‘Where the Caribou Go’
Nunavut & Northwest Territories

“Come with us to the final stop on our Cross Canada Road Trip. If you haven't been up to the Canadian North and experienced the sights and sounds of life on the tundra, you must add a visit to this unique land to your Bucket List. It will be well worth the trip, we promise!

Tundra is the name given to the type of biome where tree growth is hindered by frigid temperatures and short growing seasons, and where the plant life is composed mostly of dwarf shrubs, sedges, grasses, mosses, and lichens. The soil is rich in nutrients, and beneath a layer of rocks and soil is the permafrost, ground which stays frozen year round. This far north there are only 48 species of land mammals to be found, but there are 1700 species of plants, and millions of birds migrate to the tundra each summer.

Summer is the best time of year to visit the north, for it is when the snow has melted and the days are long that you can see this landscape at its most vibrant. Because of the extra hours of daylight in the summer, plants grow quickly and even the non-flowering ground cover vegetation is lush and colourful.

In Canada, the tundra stretches across the north from the Northwest Territories (NWT) east through Nunavut and over to Newfoundland and Labrador. In the maps below, the NWT is on the left, and Nunavut is on the right.

Probably the most well-known mammal of the tundra is the Caribou. Caribou are large animals - they can measure up to 1.5m (5') at the shoulder and weigh up to 315 kg (700 lbs). Every year massive herds of Caribou migrate north for the summer. Some Caribou herds travel over 960 km (600 miles) to get to their summer grazing grounds on the tundra, where they can eat up to 5.5 kg (12 lbs) of plants and grasses each day!

Caribou are included on the Minister of the Environment's List of Wildlife Species at Risk, classified as "vulnerable to extinction." Their migratory routes are subject to disruption by human development (fences, land development) and they are also vulnerable to climate change which can alter the available food sources. Warmer temperatures also bring more parasites which can increase the chance of diseases spreading though a herd.

December’s Colour of the Month

So, why did we call December's Colour of the Month "Where the Caribou Go?" It's a tribute to the Arctic landscape that is found in the NWT and Nunavut. We were inspired by the unique landscape because of the beauty and resiliency of the eco-system, especially in the face of extreme temperatures and its vulnerability to climate change.

Also, the tundra is the backdrop to the rich heritage of some of the Indigenous people of this land, who relied on the caribou for their survival. These animals provided people with meat and grease, with hides and sinew for shelters and clothing, and bone and antler for tools and weapons. Caribou hunting was, and is, a very important part of Indigenous culture.” – quoted from Ancient Arts Yarns
