WELCOME TO SEPTEMBER!

Monday, September 5, 2022 – Welcome to September!

Can you believe that a month has already gone by?!?! Seems like yesterday that we advertised the Peggy’s Cove colour of the month and here we are now at September’s!!

PRE-ORDER NOW!
September’s Colour of the Month
Ancient Arts Colour of the Month for SEPTEMBER is now available for pre-ordering. It’s a LIMITED EDITION colourway that has a playful, colourful feel of a Festival...

GARDENS OF LIGHT,
MONTREAL, QC

“This month we return to central Canada for a stop in Quebec to visit the Montreal Botanical Garden. Every year in September and October the Botanical Garden puts on the spectacular Gardens of Light display which covers the Chinese, Japanese, and First Nations Gardens. Each garden is decorated in a unique reflection of their culture; the First Nations Garden shows the circle of life as symbolized by the Sacred Tree and the Japanese Garden is an illuminated pathway to provide visitors with a serene and meditative walk.

The Chinese Garden is illuminated with a display of Chinese lanterns, fantastical dragons, pandas, tigers, and other traditional symbols.

As impressive as the lanterns are in daylight, they are spectacular in the evening when they are alight with blazing colour. In fact, the best time to view the light display is at nightfall so that you can see them in both daylight and after dark (and we are told it is less crowded at that time, too!)” – quoted from Ancient Arts

INTRODUCING...

“GARDENS OF LIGHT,
MONTREAL, QC” Colourway
This LIMITED EDITION colour is now available for pre-order – we only get ONE chance to order this colour, so don’t miss out!

Ancient Arts September Colour of the Month inspiration comes from this daytime photo of fishing boat lanterns in the Chinese Garden (shown below). The vibrant sails are framed by the calming shades of green foliage and the serene blue sky.

The “Gardens of Light, Montreal, QC” Colour of the Month colourway is dyed on Ancient Arts Socknado base, in fingering weight (#1); made of 80% Superwash Fine Merino Wool and 20% Nylon with 350m/100g; $32.98 each.

To Pre-Order: call us at 519-474-0403 with your name and payment information and number of skeins needed. Pre-Ordering deadline is Saturday, September 17, 2022.

Wondering what you can make with just a skein or two of GARDEN’S OF LIGHT? Have a look at this amazing cowl…

by Janet, using Zen Yarn Garden Serenity 20 (1 skein)

Janet has made this cowl and every time she wears it in the store, she receives numerous compliments and seeing her wearing it usually inspires others to make one of their own.

And as well, our Cheryl has made not one, not two, but THREE of these cowls and loved it each and every time!!

Here she is wearing our exclusive Zen Yarn Garden Custom Colourway, called “Blue Jay”.

by Cheryl using Zen Yarn Garden Superfine Fingering (1 skein)

And below is a photo of the one she made from our very own Zen Yarn Garden Custom Colourway, called “Fishing Season is Over”.

And for the third cowl (not pictured) that Cheryl made she used one skein of Uneek Fingering that she say is “LOVELY”!

A note about the Cowl from the designer, Hilary Smith Callis….

Starshower is another of the shawl-cowl hybrids that I can’t get enough of lately. It is shaped as a shawl, but mostly worked in the round - so it can be worn as a shawl, but without the ends dangling down.

by CaroKnitts

The simple Open Star stitch pattern perfectly complements a fingering weight yarn, though the pattern would work just as well with a favorite semi-solid or variegated sock yarn. Adding a touch of Sparkle (like Stellaris or Katia 10 Shiny Shades) is encouraged, but not required.

One of the key features of this shawl-cowl is the shape of it. It is designed in such a way that we get the full cowl effect from the front, but none of that bulkiness at the back of the neck, as shown below.

39"/ 99 cm circumference at bottom opening

Gauge (blocked):
18 sts & 27 rows = 4”/ 10 cm in Open Star Stitch
19 sts & 32 rows = 4”/ 10 cm in Garter Stitch
**Exact gauge is not crucial, but any major differences will affect the size of the finished cowl and amount of yarn needed.

Needles: 4.00 mm x 40-60 cm (US 6 x 16”- 24”) circular or size needed to obtain gauge

If you like Starshower, but want something a bit quicker to knit, check out Adama -- similar in shape, but in worsted weight (#4) yarn, the knitting time is practically nothing!

ADAMA COWL
by Hilary Smith Callis

‘Similar in shape to my Starshower cowl, but in worsted weight yarn, Adama is a quick-to-knit shawl-cowl hybrid. Named for the Latin word for diamond (as well as, yes, the captain of Battlestar Galactica), it is shaped as a shawl, but the second half is worked in the round to create the illusion of a semi-circular shawl worn wrapped around the neck without ends to worry about tying. The majority of the cowl is done in a simple diamond lace pattern, with bands of Stockinette and Garter stitch breaking things up. Using a worsted weight yarn on large needles gives this cowl a cozy, rustic appearance and cuts the knitting time to practically nothing.’ - Hilary

RESTOCKED…

We have just restocked our 30th Anniversary Custom Colourway “Thirty, Flirty and Fabulous” on Ancient Arts Socknado AND we have also brought in the same colourway on Ancient Arts Little Nettle Soft.

“Thirty, Flirty and Fabulous” is another fun colourway that would make an interesting Starshower Cowl knit up!

May the ‘Stars Shower’ you with ‘Gardens of Light’.
Patti-Ann
