NEW LUXURY YARNS

Monday, December 27, 2021 – New Luxury Yarns

So, here’s the riddle of the day,
“What does a camel...

and a Mongolian goat...

have in common?”
[besides the fact that they are both animals ;) ]

Any guesses???

Well, if you guessed ‘hair’, then you got it right!

“HAIR”, you ask? Yes, that’s correct. Both camels and goats (mohair & cashmere breeds) shed their hair and that hair is turned into scrumptious, luxurious fibre. And that, friends, leads us into today’s “New Luxury Yarns” email.

We have brand new yarns to introduce to you from a company by the name of Nordic Yarn...“we’re proud of our products. They are a matter of our hearts, Tia and Erik” (co-owners).

Based in HELSINKI, Finland

Here is a little bit about the company and their mission statement:

“When we started, we were the only company in the world making yarn of 50% virgin cashmere and 50% second hand cashmere yarn.”

‘We wanted to sell high-quality yarn, which must also include sustainable values. We…decided to focus on cashmere especially for ecological reasons. They also take into account both quality and sustainable development’, and now also offer 100% baby camel yarn too.

‘Half of the raw material is cashmere goat’s virgin wool from Mongolia. Nordic Yarn buys wool from nomadic tribes whose goats are not intensively produced, says Erik. - We know where the wool comes from so accurately that we could nearly point out the exact goat. Our criteria is very precise.’

‘The yarn’s recycled raw material is from second hand clothing. Some of it comes from surplus material from the large fashion houses like Versace, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy or Arman. We do not break the fiber and repaint the material. Our color technicians manufacture the yarn color according to the original material. Only the new virgin wool will be dyed with eco-friendly colors. They are always sought in exactly the same shade.’

‘So if you knit from Nordic Yarn’s yarn, you will also knit in high fashion. And compared to a brand new yarn, we use 73% less water and about 50% less electricity. We also do not use harsh chemicals. So our carbon footprint is much smaller’. So it’s a win-win-win scenario!

If you want to read more about the company, its beginnings and current direction, see their “About Us” page.

And now onto the really exciting news…We have Nordic yarns in stock!!

Meet Bernice, a Mongolian cashmere goat.

Eco Cashmere
Nordic Yarn Eco Cashmere is the ultimate soft and sustainable yarn!

Our Eco Cashmere is a sustainable luxurious mix of virgin and recycled cashmere. Inspired by the ever-changing nature of the North, this yarn is a combination of incredible softness, natural colours, and artisan craftsmanship.

Fibre Content: 100% Cashmere

Eco Cashmere is available in two weights:

This yarn is made out of 100% Italian Cashmere, a blend of virgin cashmere and recycled cashmere, and is incredibly light-weight. This 100% cashmere, luxury yarn is an Earth-friendly mix of recycled and Mongolian pure virgin cashmere.

The recycled content helps make this cashmere less pill-prone than others so your garments and accessories still look great after a winter of wear.

Nordic Yarn Eco Cashmere: Not only is it probably the best yarn you’ll ever work with, but it is also a carbon balanced and climate-smart yarn.

With our Eco Cashmere we are able to achieve a total reduction of 74% in water, 66% in energy use and 78% in carbon dioxide; 5 times lower environmental impact than a similar normal yarn.

Look good in it, feel good about it - indulge in something lasting and lovely! Nordic Eco Cashmere is so snuggly and soft you'll have a hard time putting it down once you start knitting or crocheting with it. Garments and accessories alike will have a lush softness.

This yarn is lightweight (much lighter to wear than wool), luscious, lofty and soft, making it the perfect yarn to keep you warm but without bulk or weight. Nordic yarn is a truly eco-friendly, luxury yarn that you'll want to wrap yourself in from head to toe! Use Eco-Cashmere to make hats, scarves, and shawls that you'll cherish for years to come.

Not all cashmere is created equal
“Cashmere. Just the word conjures images of sophistication. Like caviar and pearls, the fiber has humble beginnings. Who would think that the hair on the underbelly of the Mongolian goat would be in such high demand? But it has been for centuries, and because there is relatively little of it and because processing costs are high, it has traditionally been an indulgence.

In particular, Scotland and Italy are traditional centers of excellence when it comes to spinning and knitting cashmere.

…the very things that make cashmere so sought after: softness, (light)weight and its insulating properties. Cashmere is eight times warmer than sheep's wool, yet significantly lighter…take every opportunity to wear it. Just as a Persian rug improves with age, cashmere's soft feel improves with wear.”
quoted from Sabrina Azadi & Tribune Newspapers

Another new, luxurious yarn…

BABY CAMEL from Nordic Yarn
Camel hair fibre is not half as well known as it ought to be! We thought we’d give those of you who haven’t knitted with it before some fun facts on this ethically-sourced exotic fibre. Nordic’s fingering weight (#1) Baby Camel yarn is definitely worth trying!

“Camel wool has been used for so long that it is even mentioned in the Bible. This beautiful fibre has been used in the West since at least the 17th century, and camel yarn suddenly burst into popularity in the late 19th century in England. High-grade camel wool is nearly as soft as cashmere, and it is, in fact, often blended with cashmere wool to make luxury garments.”
quoted from Nordic Yarn

What does it feel like?
Camel wool fibre is finer than most merino (sheep wool), making it often feel just as soft as cashmere.

What are the benefits of using Camel yarn?
A camel’s hair is thermo-regulated to keep them warm in the cold and cool in hot temperatures – this translates into a wonderfully breathable fabric.

What can you make with it?
Garments and accessories knitted up with camel yarn are lightweight yet warm (and breathable) which makes it perfect for wearing year ‘round. Nordic Baby Camel yarn is even soft and comfy enough for baby clothes!
