SWIFTS, WINDERS, BOWLS, CADDIES & SKEINS

Monday, July 15/19 – Swifts, Winders, Bowls, Caddies & Skeins

Side Note:  Have you seen us on Instagram @LondonYarns?  Janet and Jen have decided to do a “Summer Sock Challenge Knit-Together”.  Each choose a different colour of Regia’s “Tutti Frutti Color”; both are working from the same Ravelry sock pattern (written in German – just to make things interesting!) but with different methods – Janet choose to knit cuff-down and Jen’s knitting toe-up with German short-rowing!

SSK Members Save 20% off

Have you happened to noticed how many more yarn companies are now presenting their yarns to us in skeins?  A “skein” (also called a ‘hank’) looks like this...

In fact, if you take a tour through our shop, you will definitely find quite a few yarns presented in skein format from a number of companies.

This week, in our
Wednesday Sale Event, we are featuring ALL SKEINS of yarn, along with the tools to wind them.

That’s right!!  Any and ALL yarn that is in a skein IS ON SALE!

On Wednesday, July 17th,
ALL SKEINS OF YARN
SSK Members Save 20% off

To ‘whet your appetite’ & get you planning ahead for a project or two (or three), here is a brief listing of some of the yarns, presented in SKEINS that will be discounted on Wednesday:

Ok, you now have ‘yarn in hand’ and are eager to get started on your project...B-U-T WAIT!!

Before we can begin our exciting new project, first we have to actually WIND the skein into a usable ball or cake.  WHY must we do this, you ask?!?!  Why can’t we just work directly from the skein?  Because, in the blink of an eye, your skein will go from this...

To this...

It’s true, some of us, though possibly very few, actually enjoy the process of ‘winding yarn the old-fashioned way’ – that is, enlisting the help of a friend, family member or loved one to sit with you, hands held out holding the open skein of yarn, while you patiently wind metre after metre after metre of, what seems to be, endless amounts of yarn into a hand-wound balls of yarn.  True, this process can contribute to some ‘quality time’ together, but from the stories we have heard, most ‘helpers’ tend to be a little reluctant and/or unenthusiastic.  So, what to do, what to do?!?!

Not to worry; we have the solution for you!!  All you need are two simple, uncomplicated pieces of equipment. What are they?  A
SWIFT and a BALL WINDER.  These are a “one time investment” that will make a world of difference in your knitting or crocheting lives.  In fact, you will wonder what you ever did without them and ‘WHY ON EARTH did I wait sooooo long to get them?’ (While it is true that you can use either a ball winder or a swift independently; but ideally, they work best in tandem with each other.)

The best part is, that this
Wednesday, July 17th, all of our Swifts & Ball Winders ARE ON SALE!!  If you already of have one without the other, now is the time to complete your set!  Purchase one or the other or both and SAVE!

Swifts & Ball Winders

A WOOL WINDER (also called a Ball Winder) is a hand-operated yarn winder for making center-pull balls that won't roll away.  A wool winder transforms a hank or skein into a ‘cake’, in effect going from this...

To this... in a matter of just minutes – what a time saver!!

(photos taken from Underground Crafters Tutorial – “How to Wind Yarn with a Swift and Winder”)
Ball Winders
(other styles may be available – see in store for details)

Knitters Pride Ball Winders are compact and light in weight, with built-in table clamps that will work on table thickness up to approx. 6.5cm (2.6") and will create a 4 oz (113 gr) center pull balls.

Or, if you prefer a more “hands-on” approach to winding a centre pull ball, we are including
Nostepinnes in our Sale Event. (See Nostepinne selection further on in this email.)

Swifts
An essential tool for any Knitter or Crocheter, the Yarn Swift (also called an Umbrella Swift) holds your skeins of yarn in place as you wind them into balls.  The Swifts fold down for compact and convenient storage when not in use...however, the Wood Swifts are so aesthetically pleasing you may just want to leave them set up and on display.

Metal Swift is sturdy and lightweight and opens to 60" and has two special features. The crank at the top allows you to wind skeins of yarn and the clamp is designed to allow you to adjust the angle at which the swift is resting from vertical to horizontal for easy winding and unwinding. This swift stands 16” tall and weighs about 1 pound (454 gr). The clamp at the base allows it to be easily attached to a table edge or shelf and can pivot for use at any angle.  Also useful for measuring off warp when weaving.  Comes with a hard plastic storage box.

