both spellings are Aztec given names, but the spelling Moctezuma (with the "c") is the name of the Aztec Emperor from 1440 to 1469, and the specific person to whom the headdress is supposed to have belonged.” – end of quote from Ancient Arts Yarns

Introducing…

MOCTEZUMA'S HEADDRESS Colourway

Ancient Arts has taken this month's inspiration from both the headdress as it is such a spectacular symbol of the indigenous culture, and the Pyramid of the Sun as it is the most visited archeological site from the Mesoamerican era.

The Moctezuma’s HeaddressColour of the Month (COTM) colourway is dyed on Ancient Arts Socknado base, in fingering weight (#1); made of 80% Superwash Fine Merino Wool and 20% Nylon with 350m/100g; $32.98 each.

To Pre-Order: call us at 519-474-0403 with your name and payment information and number of skeins needed. Pre-Ordering deadline is Saturday, April 15, 2023.

APRIL BONUS COLOUR
“JAGUAR GOD COLOURWAY”

This is a limited edition colourway that will be available ONLY in April.

“The language of the Aztecs was called the Nahuatl language. Aztec writing built upon previous Mesoamerican cultures and was an adaptation of previous writing systems that existed in Central Mexico. The Aztecs developed the technique of pictograms and wrote a variety of codices to transfer oral knowledge. These codices are works of art, and some showing the priests of Tezcatlipoca, the god of change who is associated with the Jaguar, are particularly striking and inspired a bonus colourway of their own!” – quoted from Ancient Arts Yarns

What is the Berroco DropShip program?

What started out as an ingenious solution to pandemic restrictions has now become an invaluable tool. Berroco 123 DropShip is a program that allows you to place yarn and pattern orders with us here at London Yarns and to purchase yarns by the ball/skein, so you can buy as many or as few of each brand and each colour as needed with no minimums, no maximums. As an added bonus, if you purchase yarn to make any of Berroco’s patterns, they will include the printed pattern FREE of charge, even if they usually charge for the PDF pattern.

So, if there is a Berroco yarn that you would like to work with, feel free to place your order with us.

**Since we can order as little as ONE BALL, it’s also a great way to test out, sample and swatch with new yarns before committing to an entire project!

The DropShip Program includes ALL of Berroco’s yarns as well as their partner brands – AMANO YARNS, and LOPI.

Please note: Because the DropShip Program is a ‘special order’ program, we require payment at time of ordering and all sales are final.
