MESSAGE FROM JANET & FEATURE PROJECT

Monday, September 26, 2022 – Message from Janet & Feature Project

Here is a special message from Janet...

Family, Friends & Future
Hello and greetings to one and all! Today I am writing to you for several reasons… as the title of my article implies: about family, friends & the future. Family can mean many different things to all of us. I have my birth family, my married family, and my family here at London Yarns. I am also so very fortunate that I am best friends with my Mom Katy Lou, my husband Darrell, all the wonderful people I work with here at the store, my actual long time best friends, and as well, so many of you, my valued customers. These past few months and the couple of years that preceded them have made me realize more than ever just how important family and friends are.

With the passing of time, and what used to be the future now the present, it was time to make some life changes for myself and all of my families.

For those of you who like a short and sweet version, Darrell and I were fortunate enough to find our dream home in the north, and as a result we have moved out of the London area. Although I may not be physically present in the store, I continue to play an integral role at London Yarns. Katy Lou and I will celebrate 31 years of being in business together at the end of this week. THAT is a reason to celebrate! I LOVE MY SHOP and have for 31 years. I plan to host events in the very near future that I will be a part of either virtually or in person and of course will advertise these to all of you through Patti-Ann’s wonderful emails. I would love to hear from all of you. If you would like to reach out to me directly, please send me an email at info@londonyarns.com and put “Attention: Janet” in the subject line. We are as we speak; updating and bringing London Yarns into 2022 by implementing a brand new point of sale system, and the girls are running the shop like a well oiled machine! If you are interested in a more detailed account of everything going on, please keep reading……
For those of you who are new customers to the shop and have just discovered us let me offer you a warm welcome to the wonderful world of fibre therapy and hope that you enjoy everything that London Yarns has to offer. Cheers!

My London Yarns family HAVE ALL BEEN SO AMAZING through this transitionary period. I cannot believe the outpouring of love, support and loyalty that they have all shown me as they help me keep the store flourishing. It is bigger and better than ever! I cannot thank them enough for a job so very well done.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention them individually (and this is in no special order). I will start with the sad news that two of my gals are retiring. Louise and Terry have both decided to retire from the shop and spend time with their families, travel, and catch up on all the things they were deprived of when Covid hit and changed all our lives. I am so very sad to see them go, but at the same time so happy for them and their new adventures. Please, both of you be safe and enjoy to the fullest!
Carol and Cheryl joined us just over a year ago and with them brought a whole new dynamic to the shop. Their enthusiasm and talent have proven contagious for both me and customers alike. Heather joined us at the beginning of July and again, what an incredible addition she is to the shop. The ideas keep coming and everyone is motivated by the positive energy she exudes! I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Abigail who just started last week! Her strengths with computers, social media, and the love of our hobby will also be a perfect addition to the team.

Nancy is a knitter extraordinaire and simply loves the shop and helping all of you with your projects. She is always ready to jump in and help in any way, shape or form. Judy is our amazing Greeter and keeps our shelves tidy and well stocked and double checks all our on-line inventory. She is also a very talented hand knitter, machine knitter, crocheter and pattern designer.

Last but certainly not least, Patti-Ann has worked with me for 27 years (I can’t believe that PA) and somehow manages every week to send out what I think is one of the best email newsletters in the business. Way to go Patti-Ann! I am so grateful for each and every one of these fabulous people as they complete my London Yarns work family.

All these wonderful people recently went above and beyond to help me with a major disaster that happened at the shop in August. In one of the crazy thunderstorms that we encountered this summer, hydro was knocked out overnight for over 12 hours. Even though my cash register has battery back up, the hydro was out so long that the batteries even failed, and we lost ALL the programming in our cash register! When Carol & Patti-Ann arrived on the Tuesday morning, the poor machine didn’t even know its name let alone how to work. Fortunately, out of something bad something good arose and I am happy to report that this coming Wednesday we are launching a brand-new state-of the-art, point of sale system, a Clover Mini. As Carol says, “it is going to be legendary”!! We all can’t wait and thank you again, each and every one of you for all of your hard work helping me with imputing everything we sell into this little device.

For those of you who have been with me through the years, I have written an article with more details. Click here to read on.

And now please enjoy today’s feature project...

Today’s Feature Project is an interesting knit and comfortable to wear. Although it recommends a light worsted weight yarn, this pattern would work up well in just about any weight of yarn that you choose, as long as we adjust our needle sizes accordingly.

DUST DEVIL SHAWL

This asymmetrical triangle is worked flat starting at the left corner with increases at the beginning of every right side row. For a clean edge, the first stitch is slipped at the beginning of every row.

The simple twisted stitch creates a unique fabric with the illusion of desert twisters or “dust devils”.

The tassels are optional but if you choose to make them, save about 40 mtrs / 44 yds of yarn. This is included in the total yardage of the pattern.

Dust Devil is worked in two sections which makes it easy to adjust the size. Even the weight of yarn can be substituted, which will customize the shawl.

Finished Size: Asymmetrical Triangle: 36½” / 93 cm wingspan and 65” / 165 cm deep, blocked

Yardage: 685 mtrs / 750 yds of DK weight (#3) or Worsted weight (#4) yarn
Note: the pattern is written holding two strands of fingering weight (#1) yarn together, which translates to the equivalent of a heavy DK or light worsted weight.

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download

Gauge: 19 sts & 20 rows = 4” / 10 cm in left twist pattern, blocked

Needles: 5.50 mm x 80 cm (US 9 x 32”) circular or size needed to obtain gauge

Watch next Monday’s email for another BRAND NEW Colour of the Month offering from Ancient Arts Yarns.