Wood Swifts are as natural as they come.  Made from Birchwood, in your choice of three finishes:
  1. A natural, untouched finish - The collapsible ‘branches’ are tied together with twine and both clamps & screws are also made of Birch, completing the ‘true to nature’ aspect of this swift.
  2. A natural oiled finish with complementary metal hardware adding durability.  The collapsible ‘branches’ are tied together with cord and the metal screws feature a brass-look stopper on the end that add to the overall visual appeal and also serve the practical purpose of preventing scratches when clamping the swift onto a table.  Easily clamps onto any table or surface up to 1½” thick.
  3. A black onyx finish with complementary metal hardware adding durability.  The smooth black satin finish brings class and sophistication to the natural Birchwood.  The collapsible ‘branches’ are tied together with cord and both of the matching black metal screws feature brass-look stoppers on the end that add to the overall visual appeal and also serve the practical purpose of preventing scratches when clamping the swift onto a table.  Easily clamps onto any table or surface up to 1½” thick.

Functional and decorative, Birchwood Swifts are a pleasure to look at and use.

How to Use a Swift:  Simply clamp the swift onto a table or counter top to start winding yarn neatly and easily. Starting with the umbrella in the down position, place the open loop of the hank over the swift and pull it lightly so the far side of the hank is against the center of the umbrella. Then, use your free hand to slide the umbrella clamp up and open the umbrella to snugly fit the circumference of the hank. Finally, secure the umbrella clamp in place and then wind away!

Yarn Bowls, Yarn Caddies & Nostepinnes

Now that you’ve turned your skein into a ‘cake’ or ‘centre pull ball’, a Yarn Caddy (also called a Yarn Butler, Yarn Spindle or Yarn Dispenser) will keep your yarn safe & sound!  Place the centre pull ball onto the caddy and pull from the outside of the ball.  Watch as your yarn releases; tangle free and at just the right tension!  Easily pops into your project bag too.

Nostepinnes are tools used to wind centre-pull balls of yarn by hand. They require a bit of practice, but in no time you'll be winding perfect balls of yarn that don't collapse in the centre while you're knitting!

Here is our selection of Yarn Caddies and Nostepinnes:

Moosehill Woodworks
Moosehill Woodworks is dedicated to creating high quality tools from native Canadian hardwoods, for knitters, crocheters and fibre artists.  Our products are designed to last, with a tactual and aesthetic appeal that enhances enjoyment and engagement with knitting, crocheting and spinning activities.  Each product is handcrafted from unique hardwoods.  Top quality design and workmanship are guaranteed.  MADE IN CANADA

Moosehill Yarn Caddy:    These unique holders are created using a variety of native Canadian hardwoods, to enhance your knitting & crocheting enjoyment. Knitters and crocheters find them a delight to use as it keeps yarn handy and tangle free.  Spinners use them as an alternate spindle or lazy susan.

Moosehill Nostepinne: A portable yarn winder for use when travelling or attending a workshop. Also handy for winding an inside or outside pull ball from a skein or leftover yarn. A convenient way to store yarn or transfer ball to a spindle.

Yarn Valet Yarn Caddy
We love smooth tension! Sitting to the side of the Stitcher (aka Knitter or Crocheter), the Yarn Dispenser “twirls” the ball and lets the yarn release at just the perfect tension. Additional features include a 4 in/cm gauge ruler, stitch marker holders and a pattern holder slot, just for fun.

Yarn Valet Yarn Ball Winder (aka Nostepinne)
The Yarn Ball Winder is a nostepinne stick used to wind yarn into a uniform, consistent ball – it is so easy to use! Look for the secret compartment in the base that can hold anything - especially stitch markers and yarn needles that are always so easy to lose in your bag!

YARN BOWLS
Fairly self-explanatory, a yarn bowl is a decorative yet functional bowl that holds your yarn while you knit or crochet.  Yarn bowls keep your balls of yarn up off the floor and safe from ‘rolling around’.  We have a wide selection of Yarn Bowls in stock; choose from hand-made WOOD, hand-made CERAMIC, commercial-made wood or plastic styles.
