CHECKING IN

Monday, March 30/20 – Checking In

Hello and how are you doing on this Monday afternoon? Well, this is now the 6th day since the ‘Stay Home’ order took effect and non-essential business had to close their doors for the time being. How are you coping? Have you been able to enjoy some of the sunny days that we’ve had? Thankfully, Spring is starting to ‘spring’. The crocuses are up, the robins are about, and we’ve had a couple warmer days…unlike Janet who is enjoying this weather:

So, now that we are cautioned to ‘stay home’ if at all possible, what are we as Knitters, Crocheters and Makers to do?? Some of our staff will be using this time to design, to format new patterns to release in-store and online, to knit, to catch up on WIP’s (works in progress) and ‘UFO’s’ (unfinished objects), as well as expand the London Yarns Pattern Library on Ravelry. It’s a great time to go ‘stash diving’ and cast on a new project, whether large or small.

In our next few emails, we might also share with you some project inspiration of “what’s on our needles”, as Janet did in last week’s email.

Would you like to spread some joy? Perhaps cheer someone up with the hopeful & optimistic prospect of shopping for yarn, projects, gadgets, etc. in the near future when we’ve all come through this? Why not send them a virtual Gift Certificate from London Yarns? Our gift certificates do not expire and can be used to purchase anything in the store. This is a great way to support any small business that is temporarily closed under the current circumstances and it is also a lovely treat to let someone know that you are thinking of them and miss them.

In this time of uncertainty, loss of income and store closures, what can we do to support each other? This website has been established to help us to do just that:

“We have been lucky enough to live and work in this community for almost 20 years. In this time of uncertainty, we want to help however we can.

Earlier this week, we started listing links to the online stores of local businesses who you can get in touch with without having to go to their physical location. As of Friday, we’ve got 150+ businesses listed here. Wow.

Considering the overwhelming response, we’re working behind-the-scenes to make this resource easier to navigate... but in the meantime, we’re still looking to add more business—so keep checking in, and keep sending us more businesses to list!

Stay safe.”

Thank you very much for including London Yarns in your listing!

A Stash Busting Pattern for You

Our friend, Brenda, used to work with us here at London Yarns before retiring and moving out of the London area. While working with us, she taught many sock classes and introduced countless knitters to the joy of sock knitting, our Louise included. She also wrote a book called, “Socks 101”, sharing her mathematical approach to sock knitting and has since collaborated with the ladies at Cabin Fever to expand and publish her book, now entitled “Need a Sock?”.

How we enjoyed our time together before your retirement, Brenda. We miss seeing you with your expressive, cheerful personality and your fearlessness when it comes to our craft! You are a talented and creative knitter.

While she worked at London Yarns, Brenda came up with the “Brenda’s Knittin’ Mitten” pattern to keep her hands warm while she knit (thus the title) and being the thoughtful, generous person that she is, she wrote it down to share with others. And so, today, we are ‘paying it forward’ & passing along her ‘good will’ with you.

Brenda’s Knittin’ Mittens are ideal! Worn as fingerless gloves, the Mittens keep your hands warm while knitting, working at the computer, walking the dog or any other number of activities.

Brenda offers her Knittin’ Mitten pattern in two weights of yarn (and we have added a third); it is a great stash buster pattern!

Knit from the cuff up, the length & size of the Mittens are easily adaptable. And, if you are tidy about weaving in your ends, then these Mitts are reversible!

I have made several pair and use them daily – thanks B.! Even my postman wanted a pair to use on his delivery route.

These mitts are an easy, quick knit and ‘Oh! so useful’. A great way to use up leftover yarns; even if you haven’t enough of one yarn, why not makes ‘crazy stripes’ mitts? These make wonderful, functional gifts and if you feel so inclined, they would be a brilliant item to donate to a charity.

Download your complimentary copy of Brenda’s Knittin’ Mitten Pattern and start your ‘stash busting’ today.

Thank you, Brenda, for creating this pattern and sharing it with one and all. We miss you!

While our doors remain closed at the moment, we hope that this is only temporary. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed as things develop. Be sure to check out our website homepage for the latest news & updates.

Please feel free to reach out to us by any of the following means:

Happy Spring everyone!
