NEW PATTERNS

Monday, January 6, 2020 – New Patterns

As promised, today we are starting a brand new year by launching two BRAND NEW Shawl patterns designed by our very own Cathy & Judy!  Cathy has designed the pattern for hand knitters and Judy has written it for machine knitters.

The shawl pattern,
“Wrapped In Luxury” is written for use with two weights of yarn:  Sport/DK (# 3) and Worsted/Aran (# 4).  The finished size in both weights of yarn is 20” x 56”.

The shawl consists of a stocking stitch panel bordered with delicate lace work that adds interest to this beautiful yet functional shawl.  It is knit flat and seamed on one shoulder.

Dress it up or dress it down with your choice of yarn.   Wear your new Wrapped In Luxury shawl indoors or over a coat to dress it up and add extra warmth.

This blue Wrapped in Luxury shawl was knit with one strand each of Katia Air Lux (col. 66) and Drizzle (col. 8005 aqua) held together throughout, following the DK weight instructions and is on display at the store.

This orange Wrapped in Luxury shawl was knit with Rowan Fine Art Aran (now discontinued) using the Worsted weight instructions.

All you hand knitters AND machine knitters…Hurry in to get your copy of Wrapped In Luxury!

Or, would you rather a new warm & cozy scarf to wrap up in?  Have a look at this Snowtracks Scarf

We knit our Snowtracks Scarf, a free pattern compliments of Purl Soho, using a double strand of Patons Alpaca Blend on 10mm needles, thus matching the bulky gauge but the resulting fabric is not weighty.  A quick and easy knit that will definitely keep the chill off.

Our model garment scarf was knit on 10mm needles and measures 9” wide x 96” long and used 3 balls of Alpaca Blend; using just two balls would shorten the scarf to 48” long.

We have two newly scheduled classes this month.  If you can come, please call 519-474-0403 to register with your payment information.

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!

The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.

Janet has recently revised the crown shaping for this hat, as shown in the picture.  The instructions for this alternate crown shaping will be provided in class.  All prior students are welcome to this handout – please ask for it the next time you are in the shop!

(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; comfortable working in the round on circular or double pointed needles

PROVISIONAL CAST-ON
(The perfect start for the perfect ending!)
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $50
Date & Time:  Friday, January 17/20 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

It seems that of late many knitting patterns are asking you to begin with a “Provisional Cast-On”.  Some patterns offer it as a suggestion or option, but what is it?  I’m glad you asked!  A Provisional Cast-On is a method of casting on where the stitches that you start with are left “live” so that you can collect them later.  This method of cast-on comes in very handy and useful for many knitted projects including scarves, cowls, hems, afghan blocks or strips as well as neckline openings.  Use it any time in knitting where it would be nice to “finish where you started” without the bulk of having to sew the 2 pieces together.  Please join Janet to learn and practice this invaluable knitting technique.  Although there are many ways to achieve the Provisional Cast-On, we are going to learn the Crochet Cast-On method in this workshop.  You do not need to know how to Crochet to take this class.  By casting on with this method, you can later collect the live stitches to join your work.  This lends itself very nicely when Grafting/Kitchener Stitch or a 3-Needle Cast-Off/Bind-Off is used to join the knitting together.  It is also a beautiful way to join a hem, either plain or picot, with no sewing and no worrying about lining up your stitches.  The cast-on that we learn is also useful even if you don’t use it provisionally. The resulting edge looks exactly the same as when we cast-off in hand knitting so one edge of your knitting will look the same as the other!  Perfect for scarves and dishcloths and many other knitted items.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

Stayed tuned, as we have some interesting things to share with you over the next few weeks.
Patti-Ann
