All About Shawls
As we transition from the cold winter months into Spring, the temperatures can vary substantially from hour to hour. So what better way to take the chill off than to throw a comfortable wrap or shawl around our shoulders? Easy to put on, easy to take off, as the need may be.

So today, along with Berroco’s DropShip Offer, we are featuring a few Shawl patterns (as well as a cowl & a poncho, for good measure) in a range of thickness from lace to fingering to DK to worsted. It’s your choice and your preferences - pick & choose, or mix & match, or make one of each!

To keep things organized, we will start with the lightest weight projects, through to the heaviest, that being in a worsted weight. All of which are both practical and functional, not to mention fashionable!

And, just for fun…there is a ‘giggly project’ at the very end for all you Crocheters out there!

Only Good Vibes is a reminder to enjoy the good things that surround you — there are so many of them out there!

This lovely shawl is a fun collaboration, combining a fingering weight yarn and a lace weight mohair to make a soft and dreamy fabric in a gorgeously romantic colourway.

The design pairs garter stitch with lace sections, with highlights of a subtle chevron design alternating stitch patterns and colour.

‘This pattern is an exploration of technique and texture with a subtle play on colour. Nothing too difficult - don’t worry; but also not too easy, just somewhere right in the middle. The shawl starts out very simple and gradually becomes more interesting as the knitting progresses.

For the most part, you are holding the DK weight with the lace mohair to add a bit of body to your stitches as well as a delicate halo. There are some portions where you are working the mohair single-stranded (on its own), and others where the mohair is doubled (onto itself). This allows for not only a play in fabric density but texture as well. The finished piece is quite large, yet light, and honestly one of the coziest things I have truly ever knit.’ – Grace Akhrem

Kyler is worked starting from the narrow point of the left edge. Stitches are increased every right side row in the lace pattern and then onward into the Stockinette stitch section. At the end of the shawl there is a rib border which is punctuated by some last rows of the lace pattern. The combination of lace, stockinette and ribbing give this shawl a sophisticated yet casual look. Lace pattern is both written and charted.

The Ravie poncho is a great piece of clothing to own. Because it is pleasantly wide, it flatters every body shape and yet keeps you nicely warm - almost as if you were wrapped in a soft blanket. Plus, no matter what you wear with it, you will always look like you’re ‘well-dressed’ - for example, like here with a shirt and jeans.

Its rectangular shape, worked flat in rows, is then folded and sewn together with an invisible seam, which turns Ravie into a poncho and one of the easiest garments in the world to make and to wear.

Ravie offers an interesting section in a Smock Stitch pattern that forms a lovely textured hem. And the I-cord edge also provides a sophisticated finish. The pattern explains how you can easily adjust the poncho if you want to have a square shape instead of an oblong one.

‘Ravie’ is a French word that means ‘delighted’ – of which you will be with this poncho!

Bringing to mind a marble mantel, a chiseled frieze, or an ornate column, our Bas-Relief Wrap has sculpture in its bones!

Panels of simple moss (i.e. double seed) stitch intersperse amid three kinds of cable panels, including one speckled with beautiful little bobbles. It makes for a very engaging knit and also a project that ends with a real feeling of accomplishment.

Follow along with the wrap pattern to make the version shown here, or choose the narrower scarf option. Either way, we offer written or charted instructions, depending on your brain!

NOTE: Trying to decide Scarf or Wrap? You might like to know a couple of ways in which the patterns differ. First, the Scarf version includes just the stitches to the right of the Wrap’s center cable (not including the center cable). In addition, there are the same number of moss stitches before and after the cable panels (unlike in the Wrap version).

Sizes: Scarf (Wrap)

If you can k2, p2, you can make this cowl!! It’s an ‘easy-peasy’ cowl, knit in the round with a very simple stitch pattern that looks awesome when completed.

The Hill & Dale Cowl begins with double-moss stitch and ends with a simple 2x2 ribbing completing a gorgeous infinity cowl that looks equally striking worn as a single loop or doubled for extra-warmth.

Using a worsted yarn will make this a warm, stylish, high-impact accessory that will complement any wardrobe.

Finished Measurements: 10” tall / 25” wide after blocking (circumference = 50”)

‘During Fall & Winter (works just as well in the Spring too!), I adore wrapping up in my biggest, squishiest shawls. The Honey Moss shawl combines squishy worsted weight wool with big honeycomb cables that transition into a magnified Horseshoe lace. Once finished it begs to be wrapped up in!’ – Andrea Mowry

Photos © Andrea Mowry

This shawl is knit sideways, increasing along one edge to create an asymmetrical shawl. The first half of the shawl is cables, which then give way to lace once we have built up a larger stitch count. Using a worsted weight yarn creates an incredibly squishy and generously sized shawl to wrap up in!

500 g Worsted Weight yarn (approx. 915 mtrs)

And finally, this week’s Berroco DropShip project feature is HASKELL, knit with SESAME…

The beautiful yet subtle diamond colour work is what really makes the Haskell pullover stand out. Using contrasting colours, in what is actually a very simple design, turns curiously dynamic with the colour changes of Sesame to create a beautiful yoke that will get people stopping to ask, “Did you make that?” Why yes you did!!

Look at the fun that Jen’s been having with her crochet skills…

This little doggy makes Jen ‘giggle’ every time she looks at him. Does it make you giggle too? Why not make one for yourself and for anyone you know that could use a smile to brighten their day?
