Well, here we are nearing the end of October…can you believe it?!? How is it that the days seem long and yet the months fly by??
But the good news about heading into November, besides the beauty of the fall foliage, is that it is ‘full on yarn season’! And that, of course, brings with it brand new yarns, along with new projects, and today is no exception.
Today we would like to introduce you to LASCAUX DK. Never heard of it? That’s ok. It is a new yarn to us too. Lascaux DK is the newest addition the Ancient Arts Lascaux Line. Ancient Arts is a trusted, reliable source for excellent quality yarns. They have had such success with their Lascaux Fine and Lascaux Worsted yarns, that they have thoughtfully introduced it in a Double Knitting (DK) weight, along with pattern support and a very special opportunity for us to order pre-selected Lascaux DK Kits from their 5 Lascaux DK projects – a hat, a stole, a shawl and two pullovers in many colourful kit options.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION
“This year in 2021, we rounded out our very special Lascaux yarn line with a DK weight yarn, and are celebrating its creation with a pattern collection of five pieces that are sure to delight! Like the other yarns in the Lascaux line, Lascaux DK incorporates the natural colour, loft and cushiness of Manx Loaghtan Wool, a rare iron-age sheep breed from the Isle of Man, together with the drape, lustre, and silkiness of Punta Arenas Wool, a modern Corridale sheep from Chile. Lascaux DK has a story to tell; bringing together Old World and New World fibres, and connecting us to each other and to our history as crafters as it does so. This DK weight yarn has been designed to have just the right twist to give great stitch definition for cables and texture while retaining enough rustic character to allow for easy slip stitch and other colourwork techniques. This custom design makes Lascaux DK the ideal all-purpose yarn, and this collection shows off its’ versatility beautifully while allowing you to tell your own story as you work through these patterns.
To create the collection we invited a group of talented designers with backgrounds from around the world to swatch with the new yarn and to design something that would showcase their talents and the yarn at the same time. We think they’ve done a brilliant job and they have created five classic designs that will stand the test of time and provide enjoyment for many years to come. In a year that has continued to bring us challenges, we have cherished the willingness of staff and designers to rally together and make a great project happen. Hand-dyed Lascaux DK is a perfect combination of Old and New Worlds in this mix of Manx Loaghtan Wool (old breed sheep) and Punta Arenas (modern breed); a perfect DK weight yarn that keeps you warm and cozy, while still feeling great against your skin.

The Roman Villa shawl takes you on an archaeological expedition, touring an ancient Roman Villa; bring your knitting needles instead of your trowel to excavate the stunning details drawn from history! Roman villas embodied the ideal of living and were often built as multi-storey buildings with under-floor heating that many would still envy today. Decoration could be elaborate, with villas being completed with stunning mosaic floors, and walls decorated with beautiful frescos depicting landscapes, gardens, heroes, people, animals, household scenes and more. This shawl echoes the layout of a typical Roman villa layout, incorporating colours, textures, and stitch patterns that draw on this rich legacy to create your own interpretation of wearable luxury.

This knitted hat pattern incorporates a Japanese kanji character, Matsu, for the word “Pine,” which is the inspiration and theme for this hat! Pine trees are adored in Japan, and are the traditional subject of many beautiful artworks. The motifs representing this iconic tree flow around the hat just like the Byobo (Japanese multi-panel folding screens), presenting a series of stylized images showing different shapes and aspects of pine trees.

The Pachira Pullover, named for a tropical tree often sold with a braided trunk, is a traditional favourite that gets an update with travelling braided cables and contrasting colour trim. This mock turtleneck raglan is packed full of clever details. The movement of the cables provides the flattering illusion of waist shaping while retaining a relaxed comfortable fit. The sleeves are worked in the round to the underarms, and then put on hold. The front and back hems for the split hem are worked separately, and then joined to work the body in the round. The Raglan shaping, worked together with the body and sleeves is accented with the cables, and the contrasting coloured folded hems on the collar and cuffs peek through for a highlight that can be made subtle or daring with your choice of colours!
