July’s Colour of the Month

Ancient Arts Colour Of The Month (COTM) for JULY is now available for pre-ordering. It’s a LIMITED EDITION colourway that has an east coast vigor…

BAY OF FUNDY, NB

We are going from one of Canada's most famous water related tourist attractions (last month’s Niagara Falls) to the other! The next stop on our Cross Canada Road Trip is the amazing Bay of Fundy which is located between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The Bay of Fundy extends 151 km (94 miles) inland, it is 52 km (32 miles) wide at the entrance, and the average depth is 66 metres (216 feet)!

The Bay of Fundy has the highest tidal range in the world, about 16 metres or 52 feet (that's a 5 storey building), while the average tidal range worldwide is only about one metre (3.3 ft). The photo below gives you an idea of the difference between low and high tide, and watching the tides change from any spot on the coastline is an awe-inspiring experience.

However, the Bay of Fundy is renowned not only for its tides but also for geological discoveries such as dinosaur fossils, and marine life, especially whales. If you visit the Bay of Fundy, a whale watching tour is something that you shouldn't miss. (It's an experience that children will remember forever!)

Because of tidal resonance in the funnel-shaped bay, the tides that flow through the channel are very powerful. In one 12-hour tidal cycle, about 100 billion t (110 billion short tons) of water flows in and out of the bay! If you would like to see a short time lapse (1:20 min) of the incoming tide taken over a 6 hour period, this YouTube video by Daily Motion will give you an idea of the scale and speed of the change.

One of the best places to visit at the Bay of Fundy is the Hopewell Rocks. Also known as the Flowerpot Rocks, these amazing rock formations are sea stacks which were caused by tidal erosion. At low tide, visitors can walk on the floor of the bay, and while the tide is high enough, you can take a kayak tour around the Flowerpots!

One skein shawl project…

Speaking of ‘supporting local’, let’s revisit a shawl pattern designed by Cally Monster and created to support our Local Yarn Stores (LYS’s). It’s a fun knit that uses as little as one skein of fingering weight yarn.

LOVE YOUR STORE SHAWL

‘I don’t have a Local Yarn Store (LYS)…my nearest yarn fix is 45 minutes away and that is if California traffic is good!!!

So a (‘Big Thank You Contest’) to celebrate all local yarn stores is the perfect time to support the people who provide us with the environment to be creative, learn new things, and a place where we can relax and be a part of a community that shares our passion.

Love Your Store is the perfect … shawl designed to support your Local Yarn Store. A garter top starts this delicate knit opening up to a lacy mesh band and decorative slip stitch edge. Share the love and knit one with all your friends at your local yarn store.’ – quoted from Ravelry

Pattern is written in text only without charts.

Finished size: 60” wingspan x 22” deep at the point after blocking

Yardage: 366 mtrs (400 yds) of Fingering weight (#1) yarn

May we suggest using…?

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download

Gauge: 19 sts = 10 cm in garter stitch, blocked
Note: Although gauge is not crucial for this project, it will affect the finished size and yarn requirements. A looser gauge will result in the use of more yarn.

Needles:
4.00 mm x 80 cm (US 6 x 32”) circular or size needed to obtain gauge
5.00 mm (US 8) knitting needles for casting off

While we did indeed enjoy our weekend off, we now return to our regular business hours this week of Tuesday to Saturday from 11 – 4pm.

Hope to see you then,
Patti-Ann
