ANOTHER ‘FO’, MKAL & CLASSES

Monday, February 3, 2020 – Another ‘FO’, MKAL & Classes

We have another brand new ‘finished object’ (FO) to share with you today...

Our most recent FO…

We knit our Two-Point Cowl using Katia’s Melody Jacquard Printone yarn, two looks!

The beauty of this yarn for this project is that due the construction of this cowl combined with the way the ‘self-striping print’ plays out, it not only adds interest to the cowl, but creates two different looks on the front and back!

We used two balls of Melody Jacquard Print in colour 250 with 7mm needles to match the chunky weight gauge.  There was enough of the second ball left over that you could easily get two cowls from three balls – knit one for yourself AND a friend!

For the chunky weight version, choose colours & prints from the full Melody line, as well as, Marble Chunky or Caron x Pantone
:
Or, for those of you who prefer a non-patterned yarn, here is what it looks like knit in a solid colour:

For solid colour Cowl, choose from Berroco Vintage Chunky, Patons Alpaca Blend, and my personal picks – Llama II and Amelie would make for one scrumptious Two-Point Cowl!

Here are further details about the Two-Point Cowl:

Snuggle up right quick!
In our quest for a piece that could hug our shoulders, yet slip easily under a jacket, we designed the Two-Point Cowl – a scaled-down version of our ever-popular Easy Folded Poncho

The Two-Point Cowl is totally seamless and with a simple shape that slips easily over the shoulders.  The uncomplicated, yet fascinating construction keeps it interesting and creates a shape that makes the finished garment so versatile. And the 2-stitch I-cord side edges and bind-off give it a beautiful, minimalist finish.

This project is so simple and so enjoyable; you’ll want one in every yarn you can get your hands on!

Yarn Requirements:
Sport-weight version: Approx. 685 yds/626m sport-weight yarn.
Chunky-weight version: Approx. 410 yds/375m chunky-weight yarn

Finished Size in both weights:
Shoulder Section: approx. 18”/46cm across x 14”/35.5cm deep, folded.
Cowl Collar: Approx. 22”/56cm around x 7”/18cm deep

Thank you Kathy C. for sharing your Two-Point cowl with us and inspiring us to knit our own Two-Point Cowls!
DID YOU KNOW…
The Two-Point Cowl pattern is available to purchase as a
Ravelry In-Store Download!  Just ask at the counter and we would be happy to purchase the pattern on your behalf through Ravelry and have it emailed to you.

Janet & Louise have been busy filling in the workshop calendar with some new class dates for February & March.  Here’s what has been scheduled so far:

NEW DATE…
“ALASKA” FAIRISLE HAT – Learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle” Knitting Technique

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!

The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.

Janet has recently revised the crown shaping for this hat, as shown in the picture.  The instructions for this alternate crown shaping will be provided in class.  All prior students are welcome to this handout – please ask for it the next time you are in the shop!

(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)

Attention Machine Knitters!!
This striking Celtic Braided Knot Scarf is easy to knit and very wearable!  The Tuck Stitch is easy to commit to memory and knits up quickly on the machine.  The fabric is then separated into 4 “strips” individually knit so that the centre 2 can be braided into the Celtic Knot and the edge 2 sections are worked in Tuck Stitch.  Once the Celtic Knot is completed, the 4 “strips” are re-hung to the machine to complete the final few inches of the scarf.  Optional fringe is added to complete the look.  To wear, the tail of the scarf is passed over the Tuck Stitch sections and under the Celtic Knot.  Choose to wear it over your coat with the knot centered or off of one shoulder, or wear it over your clothes as a fashion accessory.

Join Janet and be a part of this Club exclusive to Machine Knitters. Knitters can expect to be exposed to numerous new stitches and techniques in hand manipulation, machine patterning, bindings, trims and finishing techniques. Each square knits up quickly and easily on the LK150 knitting machine. By the end of the sessions, students will have completed many knit squares showcasing what they have learned and it is recommended assembling them to create a beautiful throw highlighting the varying new stitches.

We are pleased to offer all participants a 15% discount when they purchase sufficient yarn from London Yarns to complete this on-going project.  Students may choose multiple colours or a solid shade throughout.

All of the stitch techniques learned can be combined and transferred to many other aspects of your knitting!   Use your newly mastered stitches (or combinations thereof) in garments, baby blankets or home décor items or to create scarves, wraps, sweater panel designs and/or afghan panels.  The possibilities are limitless!

This “get-together” for machine knitters will encourage “Show & Tell” and will be an outlet for machine knitters to share their projects, ideas, and questions.

You will be knitting samples of the new stitches or techniques right in class, and should questions arise from the group, they will be addressed at the next session.  EVEN IF you were unable to attend one of the sessions you will still receive all of the hand-out materials!

THIS CLASS IS PERFECT FOR ALL BEGINNER KNITTERS & THOSE THAT WANT TO IMPROVE UPON THEIR KNITTING SKILLS

Lately we have had loads of requests to do a workshop on fixing mistakes. Well here it is! This hands-on class will not only teach you how to deal with all kinds of “knitting disasters” like dropped and twisted stitches and un-picking one or many rows, but will also deal with things like; “how do I know what row of my pattern I’m on” and “Oh-No! All of the stitches fell off of my needle! What do I do? And “Oh-No! The phone rang, I set down my knitting and now I don’t know how to start up again! So often customers tell us that they unraveled all of their knitting and started over simply because they didn’t have the skills to fix their mistake; Oh My! Never again after this workshop! Simply put, all beginner knitters can benefit from taking this class.

Pre-Requisite: Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

SUPER CHUNKY CABLED COWL
One 2-hour Session
Cost:  $55 (includes yarn & pattern)
Date & Time:  Friday, February 14/20 from 10 am – 12 pm
Teacher: Louise

This class will give you a chance to work with a bulky weight yarn that knits up quickly and at the same time, add to your knitting skills repertoire!  This Cabled Cowl class is suitable for all knitters, from beginners who know how to knit & purl to the experienced who want to brush up on their cable skills (i.e. How to prevent “that gap” at the cable crossings).  And, you may choose if you prefer to knit the pattern as a cowl, or to finish it as a scarf.

During class you will learn how to read a pattern, do a provisional cast on, keep borders aligned, seed stitch, crossing cables both right & left, use of cable needle, markers & lifeline, and to finish your Cowl, you have the choice of mattress stitch, 3-needle cast-off or grafting.  Plus any number of other skills/techniques that may arise in class from what we affectionately call a “Teachable Moment” (i.e. picking up stitches, ripping back, fixing miss-crossed cables, etc).
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches
