BLANKET SEASON & MEMBERSHIP REMINDER ON THIS HOLIDAY MONDAY

Monday, October 12/20 – Blanket Season & Membership Reminder on this Holiday Monday

HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY EVERYONE!

I hope that all of you are safe and healthy on this beautiful Thanksgiving Monday! Although the store is closed today, we are sending out our regular weekly email (thanks to Patti-Ann’s tireless efforts) to keep in touch with all of you.

As you will see below, this is the last week of our SSK Membership Promotion where we are offering 14 months for the price of 12! With that in mind, I wanted to let all of you know that here at the store, we are committed to helping you knit or crochet your way through this pandemic. As the second wave of the virus is now upon us, we need to stay strong and diligent to keep everyone safe. Remember, fibre therapy is one of THE best stress relievers around!

Our store will remain open for curbside pick-up unless ordered by the government to stop this service. In the event that the government locks us down again, we will still be able to provide you with our products through local delivery or Canada Post shipments. It is my intention to keep providing you with all of the materials needed to keep you working at your favourite hobbies. Thanks to the hard work of Jen and Judy here at the store, our yarn and notion inventory is live on our website. In-stock quantities, prices, shade cards and detailed descriptions are available for you to view on your computer at londonyarns.com (see more detailed information below). The information is updated after each business day. We are also happy to do “through the door consultation” if you need to see or choose a colour “in the flesh” so to speak.

We are committed to doing everything we can here at London Yarns to serve all of you, our valued customers, in any way that we safely can. As I have been working in the store over the past several weeks, it has been so nice to see and talk with so many of you, even though it is through the door!

Please, everyone, enjoy this beautiful day and once again, Happy Thanksgiving!

Take good care,
Janet

With cooler weather setting in and a chill in the evening air, is there anything better than curling up on the couch with a cozy blanket? Especially if it is hand-made?!? This week’s DropShip offerings are right on point for this time of year...

EXCLUSIVELY AT LONDON YARNS!
We are the ONLY CANADIAN store
participating in Berroco’s DropShip Program!

This week's DropShip kits feature two classic afghans and four machine-washable yarn choices (superwash wool, wool-blend, cotton and cotton-blend), not to mention the splendid selection of COLOURS!! Berroco will include a beautifully printed copy of the pattern with your yarn order this week.

Both of these blanket patterns are the perfect opportunity to make good use of your
Interchangeable Needle Sets, if you have them!! Knit in the round, as the number of stitches continues to increase, you can ideally change the length of the cords gradually (24” to 32” to 40” to 47”) to accommodate the increased stitch count for the most comfortable knitting experience; your needle will never be too crowded or too stretched.

If you do not yet own an Interchangeable Needle Set, this would be the ideal time to invest in one. A-N-D, if you’ve signed up for a Membership, you can use your discount!

If you want to give the interchangeables a try, without investing in an entire set, keep in mind that we also sell the individual needle tips and individual cords, so you can buy them separately.

This throw is knit entirely in the round, all in one piece – NO SEAMING!! Practice a circular cast-on technique with the Blossfeldt Blanket! Knit in a worsted weight yarn, this blanket pattern starts in the center with Emily Ocker's cast-on, then works outwards in a very simple 4-row stitch pattern and then completed with a garter stitch edging that is mitered and squared off to beautifully frame the central textured stitch pattern. (But don’t let Emily Ockers cast on method worry you…if you prefer, you can always use your favourite cast on method and then join it in the round.)

Speaking of Blankets…

Do you remember the Covid-19 Memorial Blanket Project? Did you know that it is still ongoing?

What is it all about?

The Blanket: Made up of almost 9000 individual, standardized hand knit squares, all made with Berroco Vintage yarn. Any colour can be used, but colour #5125 has been chosen to represent Frontline/Essential Workers.

Assembled as one large art installation Blanket. The blanket will travel throughout Canada as a memorial to all of the Canadians who have lost their lives due to Covid-19. We cannot forget these beautiful citizens. So many have gotten lost in isolation, removed from family and loved ones. Their memory should not fade in isolation.

The names of each person will be lovingly stitched to each square.” – taken from Covid-19 Memorial Blanket Square Ravelry page.

