“ALASKA” FAIRISLE HAT – Learn the “Two-Handed Fairisle” Knitting Technique
One 3-hour Session
Cost:  $75 (yarn* & pattern included)
Dates & Times:
Thursday, May 30/19 from 10 am – 1 pm (new date)
Friday, May 10/19 from 10 am – 1 pm
(1 space available)
Thursday, May 2/19 from 10 am – 1 pm (FULL)
Teacher: Janet

This is the perfect time of year to knit this beautiful Fair Isle hat!  Join Janet to learn the “Two-Handed Fair Isle" method of knitting colourwork.  Unlike stranded Fair Isle knitting, the Two-Handed Method automatically eliminates any floats from occurring on the wrong side of the fabric!  This is accomplished as the colour not in use is magically woven in with the colour that is in use.  Here is the best part….. Your 2 yarns NEVER GET TANGLED UP!  Once you have learned the 3 simple steps to this technique, you can use the Two-Handed Fair Isle method on anything Fair Isle; sweaters, yokes, shawls, wraps, cowls, scarves, mittens, hats, you name it!  The Alaska hat is knit in 2 colours of 4-ply Fingering or “Sock” Weight yarn.  Choose from two solids or a combination of solids, tonals, or self-patterning yarns.  Knitting this hat is very rhythmic and is a nice project that is light in your hands.  The pattern will be provided digitally via email and a working copy will be printed and provided for use during class.
(* depending on yarn choice, you may have enough yarn to complete two hats, by reversing the colours for the second hat)
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; comfortable working in the round on circular or double pointed needles

Sock knitting has dominated the knitting world for the past several years and will continue to do so for many years to come.  Don’t be afraid to dive into your first pair of socks!  We will guide you through every step of the way from casting on and knitting the leg, completing your heel flap, turning the heel, knitting the foot and grafting the toe.  Soon you will be turning heels and tapering toes like a pro!  Warning:  Knitting socks is highly contagious!  Once you start, you can’t stop.  You simply can’t just make one! Recently, new tools and accessories became available for the LK150 Knitting Machine.  Many of you have already purchased the new transfer tools consisting of a 5-prong, a 7-prong, and the 4-prong “Every Other Needle” Tool.  As well, Garter Bars became available in both a “Mini” Bar and a full Garter Bar to accommodate the entire needle bed.  Join Janet to work “hands-on” with these new tools, making a sampler swatch with the different transfer tools, and more importantly, practising with the Garter Bar while learning how to use it properly.  The Garter Bar has many, many uses (not just for Garter Stitch!) and we will cover these many uses during this session.
Rated:  All Machine Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Own an LK150 Knitting Machine, the new transfer tools and a Mini Garter Bar (to be brought to class).

PROVISIONAL CAST-ON
(The perfect start for the perfect ending!)
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $50
Date & Time:  Tuesday, May 7/19 from 1 pm – 3:30 pm
Teacher: Janet

It seems that of late many knitting patterns are asking you to begin with a “Provisional Cast-On”.  Some patterns offer it as a suggestion or option, but what is it?  I’m glad you asked!  A Provisional Cast-On is a method of casting on where the stitches that you start with are left “live” so that you can collect them later.  This method of cast-on comes in very handy and useful for many knitted projects including scarves, cowls, hems, afghan blocks or strips as well as neckline openings.  Use it any time in knitting where it would be nice to “finish where you started” without the bulk of having to sew the 2 pieces together.  Please join Janet to learn and practice this invaluable knitting technique.  Although there are many ways to achieve the Provisional Cast-On, we are going to learn the Crochet Cast-On method in this workshop.  You do not need to know how to Crochet to take this class.  By casting on with this method, you can later collect the live stitches to join your work.  This lends itself very nicely when Grafting/Kitchener Stitch or a 3-Needle Cast-Off/Bind-Off is used to join the knitting together.  It is also a beautiful way to join a hem, either plain or picot, with no sewing and no worrying about lining up your stitches.  The cast-on that we learn is also useful even if you don’t use it provisionally. The resulting edge looks exactly the same as when we cast-off in hand knitting so one edge of your knitting will look the same as the other!  Perfect for scarves and dishcloths and many other knitted items.

Join me, Janet, for this 7-session workshop and take your knitting to the next level!  Both beginners and seasoned knitters will benefit from and enjoy this workshop.  This throw is comprised of 14 different squares; each one unique and fun to knit.  Remember, I always say in knitting, “if you can knit and purl, you can do anything”, and this throw proves my point!  Each square is knit separately which makes it light in your hand and lap, but the stitches are kept “live” at both the top and bottom of each square.  These live stitches make finishing the throw a breeze as ALL OF YOUR SQUARES WILL BE KNIT TOGETHER including the borders eliminating any and all hand sewing! This method of constructing each square will allow you to arrange, organize and experiment with different placement options as you work through the throw.  The many techniques featured in this throw will give each student various new skill sets to add to their knitting repertoire that will definitely be useful in many future projects.  Students can expect to learn several new stitches and all of the “helpful hints” or “tricks of the trade” that go along with them.  So many times, knitters encounter knitting instructions that assume you know the “unwritten rule” that accompanies the technique at hand.  We will solve all of these mysteries together!

Hope the rest of your day is wonderful!
