NEW YARNS, NEW COLOURS

Monday, May 6, 2019 – New Yarns, New Colours

We are showcasing two brand new yarns for you this week.  First, we have a wonderful, light weight, ‘summery’ yarn to share with you, as well as a brand new DK weight ‘sock yarn’; and also, some new colours in some familiar brands.

First up, is TRICKLE from Sugarbush Yarns.
Trickle is a fingering weight yarn that is a beautifully soft blend of 60% bamboo and 40% cotton.  The cotton provides breathability and the bamboo adds a touch of sheen and drape to your project. You will fall in love with this fine weight beauty and its silky soft touch.  Trickle is available in 10 speckled shades; five tonals and five multicoloured.  Whether is it being used to knit or crochet a project, Sugar Bush hopes that you will enjoy the luxurious feel of ‘Trickle’ in your hands.

TRICKLE by Sugarbush Yarns

Sugarbush has also added seven fashionable, light weight garment and accessory patterns to accompany the launch of ‘Trickle’.   These patterns are available to purchase & download on Ravelry.  And, as always, we are happy to do that for you at the store.

And, then we have...COTTON ON

Cotton On is a Double Knitting weight yarn made of a brilliant mix of cotton and acrylic, which ensures your garments & accessories will stay super soft and in shape throughout their lifespan despite being in and out of the wash!

Cotton On’s 50/50 blend creates a fabric that drapes beautifully while keeping its shape.  A fantastic choice for lightweight projects such as summer tops, summer cowls & shawls, year ’round cardi’s and baby garments, blankets, and accessories. James C. Brett’s “Cotton On” Double Knitting yarn is machine washable, making it an easy care yarn.  We have an expanded colour range now in stock.

Teacher: Janet

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!  The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.
(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; comfortable working in the round on circular or double pointed needles

Sock knitting has dominated the knitting world for the past several years and will continue to do so for many years to come.  Don’t be afraid to dive into your first pair of socks!  We will guide you through every step of the way from casting on and knitting the leg, completing your heel flap, turning the heel, knitting the foot and grafting the toe.  Soon you will be turning heels and tapering toes like a pro!  Warning:  Knitting socks is highly contagious!  Once you start, you can’t stop.  You simply can’t just make one! (pair, that is).

LEARN TO USE THE NEW TOOLS FOR THE LK150!
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $55 (includes yarn)
Date & Time:  Saturday, May 11/19 from 2 pm – 4:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

Recently, new tools and accessories became available for the LK150 Knitting Machine.  Many of you have already purchased the new transfer tools consisting of a 5-prong, a 7-prong, and the 4-prong “Every Other Needle” Tool.  As well, Garter Bars became available in both a “Mini” Bar and a full Garter Bar to accommodate the entire needle bed.  Join Janet to work “hands-on” with these new tools, making a sampler swatch with the different transfer tools, and more importantly, practising with the Garter Bar while learning how to use it properly.  The Garter Bar has many, many uses (not just for Garter Stitch!) and we will cover these many uses during this session.
Rated:  All Machine Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Own an LK150 Knitting Machine, the new transfer tools and a Mini Garter Bar (to be brought to class).

NEW CLASS
THE PINCHA SHAWL
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $65 (includes pattern, yarn & Jen’s ‘Coles Notes’)
Date & Time:
Option 1:  Friday, May 17/19 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Option 2:  Saturday, May 25/19 from 2 pm – 4:30 pm
Teacher: Jen

Come defy gravity and Pincha with Jen!

The “Pincha pose” or “Pincha Mayurasana” pose in yoga, also called the Feathered Peacock Pose, is an upside-down balance move on your forearms, feet pointing up to the sky. For this shawl class, we will keep our feet firmly planted on the floor while we knit a feathered peacock shawl or shawlette! This shawl is knit completely in garter stitch, with short rows making each of the “feathers” along one edge, and a simple stepped cast off creating the curve along the other edge. Knit as much or as little as you want, to make a small collar-sized shawlette or use your entire skein to make a squishy, cosy shawl to wrap around your neck. Using hand-dyed Zen Yarn Garden yarn will make this shawl “pop” and you’ll get compliments every time you wear it!

Special skeins of Zen have been carefully selected by Jen to play nicely with this pattern. In the class, we will learn how to choose our own skeins of yarn to maximize the feather effect of the shawl.

Skills learned: German short rows, the cable cast on at the beginning/end of a row, how to create a smooth line when casting off across multiple rows.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  comfortable reading a pattern, comfortable with the knit stitch, and have a general understanding of short rows (how they contribute depth to knitting without increasing stitch count).

PROVISIONAL CAST-ON
(The perfect start for the perfect ending!)
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $50
Date & Time:  Tuesday, May 7/19 from 1 pm – 3:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

It seems that of late many knitting patterns are asking you to begin with a “Provisional Cast-On”.  Some patterns offer it as a suggestion or option, but what is it?  I’m glad you asked!  A Provisional Cast-On is a method of casting on where the stitches that you start with are left “live” so that you can collect them later.  This method of cast-on comes in very handy and useful for many knitted projects including scarves, cowls, hems, afghan blocks or strips as well as neckline openings.  Use it any time in knitting where it would be nice to “finish where you started” without the bulk of having to sew the 2 pieces together.  Please join Janet to learn and practice this invaluable knitting technique.  Although there are many ways to achieve the Provisional Cast-On, we are going to learn the Crochet Cast-On method in this workshop.  You do not need to know how to Crochet to take this class.  By casting on with this method, you can later collect the live stitches to join your work.  This lends itself very nicely when Grafting/Kitchener Stitch or a 3-Needle Cast-Off/Bind-Off is used to join the knitting together.  It is also a beautiful way to join a hem, either plain or picot, with no sewing and no worrying about lining up your stitches.  The cast-on that we learn is also useful even if you don’t use it provisionally. The resulting edge looks exactly the same as when we cast-off in hand knitting so one edge of your knitting will look the same as the other!  Perfect for scarves and dishcloths and many other knitted items.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

REYNA SHAWL
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $60 (Includes yarn & pattern)
Date & Time:  Saturday, June 1/19 from 10 am – 12:30 pm
Teacher:  Janet

This Shawl is a staff favourite!  Learn to increase to form a triangle, practise some easy lace and relax with some garter stitch sections in between the lace.  This project is a perfect introduction to lace knitting for those of you beginner knitters who have never tried knitting lace before.  Even experienced knitters will enjoy this workshop where we create a beautiful fingering weight triangular scarf.  We start at centre back of the shawl and work down, so the finished size of the shawl is up to you – it can be a neckerchief or continue on knitting for a larger shawl to keep your shoulders warm.  The completed project can be worn year ‘round due to its lightweight nature.  Participants can expect to learn many techniques such as “yarn over/yarn forward” (yo / yfwd), “knitting through the back loop” (ktbl), and decreases such as “knit 2 together” (k2tog) and “slip, slip, knit” (ssk).   We will also learn how to work with stitch markers, work back and forth on a circular needle and read a pattern with both written instructions and a helpful chart to follow.
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches

Until next week,
Patti-Ann
