Want to take your sock knitting to a whole new level?  Join us for a new “Master Sawks” Class with Jen at London Yarns!

Have you knit a bunch of pairs of cuff-down and/or toe-up socks and you’re starting to get bored? Let’s jump back on that ‘sock knitting bandwagon’ and re-energize your sock knitting by trying something completely different – SOCKS FROM THE HEEL OUT!

Yes, you heard that right!  Cast on at the heel and knit out towards the instep, knit down to the toe and then up to the cuff.  This interesting, new method of knitting socks will increase your knitting skills and get you excited about socks again!

Skills used/taught in this class:  knitting in the round, purling in the round, kfb, m1 lifted bar increase, k2tog and ssk decreases, k2togtbl decreases, k1tbl twisted stitches, twisted rib, 3-needle bind off, grafting/Kitchener stitch, sewn bind-off, Jenny’s Magic Cast On & Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off – we will be getting a refresher of all of these techniques in the class, so don't worry if some of them sound unfamiliar to you!

Rated:  All Experienced Sock Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  must be comfortable knitting socks on double-pointed needles; must have knit socks before; must be comfortable with knitting and purling in the round; must be comfortable with the Kitchener stitch (grafting). This class is not a class for beginners!  Please be prepared for “homework knitting” between classes.  Participants must be able to attend all classes.

Ancient Arts Yarns is an artisan hand dye company drawing our inspirations from nature, art, and our love of stories. We use only premium bases ethically sourced, ethically milled, and spun exclusively for us. Our yarns are ideal for knitting, crochet, weaving, and any other craft requiring a top-quality yarn. All yarns are individually hand dyed in small dye lots using environmentally conscious dyes and dyeing practices.

Many crafters want something just a little different, but don’t want to sacrifice quality, price, or time, and they want to feel good about what they are using. This is where Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts come in. All our yarn bases are carefully selected to be of the highest quality, while maintaining prices that are affordable.” – Ancient Arts Yarns

Introducing…

LITTLE NETTLE SOFT
from Ancient Arts Yarns

This fabulous fingering weight yarn is an eco-friendly yarn!  Little Nettle Soft is made from sustainable natural fibres – a blend of fine merino and nettle, yes - NETTLE!  And, Ancient Arts uses a hand dying process with low impact techniques.

Nettle is a highly sustainable low impact plant fibre resulting in a yarn that is warm in winter but breathes in summer and can be used for a wide range of projects.  Nettle gives this yarn stunning lustre, drape, and great stitch definition, and adds a lovely contrast to the hand dyed colours as it takes the dye in a different way than animal fibres do, thus creating a ‘heathered effect’ to the yarn.

A note from Ancient Arts about their Little Nettle Soft yarn:
“One of the nifty things about the nettle is that it is softer than linen or hemp and very white.  It gets softer and softer over time just like them, but has a silky handle right from day one.  It’s strong and insulating.  Plus, it is a highly desirable source of plant fibres as nettle can be grown without the use of a lot of herbicides/pesticides and without a lot of fertilizers.  One of the real drawbacks to cotton production is the need for a great deal of all three of these things.  Nettle is a very sustainable low impact fibre so it makes a great choice both for its characteristics and for its environmental qualities too!  People have been using nettle to make clothing since the late Neolithic age which fits quite nicely with our Ancient Arts name.  The nettle in our yarn is grown in several countries in Northern Europe and spun at a mill in Italy.”

The first batch of Little Nettle Soft to arrive at London Yarns was so favourably received,
we have brought in a much wider selection of colours to choose from.

LOOK!! at our newest shipment of LITTLE NETTLE SOFT!!  Whoo-Hoo!!

Did you know...Little Nettle Soft is an all-natural, durable sock yarn?
That’s right; Little Nettle Soft is a durable sock yarn that contains NO synthetic fibres at all!  The nettle provides durability to the yarn in the same way that nylon usually does.

Consider this:  Socks have been knit for centuries before the addition of nylon to the yarn.  So it’s clear that there are other, more eco-friendly alternatives to producing a durable sock yarn – like Nettle, for example.

