For those of you that may not be familiar with this unique company, here is a little background.
About Ancient Arts Yarns…
“Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts is an artisan hand dye company drawing our inspirations from nature, art, and our love of stories. We use only premium bases ethically sourced, ethically milled, and spun exclusively for us. Our yarns are ideal for knitting, crochet, weaving, and any other craft requiring a top-quality yarn. All yarns are individually hand dyed in small dye lots using environmentally conscious dyes and dyeing practices.

Many crafters want something just a little different, but don’t want to sacrifice quality, price, or time, and they want to feel good about what they are using. This is where Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts come in. All our yarn bases are carefully selected to be of the highest quality, while maintaining prices that are affordable.

Our yarns are custom hand dyed to order with low impact environmentally friendly dyes, and come in dye lots of up to 1.2 kilos of yarn. The number of skeins in each lot vary from 4-24 depending on type of yarn, and colourway.” –

NEW KIT IN STOCK…

WINTER LAKE STOLE KIT
from Ancient Arts Yarns

The slip-stitch lace pattern of Caroline Sommerfeld’s simple but elegant stole echo the gentle movement of water in their undulations. The colours gently fade and shift from the silver grey of the water in winter to the pink of the sunrise on the horizon.

Four stitch patterns – undulating-waves lace, slip-stitch rib, Bargello slip-stitch fade, and slip-stitch fade band – play out over Ancient Arts’ Nettle Soft DK hand-painted canvas.

About the yarn…
This fabulous DK (#3) weight yarn is an eco-friendly yarn! Nettle Soft DK from Ancient Arts is made from sustainable natural fibres – a blend of fine merino and nettle, yes - NETTLE! And, Ancient Arts uses a hand dying process with low impact techniques. Nettle is a highly sustainable, low impact plant fibre resulting in a yarn that is warm in winter but breathes in summer and can be used for a wide range of projects. Nettle gives this yarn stunning lustre, drape, and great stitch definition, and adds a lovely contrast to the hand dyed colours as it takes the dye in a different way than animal fibres do, thus creating a ‘heathered effect’ to the yarn.

About the yarn…
Lascaux Fine from Ancient Arts is a delightful blend of heritage and modern sheep fibre spun into a 2-ply fingering weight (#1) yarn. It is a perfect combination of Old and New World wools, incorporating the bounce, spring, and cushiness of Manx Loaghtan Wool (old breed sheep) and the drape and lustre of Punta Arenas (modern breed).

The heritage breed sheep is Manx Loaghtan, found only on the Isle of Mann, and the modern breed is the Punta Arenas from South America. The natural colour of this yarn is a light brown, so it has a heathered undertone when it is dyed, and although it looks rustic, it actually knits up exceptionally soft! This is a great yarn that feels wonderful against the skin, making it suitable for garments like mitts, sweaters and even lace shawls!

Note: Lascaux has its own unique colour palette due to the natural colour of the yarn.

Pre-order now!

Ancient Arts Colour Of The Month (COTM) for MAY is now available for pre-ordering. It’s a vibrant colourway called…

The Forks Market
Winnipeg, Manitoba

“The next stop as we head east on our Road Trip is in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The provincial capital is located near the longitudinal centre of North America (how cool is that!) at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, near Lake Winnipeg, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. The name Winnipeg comes from a Cree word meaning "muddy waters.”

When we were picking a place in Manitoba to visit, our assistant dyer Stephanie said “If you ever go to Winnipeg, you *have* to go to The Forks Market.” She went on to describe the market, the food, the ambience… we were ready to pack our bags then and there! Then she showed us (the above) photo of the Market and there was the inspiration for this month’s colourway!

“The Forks Market – Winnipeg, MB” colourway

The “The Forks Market – Winnipeg, MB” Colour of the Month colourway is dyed on Ancient Arts Socknado base, in a fingering weight (#1). Made of 80% Superwash Fine Merino Wool and 20% Nylon with 350m/100g; $32.98 each.

About The Forks Market…
The Forks is an area in downtown Winnipeg that was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1974. The 14 acre (0.021 sq mi) site is important for its historical and cultural significance - humans have used this area as a gathering place for six thousand years!

The Forks Market was originally two adjacent horse stalls that were owned by competing railway businesses. The market area was created  by connecting the two buildings with a courtyard and raised bridges. Nowadays, The Forks Market is spread over two floors and has vendors selling everything from fresh fruit, bread, meat, and wine to cigars and aromatherapy products, to crafts and artworks from 300 local and Canadian artisans!

Located just outside The Forks Market is a plaza which features fountains and several open performance spaces and patios. In the winter, the Plaza becomes an artificially-cooled skating rink, where you can take a romantic skate with your sweetie under a canopy decorated with lights.

There are so many more fun facts about Winnipeg! Here are just a few:
  • Winnipeg was home to the world's first professional hockey team, which was organized in 1879 and was a member of the professional International Hockey League for 20 years from 1905 until 1924. Now they have the Winnipeg Jets!
  • Although Winnipeg is the second sunniest city in Canada, it is known for its bone-chillingly cold winters, where wind chill values are a common occurrence in the local climate. The wind chill has gone down as low as -57.1°C (-70.8°F) and on average there are twelve days of the year that can reach a wind chill below -40°C (-40°F).
  • Winnie-the-Pooh was a fictional creation of A.A. Milne, based on a real bear named Winnipeg, after the city.
  • Winnipeg is the home of the Royal Canadian mint - which also makes coins for many other countries around the world!

See you at The Forks! We'll grab some picnic food at the Market and head outside to eat lunch and enjoy knitting in the park using our May colourway!” – quoted from Ancient Arts
