ONE OR TWO SKEIN SHAWLS & COWLS

Monday, August 30, 2021 – One or Two skein Shawls & Cowls

PLEASE NOTE: If you cannot see the pictures in today’s email, CLICK HERE to view the PDF file.

A VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

Greetings one and all! I hope you are all surviving this crazy summer heat wave that has attacked Southern Ontario over the last week or so. Myself, I’m feeling a little “wilted” and “melted” and I am SO looking forward to some cooler weather (especially in the evening) to hopefully come our way soon. Please stay cool and hydrated.

Speaking of summer, the word “vacation” is usually synonymous with the summer season, and with that in mind, I have a very important announcement. As mentioned in previous emails and on our website home page, at the end of September, London Yarns celebrates its’ 30th Anniversary. We have loads of fun events, promotions, give-aways and exclusive kits and offers planned for you this Fall season and continuing right into the holiday season.

   ……. BUT FIRST……. a VACATION!

Yes, that’s right, for the first time in 30 years I am going to close the store for one week so that ALL OF US here can enjoy some well-deserved time off!

We will be OPEN this week from…
Tuesday, August 31st
through to
Saturday, September 4th
each day from 11 am to 4pm

(then closed for the Sunday/Monday)

We will also be OPEN again on
Tuesday, September 7th, 2021
from 11 – 4 pm

THE STORE WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH UNTIL WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2021.

WE WILL RE-OPEN WITH “BELLS ON” ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16
TH, 2021 FROM 11 AM TO 4 PM.

I have to commend everyone who has worked here tirelessly throughout the pandemic. So many of us had to completely cancel travel plans and/or cut short holidays that were pre-planned. It was so disappointing not to be able to do the things that we were so looking forward to. We were not able to see friends and family because of border closures and a myriad of restrictions. We appreciate that all of you know and have experienced these things as well. Even everyday life has been challenging for the past 18 months. Now it is long overdue for everyone here to enjoy some time off.

Just to reiterate, here is a calendar of our vacation store hours…

Last week, I mentioned that Jen is heading to Halifax, Nova Scotia to start her new position as Assistant Professor of Biology at the University.  She is on day 2 of her journey as we send this week’s email out and we all wish her the safest of travels as she motors her way halfway across the country.

Please keep an eye on our upcoming emails. As well as the 30th Anniversary celebrations getting underway, I have many more exciting announcements to share with you as the store keeps motoring along.
-  Janet

Well, here we are at the end of August!! Did the summer ‘fly by in the blink of an eye’ for you too?!?!? In the spirit of hanging onto the tail end of summer and hopefully enjoying a long & beautiful Fall, today we are featuring Ancient Arts yarns, including new colourways and some lightweight shawl & cowl projects that we can still wear well into the Fall season.

NEW from Ancient Arts Yarns…

Introducing The Classic Denim Collection!

“Classic Denim is a gradient set (dyed on the Socknado base) that I developed to match those deep dark jeans we see at times in the store and just cannot resist. This is a colour we often see in the very oldest pairs of jeans. I first owned jeans this colour as a teenager and I loved them! It is a rich steely blue, fading as the material ages to a steel grey with that lovely undertone of blue. It has depth and intensity and an element of timelessness about it.” – quoted from Caroline

Five fantastic shades of hand-dyed Classic Denim colours, graduating from light to dark and so beautifully done! These colourways are also repeatable, unlike the special ‘colour of the month’ series.

Introducing The Meow & Woof Collections!

“The Meow and Woof charity collections are…two lines of hand-dyed colourways we dye that are based on specific breeds of cats and dogs. A portion of the proceeds from each skein of these yarns is donated to animal rescue and welfare charities in both Canada and the US. We like to keep these collections fresh, and to give representation to as many cats and dogs and their owners as we can.” – quoted from Caroline

MEOW COLLECTION

The Meow colourways shown above
are dyed on the Socknado base.

Tickle My Tummy colourway is a tribute to all those brown tabby cats who have white paws or tummies (or both)! This colourway is a tribute to these cuties that have such distinctive markings. And let’s face it, when they show off those tummies, who can resist them? The models for the colourway this time are the kittens who were endlessly happy to show me their tummies and beg for some loving.

Orange Tiger Tabby colourway is for all those cats (and their devoted owners) who are orange tabby coloured but also have white somewhere on their bodies and/or legs. While we have an orange tabby colourway, it doesn’t include these lovely beauties, and we felt it was time to recognize them. One of the models for this colourway is Douglas Fur (aka, Loves to Purr), a giant of an orange tiger tabby who was rescued in Calgary and stayed with me after I fostered and rehabilitated him.

