NEW ARRIVALS

Monday, October 28/19 – New Arrivals

This week we have brand new arrivals, new colours, and new books to share with you.

Saltwater Mittens
“From the Island of Newfoundland,
More Than 20 Heritage Designs to Knit”
by Christine LeGrow & Shirley A. Scott

Woolen mittens have long been a Newfoundlander’s best friend. In a quirky climate of freeze, thaw, blow, and drizzle, good mittens made all tasks easier—to split birch, hammer a nail, gut a fish, draw water, hang clothes, or snare a rabbit. Social life, too, always required the finest mittens and gloves.

These mittens are as practical as they are beautiful – fairisle knit with two colours means twice the warmth and wind resistance. The patterns are rated by difficulty and varied in style, including wristers (aka fingerless mitts), gloves, thumbless mitts for babies, and of course, classic mittens for all.

The dozens of colour photographs will inspire you to make your own bold colour choices. Plus, the nuggets of history, and tales of mittens and their knitters, make this a book everyone can enjoy.

The two authors have been collecting, knitting, and studying Newfoundland mittens for the past 40 years, and have expertly and painstakingly recreated these heritage patterns with detailed instructions.

All designs were created using Briggs & Little wool yarns - Heritage, Regal and Sport.

Saltwater Classics
“Vamps, Mitts and Caps from the Island of Newfoundland
More Than 25 Favourite Designs”
by Christine LeGrow and Shirley A. Scott

"From the top of your head to the tips of your toes, Saltwater Classics will keep you toasty warm with beautiful hand-knitted hats, mitts, gloves, socks and vamps (slippers). As their follow-up to the best-selling Saltwater Mittens, Christine LeGrow and Shirley A. Scott have collected and expertly recreated some of Newfoundland’s best loved knitwear.

Along the way, they’ve sprinkled in a hefty dose of their own creative flair in presenting stunning patterns you’ll never see anywhere else. From the salt-and-pepper cap to boot socks, and from trigger mitts to vamps, this book has something for everyone. All patterns are rated by difficulty and clearly presented for today’s knitters. The dozens of colour photographs will inspire you to make your own bold colour choices—and encourage you to go outside and face the elements in your new cozy pieces of knitwear. Featuring tips, tricks, and tales, Saltwater Classics is a book for everyone."

All designs were created using Briggs & Little wool yarns - Heritage, Regal and Sport.

NEW DATE...
“ALASKA” FAIRISLE HAT – Learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle” Knitting Technique
One 3-hour Session
Cost:  $75 (yarn* & pattern included)
Date & Time:
Wednesday, November 6/19 from 10 am – 1 pm (NEW DATE)
Wednesday, October 30/19 from 10 am – 1 pm (full)
Teacher: Janet

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!  The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.
(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; comfortable working in the round on circular or double pointed needles

BRICK & MORTAR SHAWL
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $70 (Includes $40 Yarn Credit & Pattern Leaflet)
Date & Time:  Saturday, November 9/19 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher:  Janet

Join Janet to knit the newest Shawl pattern released by London Yarns!  This shawl can be knit using 2 colours or 1 single colour of fingering weight yarn.  This shawl is suitable for knitters of all skill levels.  The pattern becomes intuitive after a few repeats, making this knit a very relaxing, rhythmic pleasure to work on.  Knitting begins at the centre bottom point, casting on only 4 stitches and the shawl grows by one “brick” when you complete each pattern section.  Participants can expect to learn the “knit-on” cast-on, mosaic knitting on both right and wrong side rows, and a neat little trick to carry the colour not in use inconspicuously up the brick edge of the shawl.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

Only 2 seats left…

These mitts are interesting to knit and will be admired by all who see them!  The mitts are knit flat and then seamed using mattress stitch.  The cable pattern is intricate and will give you an opportunity to learn how to keep several different patterns working alongside each other, all at the same time.  We will also learn how to pick up stitches, how to increase & decrease “while keeping the pattern correct”.  Choice of two cuffs styles available.
Rated:  Intermediate Course
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches & familiar with cable techniques

PERFECT SEAMS!
One 3-hour Session
Cost:  $60
Date & Time:  Saturday, November 2/19 from 10 am – 1 pm
Teacher: Janet

Join Janet to learn an amazing seaming technique called Mattress Stitch that produces a virtually INVISIBLE seam.  This technique works for all seams; garments with side seams, sleeve seams, shoulder seams, afghan panels, blocks or squares.  Anywhere you have a seam to sew, Mattress Stitch works perfectly.  By combining our two most popular workshops, students will also learn methods of increasing and decreasing that will make the seaming process even more streamlined, preparing the edges of your fabric for the seaming to follow.  This workshop is hands-on, so students will be knitting and practising all of the seaming and finishing techniques covered on samples that they will keep with their notes and hand outs for future reference.  As well, students will learn and knit the famous, “3 Needle Cast-Off or Bind-Off” technique that is perfect for joining shoulders.  Imagine; knit your shoulders together with no hand sewing! Last, but not least, we will learn different ways of darning in those pesky yarn tails making sure they are not only secure, but they leave no distortion, bulk, or bleed through on the finished or “public” side of the fabric.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

NEW DATE...
SUPER CHUNKY CABLED COWL

One 2-hour Session
Cost:  $55 (includes yarn & pattern)
Date & Time:  Friday, November 15/19 from 10 am – 12 pm
Teacher: Louise

This class will give you a chance to work with a bulky weight yarn that knits up quickly and at the same time, add to your knitting skills repertoire!  This Cabled Cowl class is suitable for all knitters, from beginners who know how to knit & purl to the experienced who want to brush up on their cable skills (i.e. How to prevent “that gap” at the cable crossings).  And, you may choose if you prefer to knit the pattern as a cowl, or to finish it as a scarf.

During class you will learn how to read a pattern, do a provisional cast on, keep borders aligned, seed stitch, crossing cables both right & left, use of cable needle, markers & lifeline, and to finish your Cowl, you have the choice of mattress stitch, 3-needle cast-off or grafting.  Plus any number of other skills/techniques that may arise in class from what we affectionately call a “Teachable Moment” (i.e. picking up stitches, ripping back, fixing miss-crossed cables, etc).
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches

We will have even more new & exciting things to share with you again next week.  Until then, please take care and thanks SO MUCH for reading!
