IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS

Monday, January 13, 2020 – It’s the little things

It’s the little things in life that can make all the difference in the world.  And it’s the little things that are often the most precious and most appreciated.  Today, we bring you a few ‘little things’ that might interest you and brighten your day.

Introducing…
Palette by Knit Picks

Palette is Knit Picks’ beloved fingering weight yarn; you could call it their practical magnum opus!  Made from 100% Peruvian Highland wool and available in a rainbow of colours that are expansive, ever-growing and ever-reliable. Designed especially for Fair Isle and colourwork, Palette features hues that span the entire gradated wheel, including a full complement of heathers and supporting solid colours.  You’ll find all the colours you need for stunning colourwork projects.

Use together in a single project for sweeping tonal gradients or choose a selection of hues for dramatic pops of colour.  Consider Palette for warm and durable socks, slim-fit sweaters or felted projects galore; it will quickly find a permanent place in your stash and never disappoint.

Choose from vibrant reds to royal purples (and everything in between), from cheerful cyan through to dramatic dark green (and everything in between) and from earthy browns to bright white (and everything in between)
150 colours in all!!

GRANDMA’S SECRET SPOT REMOVER™ (2oz)
It’s like a little washing machine in a bottle!!

Have a tough stain?  You will never use anything else!

Amazingly, it even removes old stains as well!  Try it on those stains that have aged in, or ones that have gone through the washing machine already. The best part is that it is concentrated.  Just one 2 oz. bottle can last you up to a year with normal use.

GRANDMA’S SECRET JEWELRY CLEANER™ (3oz)
Give Your Jewelry A Bath Every Day!!

Remember how your jewelry would sparkle and shine when it was new?  With everyday exposure to soaps, lotions, body oils and perspiration, your jewelry can lose its twinkle. With daily use of Grandma’s Secret Jewelry Cleaner your jewelry will always maintain its vibrancy and luster.  Safe enough to use on your diamonds, precious stones, gold, silver and platinum jewelry (not for use on Pearls).  Made in the USA.

Don’t Just Clean Your Jewelry…Make It Sparkle!

Directions: Apply one pump directly onto the surface of the item being cleaned. For most effective use, Grandma recommends using a soft toothbrush daily to remove build-up and residue. Simply spray and brush gently. To restore shine, rinse thoroughly in warm water and blot with a soft cloth.

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!

The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.

Janet has recently revised the crown shaping for this hat, as shown in the picture.  The instructions for this alternate crown shaping will be provided in class.  All prior students are welcome to this handout – please ask for it the next time you are in the shop!

(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; comfortable working in the round on circular or double pointed needles

SPACE STILL AVAILABLE…
PROVISIONAL CAST-ON
(The perfect start for the perfect ending!)
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $50
Date & Time:  Friday, January 17/20 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

It seems that of late many knitting patterns are asking you to begin with a “Provisional Cast-On”.  Some patterns offer it as a suggestion or option, but what is it?  I’m glad you asked!  A Provisional Cast-On is a method of casting on where the stitches that you start with are left “live” so that you can collect them later.  This method of cast-on comes in very handy and useful for many knitted projects including scarves, cowls, hems, afghan blocks or strips as well as neckline openings.  Use it any time in knitting where it would be nice to “finish where you started” without the bulk of having to sew the 2 pieces together.  Please join Janet to learn and practice this invaluable knitting technique.  Although there are many ways to achieve the Provisional Cast-On, we are going to learn the Crochet Cast-On method in this workshop.  You do not need to know how to Crochet to take this class.  By casting on with this method, you can later collect the live stitches to join your work.  This lends itself very nicely when Grafting/Kitchener Stitch or a 3-Needle Cast-Off/Bind-Off is used to join the knitting together.  It is also a beautiful way to join a hem, either plain or picot, with no sewing and no worrying about lining up your stitches.  The cast-on that we learn is also useful even if you don’t use it provisionally. The resulting edge looks exactly the same as when we cast-off in hand knitting so one edge of your knitting will look the same as the other!  Perfect for scarves and dishcloths and many other knitted items.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

Hope you have a ‘hoot’ shopping for the little things we shared with you today!