So, come on in to the shop and check out this newest addition to our ‘sock yarn’ selection.  And, please keep in mind that this durable, 100% natural fibre yarn is also a great choice for all kinds of light-weight projects like shawls, hats, cowls, accessories, etc.

And now, here is some pattern inspiration made with a few of the yarns that are on sale this Wednesday:

Honeycomb Cowl
Complete this cozy, quick knit Cowl with just two skeins of ILLIMANI LLAMA II.  Finished size is approx. 13” high and 28” around.  Pattern available for purchase at London Yarns.

On Wednesday, August 7th, the yarn to knit the Honeycomb Cowl – LLAMA II is on SALE!!

Shimmering Waters Shawl

  • Uses 300 metres of DK/Sport weight yarn (shown knit with KATIA VERSAILLES yarn)
  • A triangle that is 60" along the top edge & 30” deep at the point
  • The 8-row pattern repeat is easy to knit and memorize
  • Finished Size is easily adjustable
  • Pattern available for purchase at London Yarns
Pattern Note:  This is a triangle shawl, knit from the point up.  The finished size is easily customized and the stitch pattern can be used with any weight of yarn – the thicker the yarn, the larger the shawl.  Knit the pattern as written using more or less metres to make a larger or smaller shawl; or choose to use a different weight of yarn with appropriately matched needles.

On Wednesday, August 7th, the yarn to knit the Shimmering Waters Shawl – KATIA VERSAILLES is on SALE!!

We used just one skein of ILLIMANI AMELIE to knit this cute hat (shown far left in charcoal):

Kiss My Pompoms Hat:  One-size will fit most average adult heads 20”- 23”.  Pattern contains 2 versions of toque with all-over cabled pattern.
(Purchase pattern on Ravelry, or let London Yarns purchase it on your behalf – see details below.)

On Wednesday, August 7th, the yarn to knit the Kiss My Pompoms Hat – ILLIMANI AMELIE is on SALE!!

The pattern calls for only three balls of KATIA COSMOS to complete this Shawl.

On Wednesday, August 7th, the yarn to knit the Cosmos Shawl – KATIA COSMOS is on SALE!!

A quick and easy knit!  The Cowl calls for 192 mtrs of Chunky weight yarn to knit the Hibernate Cowl (we knit it with ILLIMANI AMELIE).

This Amelie Hibernate Cowl is sooooo light & soft, and so cozy!!
(Purchase pattern on Ravelry, or let London Yarns purchase it on your behalf – see details below.)

Hibernate Cowl Mods:  We knit the Cowl using 8mm and 12mm needles to get gauge with ILLIMANI AMELIE and the completed Cowl took 65 grams (195 mtrs) of Amelie; you could easily knit 2 cowls out of 3 skeins of Amelie.  And, for the next time, I think that instead of the k4, p1 rib as written, we will knit a k3, p2 rib.

On Wednesday, August 7th, the yarn to knit the Hibernate Cowl – ILLIMANI AMELIE is on SALE!!

One skein of FLAX LACE made this “Verdant” shawl:

Verdant Shawl Mods:  We knit one extra repeat of the body chart (4 repeats total) before proceeding to the border.
We have a new model CROCHETED garment on display in the shop; perhaps you’ve seen it?  It’s the Crazy Eights Shawl.

Crocheted with a 4mm hook and 4 balls of Sugarbush Tahiti (500 mtrs total of fingering weight).  After the initial set up rows, the Crazy Eights Shawl is just a 2-row pattern repeat – “easy peasy”!

And the pattern/finished shawl size easily customized, as it is hooked from the point up.  So if you have more or less metres available, you can finish your shawl when you run out of yarn, resulting in a slightly larger or smaller shawl according to your preference.

Did you know that many of the patterns available for purchase on Ravelry can be bought through London Yarns?

We participate in the Ravelry In-Store sales program which allows us to sell you patterns on Ravelry at the same price as advertised. The patterns are then emailed to you and placed in your Ravelry library (if you have one).  It is a win-win-win program!  The designer gets their full commission, the customer can buy the pattern, even if they don’t have an email address or Ravelry account, or prefer not to give out their payment information online, and we have the pleasure of helping you, our customers, fulfill your pattern preferences, along with a small commission from Ravelry for helping you.  See?!?!  Win-win-win!
