ACRONYMS

Monday, February 6, 2023 – Acronyms

Acronyms…they are all the rage these days...and we have two acronyms for today’s email!

What are they?

They are…COTM and MAL.

And what do they mean?

COTM – Colour Of The Month
MAL – Make A-Long

Thus, as you probably deduced, today’s email has two offerings! And here they are…

Pre-order now!

February’s Colour of the Month

Ancient Arts Colour of the Month for FEBRUARY is now available for pre-ordering…it is a LIMITED EDITION colourway.

HOUSE OF THE TRAGIC POET

“Our theme for 2023 is Interesting Archeological Sites, and this month we invite you to come with us to southern Italy, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii. Pompeii was a wealthy town with a population of about 11,000, but it was buried under a thick layer (4 to 6 metres or 13 to 20 feet) of ash and debris when Mount Vesuvius erupted in the late autumn of 79 CE. The force of the eruption spewed a cloud of super heated gases and hot ash to a height of 33 km (21 mi) at a rate of 1.5 million tons per second, unleashing a level of thermal energy way beyond that of an atomic bomb!

The speed and devastating force of the eruption meant that the entire city – its population, their houses, markets, public buildings, everything! – was perfectly preserved under a thick layer of volcanic ash. Since its rediscovery in 1748, the entire area has revealed a fascinating amount of information about normal daily life in Ancient Rome.

Many homes of the wealthy inhabitants have been unearthed, and amongst them is the House of the Tragic Poet, which was discovered by archaeologist Antonio Bonucci in 1824. Although this is not the biggest, or most luxurious home to have been found, it's famous for the high quality of its elaborate mosaic floors and frescoes depicting Greek myths, such as the one shown below.

What's the difference between a mosaic and a fresco? Mosaics were harder wearing and could be used for floors and walls, whereas the less expensive frescos were used to decorate walls.

A fresco is the name given to a technique of mural painting which uses water to apply dry powder pigment to wet lime plaster. Once the plaster sets, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall.

A mosaic is constructed from geometrical blocks called tesserae, which are placed together to create the shapes of figures, motifs and patterns. Tesserae materials consisted of local stones, along with cut brick, tile and pottery to create the commonly used colours of white, black, blue, red and yellow.

The inspiration for this month’s colourway is this fresco located in the atrium of the House of the Tragic Poet. Note the use of the bright yellow, red, and blue pigments, with black and white as the accent colours.

And here's an interesting bit of trivia for you…the House of the Tragic Poet is the site of the oldest "Beware of Dog" sign ever found. This black and white mosaic of a chained dog baring its teeth is on the entrance floor and the inscription reads “Cave Canum”. You don't need to understand Latin to get the message!” – quoted from Ancient Arts Yarns
