HEARTS FULL OF LOVE

Monday, April 27/20 – Hearts Full of Love

Hi Everyone - Janet here!

I want to wish a “good day” to each and every one of you, our valued customers. I am personally reaching out to all of you today to explain our position regarding the Provincial Mandate that has been issued and extended by our Provincial Government regarding small businesses in Ontario.

It is hard for me to believe that as of last Friday my store has been closed for a full month. I keep thinking I will wake up and it all will have been some sort of bad dream. The “not knowing” what is to happen next is the most unsettling part for me, I believe.

The fact of the matter is, through this State of Emergency we are prohibited by law to open the store or even offer curb side pickup. Hobby and craft stores simply do not qualify. For more information please visit the City of London Newsroom or see the attached article outlining this fact.

I truly appreciate so many of you contacting us in hopes of buying some of our wonderful products but at this time we simply cannot oblige. For that I am very sorry.

I feel very strongly about taking this pandemic seriously. It remains my number one priority to do whatever I can to protect as many people from this virus as possible. By having zero contact through the store I hope to protect not only myself and my family, but also my staff who are also my best friends. Zero contact also helps protect my customers as well as couriers and postal workers who unfortunately have to work through this crisis.

Thank you so much for your support and understanding through this unprecedented time in our history. Thank you as well for your Gift Certificate and Ravelry Pattern purchases to help us along. Every little bit helps.

Please, all of you take care of yourselves and each other.
Janet

Those of us who are not ‘on the front lines’ to be able to help out, may wonder if there is anything that we can actually do to be of assistance or comfort to any who are suffering as a result of this virus. Well, here is our chance to make a bit of difference in the lives of those who are distressed at this time. Sometimes it’s a small gesture that can make a deep impact. Let us share some comfort! Here’s how:

The patients that die in ICU are not allowed their family with them and so they want to put a little heart with their loved one as they sadly pass away and a duplicate heart will be sent out to the families.

Hearts can be knit, crocheted, machine knit or sewn and should be approximately 4.5 cm – 6.5 cm in size so that they can fit in the palm of a hand.

The hearts must be made in pairs of a preferred colour of pink, burgundy or red. All colours are ok as long as they are in matching pairs but pink or red are preferable.

When hearts are completed, place them in a zip lock bag. TAPE the bag shut and write the date and time on the outside of the bag, so they can ‘quarantine’ the hearts, leaving them in isolation for 72 hours before they are safe to use and bring them into the hospital for the patients and families.

“Once the hearts are done and packaged and awaiting either pick up or drop off, please put them somewhere that they can’t be contaminated. Just in case. An example would be the trunk of your car.
Thanks again everyone. It is going to help people big time with their grief.” – Barbie Allen

Heart patterns are available on Ravelry as free downloads:

10 grams (per heart) of DK weight yarn with 3.75mm needles

 No-Sew Heart - Knit
by Mary Anne Walters

Comfort Heart – Machine Knit
by Janet Filipchuk

When your hearts are ready to go, please message Barbie Allen (or any of the others mentioned below) to arrange for pick up or drop off. Barbie works at London Health Sciences Centre and is one of the administrators of the Facebook Group Hearts Full of Love for Patients & Families.

Who do I contact about picking up or dropping off hearts?
You can contact via PM (private message):

FAQ’s:
Who: Anyone who can knit or crochet or sew.
What: Make small stuffed hearts for others who are alone in hospital while in palliative care. A second identical heart is given to the family after they pass away.

Can they be any colour?
  • Yes, as long as they are in matching pairs. Our preference would be red or pink though.

Do I need to wash them first?
  • You can. Ensure the hearts are fully dry before bagging them. Please use clean yarn and put them in a bag.

Can I put several hearts in a larger bag?
  • Yes, you can.

Where will the hearts go?
  • They will be given to patients at LHSC University and LHSC Victoria.

What about nursing homes?
  • We are working on contacts for area nursing homes.

Cottage Life in the North Woods
I was so thrilled and surprised at the number of you who reached out to comment on my little story of how we ended up on Lake Gordon in Quebec and our lifestyle here. As I said, it was really a lot of fun to write and reminisce about the last 40-odd years.

Many of you requested a Part 2 to the story, so I am happy to provide you with that this week. As mentioned in the prior email, a personal story is not for all, so if you would like to read on, please click here for the original history from the email sent 2 weeks ago, and click here if you would like to read Part 2. I hope all of you are healthy and well and remain that way in the weeks to come. - Janet

Keep on keeping well!
Janet & Patti-Ann
