GET A HEAD START

Monday, September 23/19 – Get a Head Start on your Knitting!

Want to get a head start on knitting for the ‘soon to be here’ cooler weather?  Why not do some Cowl knitting?  The Hibernate Cowl is a speedy & fun knit – make one for yourself and all your friends!

The Hibernate Cowl pattern has three versions included in it – “Hibernate”, “Nestle” and “Nestle – relaxed size”.  We have knit up two of them here:

A quick and easy knit!  The Cowl calls for 192 mtrs of Chunky weight yarn to knit the Hibernate Cowl (we knit it with ILLIMANI AMELIE).

This Amelie Hibernate Cowl is sooooo light & soft, and so cozy.  Amelie is a dream to work with!!

(Purchase the pattern on Ravelry, or let London Yarns purchase it on your behalf – see details below.)

Hibernate Cowl Mods:  We knit the Cowl using 8mm and 12mm needles to get gauge with ILLIMANI AMELIE and the completed Cowl took 65 grams (195 mtrs) of Amelie; you could easily knit 2 cowls out of 3 skeins of Amelie.  And, for the next time, I think that instead of the k4, p1 rib as written, we will knit a k3, p2 rib.

Nestle Cowl
‘Relaxed Size’ version

The Nestle Cowl is included with the Hibernate Cowl pattern and is knit using a little lighter weight yarn than Hibernate calls for.

Mods:  we used 6.5mm x 60cm and 10mm x 60cm needles.  We used approx. 270 mtrs of Worsted weight yarn (shown knit with Rustic Aran by James C. Brett, colour # DAT44).  And for the rib, we did a k3, p2 rib instead of the 4 x 1 rib as written.

(Purchase the pattern on Ravelry, or let London Yarns purchase it on your behalf – see details below.)

Not a Cowl person?  That’s ok.  How about a lovely mosaic knit shawl to keep the chill off on these cool September nights?

We knit this shawl with Ultra Wool DK from Berroco in colours 8301 cream, 83152 dark blue heather and 83109 steel grey.   It would be equally as beautiful knit with Vintage DK if you prefer a wool blend.  (Purchase the pattern on Ravelry, or let London Yarns purchase it on your behalf – see details below.)

Meet Me at Midnight is a really fun Mosaic knit!  The pattern is well written and easy to follow and the designer includes a few helpful hints too.  Knit from centre neck down toward the point using a DK weight yarn in three colours.

What is Mosaic knitting, you ask?  Here is a brief summary:

“Mosaic knitting may be the most unknown form of colorwork. Everyone has heard about intarsia or Fair Isle, but whenever I teach a class in this technique, my students always ask, “Why haven’t we heard about this before?” Mosaic knitting is perfect for beginners who are attempting colorwork for the first time. If you’ve worked stripes in two colors, you can work mosaic knitting. Mosaic patterns are created by slipping stitches from the stripe below without working them.” -
quoted from Ann McDonald at Interweave

“Mosaic knitting is a method of colorwork that involves two simple techniques — slipping stitches and changing colors between rows. Each color is used for two consecutive rows before switching; this is the "dominant" color for that row. Stitches in each row that are not of the dominant color are simply slipped purlwise instead of being worked normally. This is how the movement of color is created and controlled throughout the pattern.” –
quoted from allfreeknitting.com

A few benefits of Mosaic Knitting:
  • Results is beautiful colourwork without the stress
  • Work with only ONE colour at a time – no floats, no carrying yarn, no bobbins, no juggling two colours in the same row!
  • Great for all skill levels, beginner through advanced
  • A wonderful technique to show case yarns with long gradient colour changes
  • Finished fabric maintains most of the stretch that regular stockinette has, unlike stranded knitting
  • Much easier to keep an even tension than Fairisle knitting

Did you know that many of the patterns available for purchase on Ravelry can be bought through London Yarns?

We participate in the Ravelry In-Store sales program which allows us to sell you patterns on Ravelry at the same price as advertised. The patterns are then emailed to you and placed in your Ravelry library (if you have one).  It is a win-win-win program!  The designer gets their full commission, the customer can buy the pattern, even if they don’t have an email address or Ravelry account, or prefer not to give out their payment information online, and we have the pleasure of helping you, our customers, fulfill your pattern preferences, along with a small commission from Ravelry for helping you.  See?!?!  Win-win-win!

Will you be coming?

Join Janet and be a part of this Club exclusive to Machine Knitters. Knitters can expect to be exposed to numerous new stitches and techniques in hand manipulation, machine patterning, bindings, trims and finishing techniques. Each square knits up quickly and easily on the LK150 knitting machine. By the end of the sessions, students will have completed many knit squares showcasing what they have learned and it is recommended assembling them to create a beautiful throw highlighting the varying new stitches.

We are pleased to offer all participants a 15% discount when they purchase sufficient yarn from London Yarns to complete this on-going project.  Students may choose multiple colours or a solid shade throughout.

All of the stitch techniques learned can be combined and transferred to many other aspects of your knitting!   Use your newly mastered stitches (or combinations thereof) in garments, baby blankets or home décor items or to create scarves, wraps, sweater panel designs and/or afghan panels.  The possibilities are limitless!

This “get-together” for machine knitters will encourage “Show & Tell” and will be an outlet for machine knitters to share their projects, ideas, and questions.

By becoming a member, you will be entitled to attend all 6 hands-on sessions and receive all of the relevant hand-out material for each session.  After the summer break, you will be able to register for the final 4 sessions of the year (September to December).  EVEN IF you were unable to attend one of the sessions you will still receive all of the hand-out materials!

You will be knitting samples of the new stitches or techniques right in class, and should questions arise from the group, they will be addressed at the next session.

Hey!  I just had a thought...why not take your Hibernate, Nestle and/or Meet Me at Midnight project out to the ‘Knitting in Nature Event’?!?  How’s that for timing, eh?