WOOF COLLECTION
The 'Woof Collection' from Ancient Arts Yarns is a special set of hand-dyed yarns with colours that take inspiration from the coats of different dog breeds. The colourful yarn collection includes styles named and dyed after the looks of beloved dogs like German Shepherds, St. Bernards and Basset Hounds. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the Woof Collection is put towards animal rescue and welfare charities that help care for stray or abandoned animals.

 The Woof colourways shown above
are dyed on the Socknado base.
Be sure to check out even more in-stock colours from Ancient Arts! Click on the title links to view our web pages, in-stock colours and quantities available.

Now, what can we do with just one or two skeins of that very special yarn & colourway that we have our eye on???

Here are some Shawl & Cowl ideas that need only one or two skeins to make!

Inspired by subterranean waterways, “Artesian” is a triangular shawl with asymmetrical sections of lace spilling over the shawl’s edge. Short rows are used to create each section. Work as many or as few sections as you wish, or that your yarn allows.

Artesian has been reworked to include 5-7 repeats of the lace panel motif. Note that proportions of the shawl will change slightly with each repeat of the motif. 5 repeats will yield more length along the cast on-edge than along the scalloped edge; 6 repeats will yield approximately even cast-on edge and scalloped edge length; 7 repeats will yield less length along the cast-on edge in comparison to the scalloped edge.

Sizes: 1, 2, 3 (adjustable)

Piewhacket is a one-skein, reversible, garter stitch shawl constructed from three sequential short row triangles which build on each other, with a final uneven edging knit from live stitches using additional short rows.

The resulting asymmetrical shape drapes perfectly around the neck and shoulders, and is completely reversible for ultimate wearability. The short row shaping means never having to work a huge number of stitches, and also shows off the unique beauty of variegated or semi-solid yarns – like those from Ancient Arts!

Yardage: 343 mtrs Fingering weight yarn (#1)

Finished Measurements: 52” wingspan x 8” deep (12” deep at points)

Pattern: We can purchase the pattern on your behalf for approx. $9.30 CDN and have it emailed directly to you.

Gauge: 18 stitches and 40 rows = 4” in garter stitch

Needles: 4.00 mm x 100 cm circular or size needed to obtain gauge

A new take on the ruffle shawl, Rufflebye is a reversible shawl that is worked sideways in three garter stitch wedges which cleverly intersect to change the direction of the knitting. Increases and decreases create the shape from tip to tip, while two sets of short rows throughout form the crescent shape and the gently ruffled edging.

Sizes: one size; customizable

Yardage: 343 mtrs Fingering weight yarn (#1)

Finished Measurements:
  • 10” deep at center x 45” from tip to tip, if pulled straight.
  • Rufflebye forms a natural semi-circle and measures 40” along inner semi-circumference, and 72” along outer semi-circumference, measured without stretching.
  • The 12-stitch ruffle along the outer edge is approximately 2.6” and begins as soon as there are enough stitches.

Pattern: We can purchase the pattern on your behalf for approx. $9.30 CDN and have it emailed directly to you.

Gauge: 22 stitches and 34 rows = 4” in garter stitch

Needles: 4.00 mm x 100 cm or size needed to obtain gauge

Exploring nontraditional shaping with short rows, Triangulate is a one-skein, reversible, garter stitch shawl composed of triangles with a chevron border. It is designed to show off the colours of a hand dyed or variegated skein, using simple stitches and beautiful yarn. The central triangle begins with a provisional cast on at the center, and is knit outwards in two halves using short rows. The wide edging is knit continuously from the live stitches with no picking up necessary, and may be made narrower or wider to accommodate varying yardages. The unusual construction results in a deceptively simple shape that is easy and yet interesting to knit, not to mention versatile to wear.

Sizes: one size, with instructions for adapting to varying yardage

Yardage: 366 - 402 mtrs Fingering weight yarn (#1)

Finished Measurements: approx. 58” wingspan x 19” deep

The diagonal lines of this tubular cowl bring to mind Portland’s driving rain. Rise above the clouds with this simple to knit and easy to wear cowl offered in two lengths and in your choice of two weights of yarn.

Construction:
This cowl is worked in the round to create a long tube of knitted fabric. The ends of the tube are ultimately sewn together to create the circle you actually put your head through. This means it is completely reversible and there is no wrong side.

Lace weight yarn (#0): 300 (700) mtrs OR
Fingering weight yarn (#1): 350 (880) mtrs
