TRAVEL PROJECTS

Monday, June 13, 2022 – Travel Projects

Here we are nearing the middle of June and many are contemplating holidays, planning for the cottage/camper or travelling. So for today’s email we are focusing on projects that are portable, easy to memorize and are great ‘travel projects’. In the last few weeks, we’ve been focusing on finer weight yarns but just to change things up a bit, in today’s email we are going to look at using worsted weight yarns (#4). B-U-T some of the projects we are featuring can be made with ANY weight of yarn, if you prefer.

NEWLY RESTOCKED…

We’ve just received a restock of Nordic ECO CASHMERE DK, including a couple of backordered colours that have arrived for the very first time, like soft white and grey mélange, for a total of nine shades in stock.

ECO CASHMERE DK SHADE CARD

Now, onto our ‘travel projects’…

Remember that these four projects lend themselves well to working with a variety of yarn weights. Although written for worsted weight (#4), you will notice in some of the pictures that either a lighter or heavier weight of yarn was used, the choice is yours! If using a different weight of yarn than suggested, be sure to adjust your needle size accordingly – as an idea, use a needle size that is approximately 0.5 up to 2 full sizes larger than the ball band recommends, depending on the project.

Three Mosaic Designs & Four Sizes

Mosaic knitting has the appearance of elaborate, 2-colour knitting but it is all accomplished with slip stitches, using only one colour per row. These patterns have a woven, architectural look to them and won’t curl because the nature of mosaic knitting produces a fabric that lays flat.

This pattern includes directions for a scarf, shawl, baby blanket and afghan in each of the 3 design motifs. Mosaic patterns are charted.

Choose two colours with enough contrast to highlight the patterns.

Finished Sizes – Scarf (Shawl, Baby Blanket, Afghan):
Width: 6 (18, 36, 48)”
Length: 54 (60, 36, 48)”

Yardages – Scarf (Shawl, Baby Blanket, Afghan):
Light Colour: 200 (600, 700, 1300) mtrs of Worsted weight yarn (#4)  [or another weight of yarn]
Dark Colour: 200 (600, 700, 1300) mtrs of Worsted weight yarn (#4)  [or another weight of yarn]

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download

Gauge: 18 sts and 22 rows = 4” in Mosaic Garter Stitch
Needle: 5.00 mm x 100-120cm (US 8 x 40-48”) circular (you will be casting on stitches for the length)

A ‘Comfort Shawl’

Janet wrote this pattern to provide comfort to both the knitter and the wearer (even if that person is one & the same).

The stitch pattern is very simple and easy to memorize. This is a great project to knit while traveling or at the camper/cottage.

The finished size is incredibly easy to adjust (using a multiple of 6 +3). Add more stitches to make a lap throw or blanket, or use less stitches to make a scarf.

The wonderful thing about this fun stitch pattern is that it will work with any weight of yarn, and any colourway! Remember to adjust your needle size according to your chosen yarn – use 1-2 full sizes larger than the ball band recommends.

Finished Size (as written): approx. 24” wide x 65”- 70” long, easily adjustable

Yarn (as shown):
620 mtrs Chunky weight (#5) yarn; shown in Marble Chunky
8.00 mm knitting needles

Pattern is a free download from London Yarns

This is a simple, easy to wear cowl designed with the beginner knitter in mind, but suitable for all skill levels. Wear it wrapped once or twice around the neck to style.

Stitch patterns consist of garter stitch rows and simple eyelet stitch sections. The cowl is knit flat and seamed. If you choose not to seam it, then you can enjoy wearing it as a scarf.

Finished Size: approx. 7½” wide x 52” long before seaming

Yardage: 274 mtrs (300 yds) of Worsted weight yarn (#4)  [or another weight of yarn]

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download

Gauge: 16 sts = 4” in garter stitch

Needle: 5.50 mm (US 9) knitting needles

This shawl will knit up super quick using a worsted weight yarn and be very comfortable over your shoulders on a cool summer evening.

The garter stitch shawl body is worked first (makes for GREAT car/cottage knitting!!). The edging is then worked, and knit onto the body of the shawl as you go – so no sewing! Stitch pattern is both written and charted.

The garter stitch section is framed with a short row edging that combines both lace and cables...this will be an interesting knit!

Finished Size: approx. 70” wingspan x 18½” center depth, after blocking

Yarn: 797 mtrs (872 yds) of Worsted weight yarn (#4)  [or another weight of yarn]

This pattern is available as a free Ravelry download

Gauge: 12 stitches = 4” in stocking stitch, after blocking

Needles:
6.00 mm x 80 cm (US 10 x 32”) circular
Cable needle

So, which of these projects will you choose to make? Or add to your ‘queue’? Keep in mind that any of them would be a wonderful gift to share with friends and family.

Many thanks to Amy E. Anderson, Åsa Buchta, Vanessa Ewing and Janet for sharing their lovely patterns with us free of charge and inspiring us to work with gorgeous yarns and to further our knitting skills.

Happy Making!
Patti-Ann
