Monday, October 31, 2022 – Fun With Colour

This Fall has been particularly colourful, so much so that it has made the news! Hope you’ve been able to get out and about to take in and enjoy the spectacular colours on display.

Speaking of spectacular colours…today’s email is chocked full of colour too. Colourful yarns, both new and restocked along with colourful projects to make with said yarns. Enjoy!

PRE-ORDER NOW!

November’s Colour of the Month

Ancient Arts Colour of the Month (COTM) for NOVEMBER is now available for pre-ordering.

L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS, NEWFOUNDLAND

“Our next stop on our Cross Canada Road Trip is at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place that all of us at Ancient Arts want the chance to visit someday!

Located at the most northerly tip of the island of Newfoundland, this abandoned Viking settlement dates back over 1,000 years! Norse sagas written in the 14th century (the Saga of the Greenlanders and the Saga of Erik the Red,) recount even older oral traditions describing the settlement of a land called "Vinland" to the west of Greenland. If you've ever wondered how they made it from Greenland to "Vinland," the route was described in the Sagas and is shown in the map below (Helleland is now known as Baffin Island, and Markland is now called Labrador).

In the early 1960's, the husband-wife team of explorers Helge Ingstad and archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad were shown grass covered mounds by the local inhabitants of a nearby fishing village. Between 1961 and 1968, seven archeological digs revealed that the mounds were actually the remains of buildings that resembled the early Norse settlements in Iceland and Greenland, and which dated from around 1000 CE.

Over 800 artifacts have been recovered from the site and most of the items were for everyday use, such as fastening pins, a whetstone, stone oil lamps, and even a bone knitting needle and part of a spindle! The presence of the latter tools strongly suggest that there were women present, indicating this was intended to be a semi-permanent settlement and not just a staging area for further exploration.

Recent carbon dating of artifacts found at L'Anse aux Meadows has pinpointed 1021 CE as a year in which the Norse were present in the settlement. (Follow this link to see how we know that!) The existence of "Vinland" from the Sagas was confirmed, and this site on what is now called Newfoundland is the only authenticated Norse site in North America!

The actual archeological dig sites have been covered over again in order to keep them protected, but the L'Anse aux Meadows Heritage Site contains a re-created sod and timber dwelling for visitors to explore (see the photos above and below). There are many things to do, including listening to the Norse sagas, viewing demonstrations of iron forging, talking to Viking re-enactors, and seeing some of the original excavated artifacts.

Doesn't this look like a fascinating destination? You have to plan to visit in the summer months though, as it is only open to visitors from June through September. However, you can experience a little bit of Viking history right at home! Our new Herlig DK yarn is 50% Viking Norway wool (see the Bragg Creek Cowl kit offering below), and the sheep that were sheared for it are undoubtedly descendants of the sheep that provided fibre for the settlers at L'Anse aux Meadows!” – quoted from Ancient Arts Yarns

INTRODUCING...

L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS,
NEWFOUNDLAND Colourway
It was the photo of the sod-roofed dwelling in the photo above that was the inspiration for the November Colour of the Month, and you can see that we incorporated the green of the sod, the brownish tones of the dirt, the silvery grey of the weathered wood fence, and the blue of the sky (and a bit of the sea in the distance.)

This LIMITED EDITION colour is now available for pre-order – we only get ONE chance to order this colour, so don’t miss out!

The “L'Anse aux Meadows, NL” Colour of the Month colourway is dyed on Ancient Arts Socknado base, in fingering weight (#1); made of 80% Superwash Fine Merino Wool and 20% Nylon with 350m/100g; $32.98 each.

To Pre-Order: call us at 519-474-0403 with your name, payment information and number of skeins needed. Pre-Ordering deadline is Saturday, November 12, 2022.

Having fun with colour doesn’t always mean having multiple colours in one yarn. We can also have fun with solid colours too, like when using the Fairisle technique! Have a look...

BRAND NEW KIT (to order)…

BRAGG CREEK COWL KIT
by Caroline Sommerfeld

Photos © Stephanie Seufert

“This cowl is inspired by my love of Scandinavian knitting and the ways that Scandinavian knitters have incorporated natural elements into their designs. As a Canadian warm outwear is a must, but it's best of all when worn out cross country skiing or snow shoeing in the Rocky Mountains! The main Selbu motif in this cowl captures the mood of softly falling snow drifting among the pines as you pause on the trail, listening to the muted sounds of nature in the winter.” – Caroline (quoted from Ravelry pattern page)

Worked in the round in stranded Fairisle Stocking stitch, the Bragg Creek Cowl is tall enough to snug it right up around your ears and chin.

