NIGHTSHIFT SHAWL & CLASSES

Monday, March 1/20 – Nightshift Shawl & Classes

Introducing…
NIGHTSHIFT

Perhaps you have seen the Nightshift shawl on Ravelry, perhaps not. Either way, we are very excited to share with you this special opportunity!

We now have Nightshift colour packs available!

But, before we get to the delectable colour choices, first let us explore a few details about the Nightshift Shawl.

“I had so much fun knitting The Shift cowl, that … I knew I had to make a Shift Shawl! This super fun shawl has an even larger canvas for color play! This pattern includes a recipe, to make it all your own, or row by row directions for those who want to play it safe!” - Andrea

Nightshift calls for a Worsted weight yarn in 6 colours with approximately 825 metres (or more) in total.

Once established, the pattern is rhythmically repetitive and satisfying to knit, with the colour changes keeping our interest.

TECHNIQUES TO INDULGE IN:
  • Sideways shawl construction
  • Knitting
  • Purling
  • Mosaic knitting
  • I-cord edging
  • I-cord cast off
  • Increasing
  • Decreasing
  • Slipping Stitches on both RS & WS rows
  • Changing colours

We would be happy to purchase a copy of the Nightshift pattern for you through our Ravelry ‘buy in-store’ program and have it emailed to you.

COLOUR PACK KITS…

The Nightshift shawl uses SIX colours; while some may welcome the opportunity of selecting their own colours, others may find it a challenge, not only to select 6 different colours, but also to envision how the colours will play out and what the finished fabric will look like. If you can relate to the latter, then have no fear!

Cascade has taken that uncomfortable element out of the equation and done the ‘hard part’ for us! They have put together 5 thoughtfully chosen colour packs for those of us who want to knit the Nightshift shawl with the added reassurance that the colours will look spectacular together, as demonstrated in these photos:

We will keep each of the 5 colourway kits in stock for you to ‘see in the flesh’.

Hurry in and choose your kit.

If we sell out of an in-stock kit colour (there will always be one on hand to view), we will be taking orders. Our next kit order will be placed on March 16th with an expected delivery date around March 19th. So be sure to come in or call in prior to March 16.

Janet’s “NIGHTSHIFT SHAWL“ class will run shortly thereafter so that you can confidently be on your way with knitting Nightshift.

220 Superwash Wave Kits
Nightshift Shawl kits are a great way to play with the fun colours of Cascade's 220 Superwash Wave; choose from 5 unique colour-kit options

Knit side-to-side, the Nightshift shawl features simple techniques: slipped stitches, mosaic knitting, and an I-cord edging make this an engaging project to knit. Each shawl kit contains 6 skeins of 220 Superwash Wave in 6 different colours carefully selected and put together based on popular projects seen in shops and favourite colour combinations!

Cascade’s 220 Superwash Wave puts a new spin on their classic 220 Superwash with a new colour shift effect. The colour repeats are very long with some high contrast and some tonal colour options. Made from a natural fiber (100% Superwash Wool) that is easy-care, meaning you can machine wash and dry it!

  • OPTION A contains 1 hank each of colours 102, 105, 108, 109, 110, 111.

Date & Time: Saturday, April 4/20 from 10 am – 1 pm
Teacher: Janet

CLICK HERE to view some of our Class Graduates successful hats!

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!

The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.

Janet has recently revised the crown shaping for this hat, as shown in the picture.  The instructions for this alternate crown shaping will be provided in class.  All prior students are welcome to this handout – please ask for it the next time you are in the shop!

(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)

MAGIC LOOP / TWO CIRCULARS FINGERLESS GLOVES

Do You Hate Double Pointed Needles (DPN’s)?

Learn the Magic Loop and 2 Circular Needle Methods!

Do you loathe DPN’s but need to make a small circle?  Join Janet to de-mystify the process of knitting small circles using the Magic Loop or 2 Circular Needles. Both circular knitting methods will be practiced right in class as we knit a fingerless glove together. Once you learn these simple techniques, you can use these methods to knit hats or shape the crown of a hat, knit mitts, fingerless gloves, socks, sleeves, necklines… any and all small circles!

Even knitters who are comfortable on DPN’s would benefit from learning these skills. For instance, small motifs knit from the centre out or the toes of toe-up socks are much easier to knit on circular needles. No more DPN’s twirling around each other getting out of order or even worse, falling out on the floor!  As well, when you are taking your knitting on the road there is no need to worry about losing one of your DPN’s under the car seat or between the boards of a backyard deck!  Sometimes, you may even forget to pack your DPN’s and as your pattern changes, you realize you are without them. If you have your circular needle set with you, you can carry on knitting!
There are many benefits to adding these circular knitting techniques to your knitting portfolio.

NEW!
NIGHTSHIFT SHAWLAnother Installment of “Knit-It with Jan-et”!
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost: $45
Date & Time: Saturday, March 28/20 from 2 pm – 4:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

What a fun way to spend the afternoon!  This workshop has been designed to help you get started knitting your Nightshift Shawl.

Join me, Janet and begin the wonderful process of creating this piece of art. Although the pattern is not difficult, there are some techniques that not all knitters might be familiar with. Students can expect to learn the different methods of slipping stitches (or mosaic knitting) on right and wrong side rows, as well as methods of increasing that will produce the nicest looking fabric. One side edge of this shawl is finished with an I-Cord treatment that is knit on as you go. It creates a beautifully smooth hemmed edge with no sewing and looks great from either side!

The I-Cord technique is a super skill to have in your repertoire, as it cleanly finishes the side edges or selvedges of any knitted fabric. In future, feel free to use it on scarves, shawls, throws, cowls or any straight edge that you would like to be beautifully finished. This workshop will prove to be relaxing and fun. I can’t wait to see all of those beautiful colours flowing through our hands!
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite: Students must purchase the Nightshift Shawl Kit (available in 5 different colourways) from London Yarns ($99.98).  We will also purchase a digital copy and print the pattern on your behalf through Ravelry (approx. $10.00).

Join me, Janet, for this 7-session workshop and take your knitting to the next level! Both beginners and seasoned knitters will benefit from and enjoy this workshop. This throw is comprised of 14 different squares; each one unique and fun to knit. Remember, I always say in knitting, “if you can knit and purl, you can do anything”, and this throw proves my point! Each square is knit separately which makes it light in your hand and lap, but the stitches are kept “live” at both the top and bottom of each square. These live stitches make finishing the throw a breeze as ALL OF YOUR SQUARES WILL BE KNIT TOGETHER including the borders eliminating any and all hand sewing! This method of constructing each square will allow you to arrange, organize and experiment with different placement options as you work through the throw. The many techniques featured in this throw will give each student various new skill sets to add to their knitting repertoire that will definitely be useful in many future projects. Students can expect to learn several new stitches and all of the “helpful hints” or “tricks of the trade” that go along with them. So many times, knitters encounter knitting instructions that assume you know the “unwritten rule” that accompanies the technique at hand. We will solve all of these mysteries together!
