COUNTING, CLASSES, CLUBS & MARKERS

Monday, December 17/18 –  Counting, Classes, Clubs & Markers
We are very excited to bring you this weeks’ email.  We have two new company’s products to introduce you to, as well as some new Classes, Workshops & Machine Knitters Clubs.  Please enjoy reading, and if you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call or drop into the store to see us.

Can you relate?!?!

Have you ever come across a pattern instruction which begins with the four worst words in knitting – "AND AT THE SAME TIME"?  Well, SIRKA to the rescue!!

Introducing the Sirka Counter!  An innovative new product – a row counter that multitasks!  Keep track of up to three separate counts all AT THE SAME TIME.  You don't even have to remember when to stop counting! The Sirka® counter does that for you too.

The Sirka® Counter's moving clock face gives you three ways to track your rows, pattern repeats, increases, decreases, buttonholes, stitch patterns, etc.
  • Made, designed and assembled in the U.S.A.
  • The Sirka® Counter is made of durable materials (a plastic known as "ABS" and stainless steel) with an interior spring mechanism.
  • Measures approximately 4 ¼” long x 3 1/8” wide x 7/8” deep.
  • Offered in four eye-catching colors!

Sirka Colourways:
  1. BIRD – yellow/turquoise/grey
  2. DOLPHIN – purple/turquoise/grey
  3. RAINBOW SET – #1 is red/orange/yellow; #2 is blue/purple/turquoise

How to Use the Sirka Counter:
To use the Sirka, you assign one task to each of the different coloured hands on the clock face, and then use the matching coloured “crowns” beneath the face to count.  When the crown meets the hands, then that tells you when you’ve gotten to your intended stopping place.

If you prefer to wear your counter on a necklace or pinned to your shirt, choose the Sirka Counter “LP which is designed to be worn on the body (like a nurse’s lapel watch) so that the numbers are readable from above.

Want to protect your wonderful new, multi-tasking Counter?  Sirka has specially designed Bento Boxes that are available to purchase separately.

BENTO BOX – A protective, form fitting Sirka carrying case for easy storage in your project bag.

The Sirka Bento Box is designed to protect your Sirka counter in style. Shaped like a Japanese lunchbox, the Sirka Bento Box consists of a base, a lid, a protective piece of felt and a fabric elastic band. Simply place your counter (dial side up!) inside the base, center the felt shape over the dial, place the lid on top, and secure the lid to the base with the elastic band. Ridges on either side of the lid keep the elastic band in place.

The Bento Box for the Sirka Counter is available in four beautiful colourways so you can match your Bento Box to your Sirka® Counter.  Or, if you’re not a ‘matchy, matchy’ person, then simply just choose your favourite colour.  Perfection!

(Please note:  The Bento Box is sold separately and does not contain a Sirka Counter.)

Bento Box colour choices are:
  • Yellow (matches ‘Bird’ Sirka Counter)
  • Turquoise (matches the ‘Dolphin’ Sirka Counter)
  • Red (matches ‘Rainbow 1’ Sirka Counter)
  • Purple (matches ‘Rainbow 2’ Sirka Counter)

Be sure to come by the shop
and take a closer look at this fascinating new gadget.
How did this little ‘Sirka’ gadget come about?

The Making of Sirka:
One day, feeling more than a little impatient, we thought, ‘wouldn't it be great to have a gadget that counted more than one number’?  For example, the instructions "Decrease every 6 (6, 7, 8) rows 2 (3, 4, 5) more times", has two numbers to count, and then what happens when you get to the buttonholes, the instruction for which begins with the four worst words in knitting – "AT THE SAME TIME"?

We wanted a counter that could multitask. We wanted it to count more than one thing, AT THE SAME TIME, and we wanted it to tell us when to stop because we always forget that, too. We didn't want our counter to be ridiculously complicated, of course, but we did want it to be attractive. Beauty is knitting, knitting beauty. That is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know!

When we'd made a list of things we wanted our counter to be, we asked ourselves, how hard can it be? Never ask that question.

After spending months on design, we made about a hundred prototypes, then gave piles of money to a couple of manufacturers here in Omaha, Nebraska, who gave us, in return, cardboard boxes stuffed with thousands of plastic parts. Exhausted but euphoric, we assembled those parts ourselves, with balls and springs and screws and, of course, love.

