PATTERNS & PATTERN BOOKS…

Jen’s been very busy updating and adding patterns to our
Patterns webpage. If you haven’t visited our Pattern webpages in a while, feel free to take a browse through; you never know…there may be something there that ‘strikes your fancy’.

This week’s yarn feature is BAMBOO POP.

BAMBOO POP
Universal Yarns Bamboo Pop DK is a silky, light and breezy, machine washable blend of 50/50 cotton and bamboo. The fibre blend gives the yarn beautiful sheen and highlights as each of the fibres absorb the dye differently. (This yarn is vegan-friendly and great for those that cannot tolerate animal fibres against their skin). Perfect for baby, children and adult projects alike.

Bamboo Pop is available in Solid shades, ‘Dots’ shades and ‘Multi’ shades.

Before we get into the Projects section of today’s email, did you happen to notice the shape of the Bamboo Pop ball? It is a bit unusual in that it is an oblong ball. There is no need to rewind the ball; you can work from it as is, but the base of the ball has less surface area to keep it sitting in place on its own while pulling from either the outside or inside of the ball. So, you may find it helpful to use a yarn spindle or yarn bowl. And as chance would have it, we have a few styles to offer you!

NOTE: If you like a featured project in today’s email, but would prefer to use a different yarn, feel free to substitute Ultra Pima Cotton, Radiant Cotton, Marmel, Versailles, or Remix Light – all of which are in-stock yarns.

Or if you prefer to substitute a Berroco yarn, we can place a DropShip order for any of these DK (#3) weight, summer yarns:
  • Chai: 56% Linen, 44% Silk; 130m/50g; $18.98
  • Mantra: 100% Silk; 167m/50g; $14.98
  • Mantra Stonewash: 100% Silk; 167m/50g; $16.98

  • Zinnia: 93% Cotton, 7% Nylon; 114m/50g; $16.98

And so, without further ado, here are five favourite projects to use with Bamboo Pop or any DK weight (#3) yarn…

Bamboo Pop Projects – The ‘Big Five’!

Five Favorites in Bamboo Pop
“…this week we’re putting the spotlight on one of our most beloved yarns, Bamboo Pop! Knitters, Crocheters, and Weavers alike love working with this yarn and it’s easy to see why. Bamboo Pop is a beautifully balanced blend of 50% bamboo and 50% cotton with a broad palette of solids, multi’s, and speckles. The yarn itself features the subtlest heather, gentle sheen, and creates fabric that is smooth, soft, and perfectly drapey.

We have an array of patterns available to support this yarn: accessories, garments, and more! With so many options available, sometimes it can be hard to pick the perfect pattern for your next project. So, today we thought we’d kindle some inspiration by sharing our five best-selling patterns in Bamboo Pop over the last year. Let’s get started!” – quoted from the Universal Yarn Blog, written by Rachel Brockman

#5 Areca Mosaic Top
by Yonca Ozbelli
Photos © Yonca Ozbelli

“Coming in at #5 on our list is Areca, designed by our amazing managing director, Yonca Ozbelli. Yonca has a knack for creating designs with simple silhouettes that really stand-out and Areca is no exception. I love how this top casually caps the shoulders but isn’t a true cap-sleeve. It’s somewhere between a cap-sleeve tee and a tank, and it’s perfect for warm spring and summer days. The timeless colour combination of black and white makes it so easy to pair this top with anything. Areca features graphic mosaic motifs that are offset by solid side panels. Knit flat from the bottom-up, there is actually no seaming involved! Instead, a three-needle bind-off joins the shoulders and side seams.” –

Finished Bust: 33½ (36¾, 40, 43¼, 46½, 49½, 52¾, 56, 59¼, 62½, 65½)”

Then, stitches are picked up along the left and right sides to create an edging and side panels. The sides are joined using the three-needle bind-off.

#4 Palmetto Wrap
by Aubrey Busek
Photos © Aubrey P Busek

“Looking for an absolute show-stopper? Look no further than Palmetto. I am so glad that Aubrey joined our design team back in 2019. She has such a thirst for learning new things, taking creative risks, making bold design decisions, and letting the “extra” in her shine through. Although by design Palmetto is a rectangular stole, Aubrey opted for a variety of engaging stitch patterns to make this eye-catching accessory. You’ll be a mosaic knitting expert by the time you finish. While the mosaic portions decorating each end demand a bit of your attention, you’ll be rewarded with rest during the garter stripes and slipped-stitch sections in the center of the wrap. Finish this piece with fun tassels on each corner, wrap it around your shoulders, and show it off to all your friends!

By the way, both Areca and Palmetto are part of the Modern Mosaic e-Book. This collection as a whole tied with Palmetto for #4 on the list. The e-book compiles four delightful designs featuring mosaic knitting. Don’t miss the other amazing designs in this collection! Buy just one pattern, or get Areca (shown above), Dypsis, Palmetto, and Sabal together when you purchase the e-book!”–

#3 Staggered Shawl
by Amy Gunderson

Photos © Universal Yarn

“Next up is the Staggered Shawl. Playing with colour is just so fun with Bamboo Pop. The palette is broad and the variegated colourways were designed to pair perfectly with the solids. Designer Amy Gunderson loves adventurous designs and she knows how to transform simple knits and purls into something truly special. In this case, she used intarsia to create an exhilarating effect in this otherwise simple triangular shawl. It’s primarily garter stitch, so this accessory will fly off your needles, too.”–

