A new ‘Colour of the Month’ and a new complimentary colourway to go with has arrived from Ancient Arts.
’We’re taking a detour from our trip around the world this month to bring you a fabulous colourway that could only be inspired by a flower that you might find in the Adam’s Family greenhouse – Zombie Orchid! Don’t let the name fool you, this colourway is anything but spooky (even if it does have a touch of brains).  Each skein is layered with deep beautiful purples, silver fog greys, vibrant greens, just a hint of pumpkin orange, and brain pink that would make for a wonderful addition to your own festive yarn garden!  Just like its cousin the Corpse Flower, Zombie Orchid will only bloom once this month before it disappears so get yours now!’ - Ancient Arts Yarns

Ancient Arts has included a very special limited edition complementary colourway as part of the Colour of the Month, “Braaaaains!”
Not just a hit with the zombie crowd, this lovely colourway is sure to delight anyone who sees it!

NEW COLOURWAYS…
LITTLE NETTLE SOFT
from Ancient Arts Yarns

This fabulous fingering weight yarn is an eco-friendly yarn!  Little Nettle Soft is made from sustainable natural fibres – a blend of fine merino and nettle, yes - NETTLE!  And, Ancient Arts uses a hand dying process with low impact techniques.

Nettle is a highly sustainable low impact plant fibre resulting in a yarn that is warm in winter but breathes in summer and can be used for a wide range of projects.  Nettle gives this yarn stunning lustre, drape, and great stitch definition, and adds a lovely contrast to the hand dyed colours as it takes the dye in a different way than animal fibres do, thus creating a ‘heathered effect’ to the yarn.

A note from Ancient Arts about their Little Nettle Soft yarn:

“One of the nifty things about the nettle is that it is softer than linen or hemp and very white.  It gets softer and softer over time just like them, but has a silky handle right from day one.  It’s strong and insulating.  Plus, it is a highly desirable source of plant fibres as nettle can be grown without the use of a lot of herbicides/pesticides and without a lot of fertilizers.  One of the real drawbacks to cotton production is the need for a great deal of all three of these things.  Nettle is a very sustainable low impact fibre so it makes a great choice both for its characteristics and for its environmental qualities too!  People have been using nettle to make clothing since the late Neolithic age which fits quite nicely with our Ancient Arts name.  The nettle in our yarn is grown in several countries in Northern Europe and spun at a mill in Italy.”

Did you know...Little Nettle Soft is an all-natural, durable sock yarn?
That’s right; Little Nettle Soft is a durable sock yarn that contains NO synthetic fibres at all!  The nettle provides durability to the yarn in the same way that nylon usually does.

Consider this:  Socks have been knit for centuries before the addition of nylon to the yarn.  So it’s clear that there are other, more eco-friendly alternatives to producing a durable sock yarn – like Nettle, for example.

So, come on in to the shop and check out this newest addition to our ‘sock yarn’ selection.  And, please keep in mind that this durable, 100% natural fibre yarn is also a great choice for all kinds of light-weight projects like shawls, hats, cowls, accessories, etc.

Saltwater Mittens
“From the Island of Newfoundland, More Than 20 Heritage Designs to Knit”
by Christine LeGrow & Shirley A. Scott

Woolen mittens have long been a Newfoundlander’s best friend. In a quirky climate of freeze, thaw, blow, and drizzle, good mittens made all tasks easier—to split birch, hammer a nail, gut a fish, draw water, hang clothes, or snare a rabbit. Social life, too, always required the finest mittens and gloves.
These mittens are as practical as they are beautiful – fairisle knit with two colours means twice the warmth and wind resistance. The patterns are rated by difficulty and varied in style, including wristers (aka fingerless mitts), gloves, thumbless mitts for babies, and of course, classic mittens for all.

The dozens of colour photographs will inspire you to make your own bold colour choices. Plus, the nuggets of history, and tales of mittens and their knitters, make this a book everyone can enjoy.

The two authors have been collecting, knitting, and studying Newfoundland mittens for the past 40 years, and have expertly and painstakingly recreated these heritage patterns with detailed instructions.

All designs were created using Briggs & Little wool yarns - Heritage, Regal and Sport.

Saltwater Classics
“Vamps, Mitts and Caps from the Island of Newfoundland, More Than 25 Favourite Designs”
by Christine LeGrow and Shirley A. Scott

"From the top of your head to the tips of your toes, Saltwater Classics will keep you toasty warm with beautiful hand-knitted hats, mitts, gloves, socks and vamps (slippers). As their follow-up to the best-selling Saltwater Mittens, Christine LeGrow and Shirley A. Scott have collected and expertly recreated some of Newfoundland’s best loved knitwear.

Along the way, they’ve sprinkled in a hefty dose of their own creative flair in presenting stunning patterns you’ll never see anywhere else. From the salt-and-pepper cap to boot socks, and from trigger mitts to vamps, this book has something for everyone. All patterns are rated by difficulty and clearly presented for today’s knitters. The dozens of colour photographs will inspire you to make your own bold colour choices—and encourage you to go outside and face the elements in your new cozy pieces of knitwear. Featuring tips, tricks, and tales, Saltwater Classics is a book for everyone."
All designs were created using Briggs & Little wool yarns - Heritage, Regal and Sport.

Please keep well and stay safe during any time off that you may have.  We shall chat again briefly next Monday.