About the yarn…

The newest addition to the Ancient Arts lineup, HERLIG DK has an interesting and unique blend of wool! Consisting of 50% Viking Norway Wool and 50% Merino (from New Zealand & cruelty free), it promises to be both distinctive and magnificent!!

Herlig DK is worsted spun and plied with 3-plies to create a soft, smooth, bouncy, squishy, YUMMY yarn with great stitch definition!! Worsted spun means that the long staple fibres are aligned to be uniform and parallel during the drafting/spinning process, plus worsted spun yarns are stronger, smoother, more durable and less prone to pilling. If you want to read more about the difference between worsted spun and woolen spun, there is a nice write up here.

Ancient Arts HERLIG DK

NEWLY RESTOCKED…

Sesame is a gorgeous, self-patterning, worsted weight blend of wool, acrylic, cotton, and nylon. Each of these fibres takes the dye differently, producing an interesting marbled effect. Sesame has a subtle sheen and tiny little bobbles and flecks that run through the yarn adding to the texture and giving it a subtle tweedy effect

Sesame is multi-textured and multi-coloured treat to work with! And did we mention that it is machine washable?!?

In stock and available in 14 self-patterning colourways. Sesame comes in big 100 gram ball with generous 210m/230yds of yarn.

Sesame is the perfect versatile yarn for any project, from multi-season garments to accessories that can be worn year-round.

Have you had a chance yet to work with this scrumptiously squishy, colourful yarn? If not, now might be the time! We have just received a restock of ALL the colours aaaand…look at what Penny M. has been ‘playing at’ using Berroco Sesame!

(Alternating colours 7430 & 7459)

If only you could have felt just how light and squishy and FUN this scarf is. Penny has had so much fun making this scarf that she has started a second one using just one colourway #7407 (shown below).

Do you want to try your hand at knitting a multi-directional scarf made with Sesame? Here are a few free patterns to try:
  1. Multidirectional Diagonal Scarf by Karen Baumer
  2. Directional Colors Scarf by Lion Brand Yarn
  3. Short Row Scarf by Georgia Druen

Depending on your desired width and length, you could use anywhere from 1 to 3 balls of BERROCO SESAME. For a fairly solid-looking scarf, use a 4.50mm or 5.00mm needle. Or, for a less dense looking scarf with more drape, go up a needle size or two.

Another fun-filled, potentially colourful project…

ADAMA COWL
by Hilary Smith Callis

© Hilary Smith Callis

“Similar in shape to my Starshower cowl (shaped as a shawl, but mostly worked in the round - so it can be worn as a shawl, but without the ends dangling down), but in worsted weight yarn, Adama is a quick-to-knit shawl-cowl hybrid. Named for the Latin word for diamond (as well as, yes, the captain of Battlestar Galactica), it is shaped as a shawl, but the second half is worked in the round to create the illusion of a semi-circular shawl worn wrapped around the neck without ends to worry about tying. The majority of the cowl is done in a simple diamond lace pattern, with bands of Stockinette and Garter stitch breaking things up. Using a worsted weight wool- cashmere blend on large needles gives this cowl a cozy, rustic appearance and cuts the knitting time to practically nothing.” – Hilary

We knit our Adama Cowl (shown below) out of Berroco Millefiori; it would look just as amazing made with Berroco Sesame too!

2 balls of Millefiori #7856
(on display at the store)

One of the key features of the Adama shawl-cowl is the shape of it. It is designed in such a way that we get the full cowl effect from the front, but none of that bulkiness at the back of the neck, as shown below.

Pattern: we can purchase this pattern on your behalf for approx. $6.80 CDN and have it emailed directly to you.

Finished Size:
22.5” / 57 cm circumference at top opening
18” / 45.5 cm height at center front
9”/ 23 cm height at back

Yardage: approx. 275 mtrs / 300 yards of worsted weight (#4) yarn

YARN:
2 balls BERROCO MILLEFIORI (We used a total of 230 mtrs, so 3 balls would likely make 2 cowls, depending on your row gauge.)
or
2 balls BERROCO SESAME

Gauge: 15 sts and 22 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch

Needles: 5.50 mm x 60 cm (US 9 x 24”) circular needle or size to obtain gauge

About the yarn…

Berroco Millefiori is a self-striping, slightly thick and thin blend of wool and acrylic in a worsted weight. Available in a range of glowing variegated and marled colours, this soft, single-ply yarn is perfect for hats, shawls, cowls and much more.