“At #2 on our list, we have yet another genius design by Amy Gunderson. I remember when we first received this sweater from our sample knitter. I fell in love immediately and was so thrilled to see the Bamboo Pop multi’s used in such a clever way (plus, it reminds me of Fruit Stripes gum). The multi creates short blips of colour breaking up the thick graphite stripes and each edge is trimmed with a tidy, stripey I-cord. Nope – you don’t need to change colours mid-row for this effect – the multi’s do all the work! I love the oversized and boxy shape of the body with fitted, 3/4 length sleeves. The silhouette perfectly illustrates the drape of Bamboo Pop. It’s breezy, lightweight, and perfect for springtime. The “No. 1 Pullover” has been a hit at shows and we’ve seen many interpretations of the design. No matter what colour combination you choose, it’s sure to yield exciting results!”–
quoted from the Universal Yarn Blog, written by Rachel Brockman

Featuring lovely drape, a flattering shape, and soothing stitch patterns, this sweater will have you completely smitten. This pullover pairs a solid colour of Bamboo Pop with stripes of vibrant, self-shading Bamboo Pop multi for an electrifying effect. The colour changes are especially striking along the edges, which are neatly trimmed with an I-cord bind-off. Worked flat in pieces, the seams provide structure to this garment and ensure its durability for years to come.

Finished Bust: 59¾ (63¾, 67½, 71¼, 75, 78¾, 82¾, 86½)”
Length: 20½ (20¾, 21, 21¼, 21½, 21¾, 22, 22¼)”
Sleeve: 9 (9½, 10, 10½, 11, 11½, 12, 12½)”
Shown in size 63¾” modeled with 31¾” of positive ease.

Sizing Note: This sweater is intended to fit with a generous amount of positive ease. To determine the best size to make, measure your arm just below the elbow. Choose a size with a Sleeve measurement that is the closest to this, keeping in mind that the Sleeve is ribbed and is still very stretchy.

#1 Kukui Shawl
by Tori Gurbisz
Photos © Universal Yarn

“Finally, at #1, our best-selling Bamboo Pop design is Kukui, designed by Tori Gurbisz! I’m pretty sure I’ve seen someone wearing a wonderful iteration of the Kukui shawl at every Stitches show I’ve attended, and I swear I’m not exaggerating. It’s a clear favorite among all of our customers and it’s easy to see why. The slipped stitches are striking next to the blocks of solid colour. It’s a boomerang-shaped shawl, meaning that it’s knit on the bias. Personally, this is my favorite shawl shape because they’re fun to knit, easy to style, and they have a more modern appeal than traditional triangular shawls (don’t get me wrong, I also really love classic triangular shawls!).

There you have it – our five best-selling patterns in our best-selling yarn, Bamboo Pop!”–

RIGHT TURN SHAWL
by Amy Gunderson

 Photos © Amy Gunderson

FUN WITH DOTS: Spot-prints, aka “dots” are not just for young ones!! The Right Turn Shawl shows off just how sophisticated Bamboo Pop Dots can look. So, those of us ‘young at heart’ can definitely enjoy a good spot-print too!

This shawl is knit flat in one piece from the top down. With slip stitches, stripes, and solid sections of colour, the Right Turn Shawl will keep you interested, but it is also a ‘beginner friendly’ project too.

This shawl begins with garter stitch, and then moves on to slip-stitches that easily create the two-colour striped sections. And, back to garter stitch that is then completed with an I-cord cast-off.

This shawl would be fantastic in so many colour combinations. I wonder…which colours will you choose?

Note: In the striped sections, the colour changes are achieved with slipped stitches, meaning only one colour per row is used.

Finished Measurements: 52” wingspan x 26” deep at centre point

SORBET SHAWL
by Rachel Brockman

Photos © Rachel Brockman

Triangle shawls are a knitting classic. When I first learned how to work one, I was so excited to watch the magic happen as you increase over and over again. Even better when they have easy to follow lace patterns and make the most of a small amount of yarn. The Sorbet Shawl is a free pattern using Bamboo Pop. Designed by Rachel Brockman @rachbrocknits , this shawl features eyelets, lace, and a classic blue and orange colour combination. Bamboo Pop is 50/50 cotton and bamboo blend, so it is soft, and has excellent drape. Easy to work with, even if you may not be a lace knitting expert, you'll get the hang of this pattern in no time.” –
quoted from @universal_yarn IG post

Perfect for warm weather, the Sorbet shawl is an airy, oversized triangle that’s excellent for curing an ice-cream headache. The colours used in this shawl were inspired by blueberry sorbet and orange sherbet – the perfect summer treats! But feel free to personalize your own Sorbet Shawl to suit your wardrobe and choose colours that make YOU happy!

Finished Measurements: 72” wingspan x 36” deep

Total Yardage: 798 m (876 yds) DK weight yarn (#3)

YARN: BAMBOO POP
2 balls for Main Colour (MC) [532m/584yds]; shown in 131 Denim
1 ball for Contrast Colour (CC) [266m/292yds]; shown in 135 Apricot Slush

Note: This pattern is written to make the most of three balls of yarn. Measure your gauge after blocking to ensure accuracy and to prevent running out of yarn.

Pattern: available as a FREE DOWNLOAD

Gauges:
20 sts x 40 rows = 4” in garter
20 sts x 24 rows = 4” in Zig Zag Lace

Needle: 4.00 mm x 100 cm (US 6 x 40”) circular, or size needed to obtain gauge

Pattern Notes: This triangular, striped shawl is knit flat beginning with a garter tab cast-on. Stripes and eyelet rows make up most of the pattern with a bold stripe of Zig-Zag lace and a few rows of garter to finish it off. This pattern calls for the suspended bind-off method. If in doubt, we recommend bumping up a needle size when binding off to ensure a stretchy edge.

Well, we hope that our Bamboo POP feature has added a little HOP to your step and encouraged you to give it a try by casting on a fun new project.

Until we speak again, have a good rest of your week.
Patti-Ann