Would you like to help? Here is an update & a review of the project…

“We are encouraged to report that we have hit the halfway mark in terms of the squares that are required! We are making progress every day, and my heart is full, knowing that this is entirely possible to achieve. Your determination, your love, and heart are making this possible, and it’s overwhelmed me with the humanity you have all shown. With much love and gratitude Heather, Amanda, and Ally” - quoted from their Facebook posting

Here is an important reminder of what this project is all about…

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Knitters and crafters, by tradition, often take to their craft in a way to help others. To bring comfort to those who may need it. To soothe themselves when the world gets overwhelming and scary. Heather, Ally, and Amanda are knitters. Each working in a local yarn shop, decided to do just that.
The project begins with a large art installation blanket. One 12-inch square for each soul lost due to Covid-19 in Canada. The blanket, to date will be almost 9000 square feet, and weigh approximately 1500 pounds.

We are calling all knitters across the country to pick up their needles. Together we can create a memorial that can travel through the country, and bring comfort to those who’ve lost loved ones, and to honour the memories of the souls who are now no longer with us.

The names of those we’ve lost will be attached to each square, with the family’s consent, and also published in a memorial book that will travel with the blanket.

Our goal is to be able to display the blanket for the first time in January 2021, the first anniversary of the first presumptive case in Canada. We need to work quickly. We hope you will consider joining us.

The Blanket Pattern Details
Thank you for helping us create this memorial blanket. The loss of so many lives makes us all feel helpless, and it seems unimaginable that these beautiful souls have been lost. We hope this blanket can provide some comfort to the families and loved ones, to know someone took the time to create a square in their memory.

This is a simple square, perfect for beginners. It also allows us to ensure that the name placards can be attached to each square.
  MATERIALS:
1 Skein* of Berroco Vintage (Worsted Weight) – Any colour can be used for this project; there are more than 80 to choose from. The colour Aquae 5125 has been dedicated to represent Frontline/Essential Workers.
4.5 mm needles or size needed to get gauge (can be knit on straights or circulars).

*NOTE: 1 skein of Vintage will make approx.1½ squares; thus with TWO skeins of Vintage, you should be able to make 3 squares. Alternatively, you can use your leftover to makes squares for the Individualized Blankets Project [see details below].

GAUGE: 20 stitches x 27 rows = 4 inches

Finished Measurement of each square: 12 x 12 inches

PATTERN:
(This is the square to be used in the ‘9000 SQUARE BLANKET’)

Cast on 60 stitches.

Knit 6 rows.

Row 1 (Right Side): Knit all stitches
Row 2 (Wrong Side): Knit 5 stitches, purl to the last 5 stitches, knit 5 stitches.

Repeat these 2 rows until the square measures 11½ inches.

Knit 6 rows.

Bind off. Weave in ends (no need to leave any ends for seaming).

This pattern can be downloaded from the Covid-19 Memorial Blanket Square Ravelry page.

Alternatively, a second style of Blanket is also being constructed…

BLANKET SQUARES FOR INDIVIDUAL SIZED BLANKETS:
As part of this project, we will be making individual sized blankets for a variety of agencies throughout Canada. These squares can be
knit or crocheted, and can use any washable worsted weight yarn. These are perfect for those who would prefer to use up some stash yarn.

Finished Measurement of each square: 12 x 12 inches

NEEDLE/HOOK: If knitting, 4.5 mm. If crocheting 5.0mm.

Any combination of stitches, colours, stripes, and patterns can be used for these blankets.

This is perfect for those who have knit a square for the main blanket and have part of a skein left over, add a fun stripe in a stashed worsted weight for a cheery blanket.

There is no need to block or launder your squares; we will do that as part of the assembly process.

ALL Squares can be mailed to:
Covid Blanket Squares
111 Cable Road,
Fenelon Falls,
Ontario, K0M 1N0

Please include the following information with your square:
Name, address, email, and if you wish to include a message of hope, love, or support, please do so.

‘Don’t forget to follow us on Ravelry, Instagram (covid_19_memorial_blanket) and Facebook (Covid-19 Memorial Blanket). Please feel free to share photo’s or stories of why you are knitting or crocheting these squares. We’d love to hear and see.’ – Covid Memorial Blanket Project
