'IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS'

Monday, May 27/19 – ‘It’s the little things’

Today’s email has the theme of ‘it’s the little things that matter most’, featuring a few “little” items that may be of interest to you and fill a need that you didn’t even know was there!

Firstly, are you familiar with “The Villager Magazine”, especially the Hyde Park-Oakridge edition?  If not, here is a brief introduction:

“100% locally owned & operated, we'll continue to support local businesses, events, entrepreneurs, artists, organizations and more.

We are community passionate people to help bring the community history, businesses and energy to print. Our team supports that passion day in and day out and live up to that excellence, which can only be done if you fully understand the community.”
quoted form Villager Publications

We were privileged to have them visit us last month as they wanted to do “a little” write up about London Yarns in the Hyde Park-Oakridge edition.

If you would like to read the article entitled, “Knitting and photography:  Art forms combine to produce thoughtful, unique gifts at London Yarns”, it is found on PAGE 4, here:

Thank you Villager Magazine!!

Introducing... LITTLE NETTLE SOFT from Ancient Arts

This fabulous fingering weight yarn is made with an eco-friendly blend of fine merino and nettle, yes - NETTLE!

Nettle is a highly sustainable low impact plant fibre resulting in a yarn that is warm in winter but breathes in summer.  It gives this yarn stunning lustre, drape, and great stitch definition, and adds a lovely contrast to hand dyed colours as it takes the dye in a different way than animal fibres do, thus creating a ‘heathered effect’ to the yarn.

We have brought in a ‘little’ sampling of Little Nettle Soft to begin with and gauge the response.
Hence – the more favourably received, the wider the selection may become (wink).

Little Nettle Soft - Fingering / Sock
68% Superwash Merino Wool / 32% Nettle Fibre
350 meters / 385 yards per 100 gram / 3.5 oz skein
Gauge:  27 - 32 sts / 4 inches (10 cm)  US 1.5 - 3 or 2.5 - 3.25 mm

Did you know...Little Nettle Soft is an all-natural, durable sock yarn?

That’s right; Little Nettle Soft is a durable sock yarn that contains NO synthetic fibres at all!  The nettle provides durability to the yarn in the same way that nylon usually does.

Consider this:  Socks have been knit for centuries before the addition of nylon to the yarn.  So it’s clear that there are other, more eco-friendly alternatives to producing a durable sock yarn – like Nettle, for example.

So, come on in to the shop and check out this newest addition to our ‘sock yarn’ selection.  And, please keep in mind that this durable, 100% natural fibre yarn is also a great choice for all kinds of light-weight projects like shawls, hats, cowls, accessories, etc.

“ALASKA” FAIRISLE HAT – Learn the “Two-Handed Fairisle” Knitting Technique
One 3-hour Session
Cost:  $75 (yarn* & pattern included)
Dates & Times:
Saturday, June 8/19 from 10 am – 1 pm (just one seat left!)
Thursday, May 30/19 from 10 am – 1 pm (FULL)
Teacher: Janet

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!  The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.
(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; comfortable working in the round on circular or double pointed needles

REYNA SHAWL
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $60 (Includes yarn & pattern)
Date & Time:  Saturday, June 1/19 from 10 am – 12:30 pm (one seat available)
Teacher:  Janet

This Shawl is a staff favourite!  Learn to increase to form a triangle, practise some easy lace and relax with some garter stitch sections in between the lace.  This project is a perfect introduction to lace knitting for those of you beginner knitters who have never tried knitting lace before.  Even experienced knitters will enjoy this workshop where we create a beautiful fingering weight triangular scarf.  We start at centre back of the shawl and work down, so the finished size of the shawl is up to you – it can be a neckerchief or continue on knitting for a larger shawl to keep your shoulders warm.  The completed project can be worn year ‘round due to its lightweight nature.  Participants can expect to learn many techniques such as “yarn over/yarn forward” (yo / yfwd), “knitting through the back loop” (ktbl), and decreases such as “knit 2 together” (k2tog) and “slip, slip, knit” (ssk).   We will also learn how to work with stitch markers, work back and forth on a circular needle and read a pattern with both written instructions and a helpful chart to follow.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

Thank you for the privilege of visiting you in your inboxes each week.
