WILL YOU JOIN IN THE FUN?

Monday, November 11/19 –  Will you join in the fun?

With cooler temperatures setting in, shorter daylight hours and of course, that ‘white stuff’ on the ground, looks like we are definitely ‘head’-ing {pun intended :0} into ‘hat wearing weather’, wouldn’t you say?!?

How would you like to have a new hat for yourself or for a friend for the 2019-2020 winter season? Or two? Or three perhaps?  Well, we’ve got just the thing for you!!!

Will you join us for a BRAND NEW Mystery Knit-A-Long?

We had such fun last January with our “Trio of Hats MKAL” that we have collected another
distinctive Trio of Hats and organized a NEW Mystery Knit-A-Long (MKAL)!  All three hats are different from the ones knit last January – different styles, different techniques, different patterns!

BRAND NEW MKAL...

This all new Mystery Knit-A-Long is going to be fun-Fun-FUN and unique, too!

MKAL – ‘A Trio of Hats’
  • 6 weeks
  • 3 hats
  • 3 different construction techniques
  • 3 weights of yarn

Each hat has a different construction technique, a different style, and each hat in the trio uses a different weight of yarn.  Mystery Hat “A” will consist of 3 clues, Mystery Hat “B” will consist of 2 clues, and finally, Mystery Hat “C” will be one single clue – a total of 6 clues, which will be sent out weekly by email on Monday’s, starting Nov. 18th.  The complete printed patterns (included in the cost) will be purchased from Ravelry and sent to you by email at the end of the MKAL.

The MKAL registration fee of $90 includes: 6 weekly clues, all yarn needed to complete all 3 hats & the purchased Ravelry patterns.

Registration begins today and the MKAL starts November 18/19!  So, hurry in (or call in) to sign up; choose your yarns, your colours & share in our enthusiasm to knit three new hats!!

Date & Time: Saturday, December 7/19 from 10 am – 1 pm

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!

The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class. There is homework associated with this class and the class fills quickly, so make sure you register early!

Janet has recently revised the crown shaping for this hat, as shown in the picture.  The instructions for this alternate crown shaping will be provided in class.  All prior students are welcome to this handout – please ask for it the next time you are in the shop!
(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)

CUTTING INTO YOUR KNITS
One 2.5-Hour Session
Cost:  $50
Date & Time:  Friday, November 22/19 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher:  Janet
YIKES! Cutting my knitting?  Are you kidding?  Believe it or not cutting into your knits can have a great benefit.  You can make a garment longer, make a garment shorter, or add a pocket where no pocket was before.  You can even knit your sweaters in the round in a giant tube and cut in the sleeves, neckline or cardigan front.  This hands-on class will give you the confidence to take scissors to your knitting with no fear!  We guarantee that your knitting will not dissolve when you cut into it!  By working through the many in-class samples, you will feel empowered to cut your knits when necessary or when it makes the knitting of the project more enjoyable.  This class is for everyone who knits!

PERFECT SEAMS!
One 3-hour Session
Cost:  $60
Date & Time:  Wednesday, November 27/19 from 10 am – 1 pm
Teacher: Janet

Join Janet to learn an amazing seaming technique called Mattress Stitch that produces a virtually INVISIBLE seam.  This technique works for all seams; garments with side seams, sleeve seams, shoulder seams, afghan panels, blocks or squares.  Anywhere you have a seam to sew, Mattress Stitch works perfectly.  By combining our two most popular workshops, students will also learn methods of increasing and decreasing that will make the seaming process even more streamlined, preparing the edges of your fabric for the seaming to follow.  This workshop is hands-on, so students will be knitting and practising all of the seaming and finishing techniques covered on samples that they will keep with their notes and hand outs for future reference.  As well, students will learn and knit the famous, “3 Needle Cast-Off or Bind-Off” technique that is perfect for joining shoulders.  Imagine; knit your shoulders together with no hand sewing! Last, but not least, we will learn different ways of darning in those pesky yarn tails making sure they are not only secure, but they leave no distortion, bulk, or bleed through on the finished or “public” side of the fabric.

PROVISIONAL CAST-ON (The perfect start for the perfect ending!)
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $50
Date & Time:  Friday, December 6/19 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

It seems that of late many knitting patterns are asking you to begin with a “Provisional Cast-On”.  Some patterns offer it as a suggestion or option, but what is it?  I’m glad you asked!  A Provisional Cast-On is a method of casting on where the stitches that you start with are left “live” so that you can collect them later.  This method of cast-on comes in very handy and useful for many knitted projects including scarves, cowls, hems, afghan blocks or strips as well as neckline openings.  Use it any time in knitting where it would be nice to “finish where you started” without the bulk of having to sew the 2 pieces together.  Please join Janet to learn and practice this invaluable knitting technique.  Although there are many ways to achieve the Provisional Cast-On, we are going to learn the Crochet Cast-On method in this workshop.  You do not need to know how to crochet to take this class.  By casting on with this method, you can later collect the live stitches to join your work.  This lends itself very nicely when Grafting/Kitchener Stitch or a 3-Needle Cast-Off/Bind-Off is used to join the knitting together.  It is also a beautiful way to join a hem, either plain or picot, with no sewing and no worrying about lining up your stitches.  The cast-on that we learn is also useful even if you don’t use it provisionally. The resulting edge looks exactly the same as when we cast-off in hand knitting so one edge of your knitting will look the same as the other!  Perfect for scarves and dishcloths and many other knitted items.