And that's how the Sirka® counter was born! Happy knitting! – taken from Sirka’s ‘About Us’ page

Introducing, our second new Company…

A note from the Owner:
‘After years of experience with so many stitch markers that fell apart or snagged my precious yarns, I decided to make my own. I wanted something of real quality and beauty, made with my own hands.

THIS CLASS IS PERFECT FOR ALL BEGINNER KNITTERS & THOSE THAT WANT TO IMPROVE UPON THEIR KNITTING SKILLS

Lately we have had loads of requests to do a workshop on fixing mistakes. Well here it is! This hands-on class will not only teach you how to deal with all kinds of “knitting disasters” like dropped and twisted stitches and un-picking one or many rows, but will also deal with things like; “how do I know what row of my pattern I’m on” and “Oh-No! All of the stitches fell off of my needle! What do I do? And “Oh-No! The phone rang, I set down my knitting and now I don’t know how to start up again! So often customers tell us that they unravelled all of their knitting and started over simply because they didn’t have the skills to fix their mistake; Oh My! Never again after this workshop! Simply put, all beginner knitters can benefit from taking this class.

This class will give you a chance to work with a bulky weight yarn that knits up quickly and at the same time, add to your knitting skills repertoire!  This Cabled Cowl class is suitable for all knitters, from beginners who know how to knit & purl to the experienced who want to brush up on their cable skills (i.e. How to prevent “that gap” at the cable crossings).  And, you may choose if you prefer to knit the pattern as a cowl, or to finish it as a scarf.

During class you will learn how to read a pattern, do a provisional cast on, keep borders aligned, seed stitch, crossing cables both right & left, use of cable needle, markers & lifeline, and to finish your Cowl, you have the choice of mattress stitch, 3-needle cast-off or grafting.  Plus any number of other skills/techniques that may arise in class from what we affectionately call a “Teachable Moment” (i.e. picking up stitches, ripping back, fixing miss-crossed cables, etc).

Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches

ATTENTION MACHINE KNITTERS!

Back by popular demand, our Machine Knitters Club is ready to go, starting in the new year.  We are pleased to now be offering two options for membership – Hands-On in classroom and “Notes Only”.

The hands-on workshops will be offered once a month with one group meeting on Wednesday and one group meeting on Saturday.  Space for these sessions is EXTREMELY LIMITED so to be sure to register as soon as possible.

We understand that many of our vast base of machine knitters lives all over the Province as well as outside of the Province.  So, we have created the “Notes-Only Club” so machine knitters that cannot physically attend the store can still be included and benefit from our Machine Knitters Club, learning the new stitches and techniques at home.

Please see below the details to register for either of these Clubs.

Join Janet and be a part of this Club exclusive to Machine Knitters.  Due to popular demand, the Club is now being offered as “hands-on” sessions and will be offered in blocks of 6 sessions with one session being offered approximately every month starting in January and ending in June.  The Club will break for the summer months (July & August) and re-convene for four more sessions in September through to December (10 Sessions each year).

Knitters can expect to be exposed to numerous new stitches and techniques in hand manipulation, machine patterning, bindings, trims and finishing techniques.
Each square knits up quickly and easily on the LK150 knitting machine.  By the end of the sessions, students will have completed many knit squares showcasing what they have learned and it is recommended assembling them to create a beautiful throw highlighting the varying new stitches.

We are pleased to offer all participants a 15% discount when they purchase sufficient yarn from London Yarns to complete this on-going project.  Students may choose multiple colours or a solid shade throughout.

All of the stitch techniques learned can be combined and transferred to many other aspects of your knitting!   Use your newly mastered stitches (or combinations thereof) in garments, baby blankets or home décor items or to create scarves, wraps, sweater panel designs and/or afghan panels.  The possibilities are limitless!
This “get-together” for machine knitters will encourage “Show & Tell” and will be an outlet for machine knitters to share their projects, ideas, and questions.

By becoming a member, you will be entitled to attend all 6 hands-on sessions and receive all of the relevant hand-out material for each session.  After the summer break, you will be able to register for the final 4 sessions of the year (September to December).  EVEN IF you were unable to attend one of the sessions you will still receive all of the hand-out materials!

You will be knitting samples of the new stitches or techniques right in class, and should questions arise from the group, they will be addressed at the next session.
