CAMARADERIE INSPIRATION

Monday, May 16, 2022 – Camaraderie Inspiration

Have you ever fell in love with a project that someone else is making? Ever been inspired to make it yourself?!? It happens A LOT!! Being Makers we take encouragement, inspiration and even courage from each, ‘if they can do it, maybe I can too.’ I guess that’s why Ravelry is so popular…we can see what others are doing, take an interest in their crafting and become motivated to do the same or something similar.

That is exactly what happened this week!! We came across a project on Ravelry that has got our creative juices flowing. Adrienneff on Ravelry has just posted her version of a Summer ‘Nightshift Shawl’ and it is glorious!!

We all love the versatility, the texture and the colour-play of Andrea Mowry’s Nightshift shawl. How would you like to take it to the next level? Or shall we say, to the ‘next season’??

So many of us have made at least one Nightshift, if not more than one, but usually with a warm fibre - wool and wool-blends….until now!

Let’s look at knitting up a Nightshift for Summer!

What a novel idea! If we follow Adrienneff’s innovation on a classic design, then we can have the joy of wearing Nightshift throughout the summer months too. Knit in a cotton or cotton blend yarn, it would also be great to keep that A/C chill off our shoulders!

Adrienneff’s Nightshift summer weight version used 2 contrasting colours of Berroco Summer Sesame and was knit 4.50 mm x 80 cm circular needles.

Finished Size: 55″/140cm wide (tip to tip, measured across top) x 31″/79cm deep

Shown here knit with Summer Sesame #5250 Sand as the main colour (MC) and #5252 Kaleidoscope as the contrasting colour (CC – shown in the ‘blips’).

Notes from Adrienneff:
  • We used almost ALL of the contrast colour (kaleidoscope) - you may want to get a second ball just in case
  • Because we only used 2 colours, you can do the set-up and then go to the next section, section 1 on page 4 of the pattern (40 rows) and repeat it 9 times total.
  • Total weight of shawl is 257g with Summer Sesame
  • quoted from Ravelry page

When choosing our own colourways, here’s a little tip:
Choose a neutral Summer Sesame colour for the MC, like Sand, Ocean, Alloy or even Orchid. Then pick your favourite colour as the CC.

Summer Sesame has a slight nubby texture to it that boosts the effectiveness of the slip stitch patterning and enhances the colour play.

So then, what do we need to make our own Summer Nightshift? Well, we have a few options for you.

The first, of course, is to order Berroco Summer Sesame from us. This yarn is not in-stock, but can easily be ordered, by the ball, with no minimums. Ordering it in will give us a week or so and allow us enough time to finish up our current project, just in time to cast on our new Nightshift!

Choose two contrasting colourways (2 balls MC and 1+ ball(s) CC – see Notes above), grab your 4.50 mm x 80 cm circular needles and a copy of the pattern (which we can purchase for you if needed).

TO ORDER: Come in or call in (519-474-0403) with the name of yarn, colour numbers and number of balls needed, along with your name and payment information.

The other options for using our in stock yarns, including kit options, are to follow.

About the yarn…
Berroco Summer Sesame is a soft, light-weight, machine washable, easy to work with cotton blend yarn with self-patterning colourways and a bit of texture that gives depth of interest to the finished fabric.

So now comes the fun part…
  1. Do you like to choose colours for yourself?
  2. Or do you prefer some help along the way?
  3. Or do you prefer the colour to be pre-selected?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these three questions, then we have just what you need!
  1. For those that like to pick colours themselves, click on the links given further down in this email to see the shade cards, or come into the store to view them in person.
  2. For others that prefer some helpful guidance, we are happy to assist.
  3. And for those that like a ‘grab and go’, readymade kit…we have these available too.

Readymade Kit Choices…

Alternatively, to really make your favourite choice of multi-coloured yarn come alive, consider pairing it with a neutral tone like navy, grey, black, white, ecru, etc. Doing so will make the multi’s ‘pop’ against a background that will nicely frame the variety of shades.

**NOTE: If  you don’t see a kit here that appeals to you, we would be happy to help you pick out a different kit, as the colour combinations are endless!

In-stock yarns for Summer Nightshift…

If you prefer to see colours and textures in person and want to get started right away, then we have a number of suitable suggestions to make your own Summer Nightshift.

They are...
  • Marmel – self-patterning; 55% Cotton, 42% Acrylic; 250m/100g; $19.98. LOVE! the texture of this yarn!
  • Uneek Cotton – self-patterning; 100% Mercerized Cotton; 250m/100g; $19.98. Such delicious shades!!

  • Softee Cotton – solids; 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic; 232m/120g; $7.98.

  • Versailles – solids; 97% Viscose, 2% Polyester, 1% Polyamide; 100m/50g; $9.98.

For main colour we need a minimum of 472 mtrs and for the contrast, a bare minimum of 270 mtrs. Purchasing extra yardage, above the ‘minimums’, gives us some wiggle room in case our stitch, or especially our row gauge is off a bit – then we won’t be playing yarn chicken AND we will also have the ability to make the shawl a bit larger.

We hope you had fun reading through today’s email and now feel motivated to cast on your own version of Summer Nightshift. Remember, if you need us, we are always here and always happy to help you pick out and pair up yarns and colours.

Have a Happy Monday!

Patti-Ann
