PEGGY'S COVE, NS

We continue our Cross Canada Road Trip in the Maritimes with a stop at another world renowned tourist destination - Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia. Peggy's Cove is just 43 kilometers (26 miles) southwest of the provincial capital of Halifax, and is one of the numerous small fishing communities located on the Chebucto Peninsula.

When people refer to Peggy's Cove it calls to mind the two most photographed spots in the community - either the village on the cove or the lighthouse on the point. The Peggy's Point Lighthouse is one of the most well known and recognizable lighthouses in the world. The original wooden lighthouse was built in 1868 and it had a kerosene oil lamp and a catoptric reflector on its roof to provide the beacon. That little lighthouse was replaced in 1914 with the familiar octagonal, concrete reinforced tower that stands 15 metres (49 feet) high.

Each year thousands of tourists visit the Lighthouse and wander onto the granite rocks at the ocean's edge. However, there is always the chance that an unpredictable rogue wave will wash the unwary tourist off the rocks. You'd be better off staying on the boardwalk to take your selfies.

Perched all around the edges of this picturesque little harbour are weathered fishing sheds and piers that look like they have been there for years. They most likely have, as in order to preserve the villages’ rustic charm and the entire area's rugged beauty, the Peggy's Cove Commission Act was passed in 1962. The Act restricts development in the village itself, and prohibits development in an area of about 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) surrounding the cove. There are also restrictions on who can live in the community to prevent inflation of property values for the full-time residents, many of whom are still involved in the lobster fishery.

The community of Peggy's Cove marks the eastern point of St. Margaret's Bay. The explorer Samuel de Champlain named St. Margaret's Bay after his mother, Marguerite Le Roy, and it is likely that since one of the diminutives of Margaret is Peggy, this little cove was called Peggy's Cove.

There are other stories though, about a little girl or young woman who was the sole survivor of a shipwreck. The young woman was either named Peggy or given the name by others, and she eventually married one of the first residents of the cove and became known as "Peggy of the Cove", and thus the place became "Peggy's Cove."

Introducing…

“PEGGY’S COVE, NS” Colourway
This LIMITED EDITION colour is now available for pre-order – we only get ONE chance to order this colour, so don’t miss out!

Our August colour of the month was inspired by photographs taken from a sunset boat tour of St. Margaret's Bay and seeing the Peggy's Point Lighthouse bathed by the setting sun (shown below).

You can almost feel the calmness of the water and the serene quiet of twilight as the sun sets at the end of a wonderful day.

Isn't this a lovely and peaceful combination of colourways?
