January’s Colour of the Month
Ancient Arts Colour of the Month for JANUARY is now available for pre-ordering. It’s a LIMITED EDITION colourway that has a regal essence about it.

TUTANKHAMUN'S NECKLACE

“Our first stop is in Egypt at the Valley of the Kings, and the tomb of King Tutankhamun. On November 4th, 1922, the tomb was opened by an expedition led by Howard Carter and financed by George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon. At the time of Carnarvon’s death in 1924, there was a dispute between Carter and the government of Egypt as to who had control of the tomb and the artifacts, and in the end an agreement was reached that the tombs artifacts would not be split between them but would go to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

However, not all the artifacts ended up at the museum. Quite a few pieces of jewelry that were photographed at the tomb during the excavation went missing. It can be said that 100 years ago, the attitude towards discoveries such as this were less focused on preservation and more on personal notoriety and financial gain. As the attitudes toward cultural artifacts have become more socially responsible, there has been an effort to locate the missing items.

At a conference in Luxor in November 2022, Marc Gabolde, an Egyptology professor at Paul-Valéry University of Montpellier in France, identified some of this lost jewelry and where it might be. He compared images that were taken in Tutankhamun's tomb in the 1920’s to pieces that are in museums and auction sites. This allowed him to virtually reconstruct a broad collar that was on Tutankhamun's chest but is now in multiple pieces. Some of the gold pieces are in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, and some of the beads (shown below) have been restrung into a necklace now owned by anonymous owners.” – Ancient Arts

“Did the name Carnarvon ring a bell with anyone? It is the name of the aristocratic family that owns Highclere Castle, which is the setting for the fictional Downton Abbey. In 1987, it was revealed by a butler that the 5th Earl of Carnarvon (the same Earl who was Howard Carter's financial backer) had a secret room in which he kept a collection of Egyptian artifacts. Hmmm... a very interesting coincidence... Most of the collection was sold to pay inheritance taxes, but what remains is on display at Highclere Castle, which is open for tours during the summer months. So you can visit Downton and Ancient Egypt at the same time! LOL!” – Ancient Arts

A bold, textural and super cozy scarf designed by Tara Anderson. A fun ribbing stripe cascades against a foundation of garter rows. Knit primarily in cushy Osprey, the surprise guest from the addition of lace weight mohair brings an extra soft touch of colour and delight. Did we mention tassels? Eight glorious tassels bring an extra three-dimensional quality to Zephyr. Like a soft gentle breeze, Zephyr is a fresh take on a familiar accessory.

This scarf is knit width wise in a pattern of garter stitch with a 1x1 ribbing stripe. The ribbing stripe is moved to the other side of the scarf with a transitional row. You may want to use a stitch marker at the beginning and ending of the ribbing section to easily remember where to start the ribbing.

Finished Size: 8½” / 21 cm wide and 68” / 172 cm long, excluding tassels

Yardage:
466 mtrs (510 yards) of Worsted weight yarn (#4)
279 mtrs (3025 yards) of Lace weight mohair (#0)

Note: One strand of each of the above yarns are held together to give a variegated look in certain sections of the pattern.

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download

Gauge: 14.5 sts and 22 rows = 4” in garter stitch, after blocking

Needle: 6.00 mm (US 10)
