NEW SHAWL, NEW CARDS & MKAL

Monday, November 18/19 – New Shawl, New Cards & MKAL

We have a brand new Shawl on display at the store and wanted to share it with you today...

A relatively easy knit, this shawl consists of three sections comprised of garter stitch, slip stitch and an 8-row lace section – the pattern gives both written and charted instructions for the lace section.

7th Inning Stretch Ravelry Page
Pattern Size, as written:  88” wingspan x 28” tall.  Note: Shawl is an asymmetrical triangle. The 3 side edges measure 88”, 66” and 46” after blocking.

The pattern asks for a total of 800 mtrs of worsted weight yarn – 400 mtrs in a solid/heathered colour and 400 mtrs in a verigated or self-striping colourway.

We chose to knit it with Sport weight yarn instead and changed our needle size from the recommended 5.5mm down to 4.5mm, to match the yarn we selected and then followed the pattern as written.

London Yarns Mods:

We used Sport weight yarn with 4.5mm needles.  We knit our Shawl using one ball of Berroco Millefiori Light – multi-coloured (320 mtrs/100gr) and 3 skeins of Cascade 220 Sport – solid colour (450 mtrs total).

Our 7th Inning Stretch Shawl measured 115” wingspan x 33” deep when blocked.

The 3 side edges of our asymmetrical triangle measure 115” x 77” x 57” after blocking.  Knit with sport weight yarn, this shawl turned out to be generously sized, easy to wrap up in and yet pleasantly lightweight – warmth without bulk, yeah!

Here are a few other DK weight yarns that would also make for a lovely 7th Inning Shawl:

As an alternative... if you would like your shawl to be a bit smaller in size, why not knit it using Fingering/Sock weight yarn?  That would considerably open up yarn selections, options and colour combinations!

NEW GREETING CARD COLLECTION…

Local London area Photographer, Darrell Filipchuk (Janet’s husband) has created his own line of Greeting Cards channeling his passion for taking shots of nature; birds, wildlife, fauna and flora.  Perhaps you have already seen his cards at London Yarns?

Well, Darrell has been busy, yet again, capturing some of our ‘fine fleeced Alpaca friends’ during shearing day!  Look how adorable these faces are, each one with their own personality shining through…

Each of the above 18 photos are now in stock at London Yarns & available as Greeting Cards from Imagine Photography.

The cards are blank inside, making them suitable for many occasions; an envelope is included & both are neatly packaged in clear cellophane wrapping.  The 4” x 6” photograph on the front of the card is removable, so it can be framed & enjoyed for years to come.

The back of the card is shown here...

Date & Time:  Saturday, December 12/19 from 10 am – 1 pm
Teacher: Janet

CLICK HERE to view some of our Class Graduates Hats!!

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!

The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class. There is homework associated with this class and the class fills quickly, so make sure you register early!

(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)
Rated:  All Knitters

CUTTING INTO YOUR KNITS
One 2.5-Hour Session
Cost:  $50
Date & Time:  Friday, November 22/19 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher:  Janet
YIKES! Cutting my knitting?  Are you kidding?  Believe it or not cutting into your knits can have a great benefit.  You can make a garment longer, make a garment shorter, or add a pocket where no pocket was before.  You can even knit your sweaters in the round in a giant tube and cut in the sleeves, neckline or cardigan front.  This hands-on class will give you the confidence to take scissors to your knitting with no fear!  We guarantee that your knitting will not dissolve when you cut into it!  By working through the many in-class samples, you will feel empowered to cut your knits when necessary or when it makes the knitting of the project more enjoyable.  This class is for everyone who knits!
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches

PERFECT SEAMS!
One 3-hour Session
Cost:  $60
Date & Time:  Wednesday, November 27/19 from 10 am – 1 pm
Teacher: Janet

Join Janet to learn an amazing seaming technique called Mattress Stitch that produces a virtually INVISIBLE seam.  This technique works for all seams; garments with side seams, sleeve seams, shoulder seams, afghan panels, blocks or squares.  Anywhere you have a seam to sew, Mattress Stitch works perfectly.  By combining our two most popular workshops, students will also learn methods of increasing and decreasing that will make the seaming process even more streamlined, preparing the edges of your fabric for the seaming to follow.  This workshop is hands-on, so students will be knitting and practising all of the seaming and finishing techniques covered on samples that they will keep with their notes and hand outs for future reference.  As well, students will learn and knit the famous, “3 Needle Cast-Off or Bind-Off” technique that is perfect for joining shoulders.  Imagine; knit your shoulders together with no hand sewing! Last, but not least, we will learn different ways of darning in those pesky yarn tails making sure they are not only secure, but they leave no distortion, bulk, or bleed through on the finished or “public” side of the fabric.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

Hope you have a Happy Day.
Patti-Ann
