Have you happened to noticed how many more yarn companies are now presenting their yarns to us in hanks?  A “hank” (sometimes referred to as a ‘skein’) looks like this:

In fact, if you take a tour through our shop, you will definitely find quite a few ‘hanks’ from a number of companies.  This week, in our Wednesday Sale Event, we are featuring ALL HANKS of yarn, along with the tools to wind them.

To ‘whet your appetite’ & get you planning ahead for a project or two (or three), here is a brief listing of some of the yarns, presented in HANKS, that will be discounted on Wednesday:

Ok, so now you have ‘yarn in hand’ and are eager to get started on your project... B-U-T WAIT!!

Before we can begin our exciting new project, we first have to actually WIND the hanks into a usable ball or cake.  WHY must we do this, you ask?!?!  Why can’t we just work directly from the hank?  Because, in the blink of an eye, your hank will go from this...

To this...

It’s true, some of us, though possibly very few, actually enjoy the process of ‘winding yarn the traditional way’ – that is, enlisting the help of a friend, family member or loved one to sit with you, hands held out holding the open hank of yarn, while you patiently wind metre after metre after metre of, what seems to be, endless amounts of yarn into hand-wound balls of yarn.  True, this process can contribute to some ‘quality time’ together, but from the stories we have heard, most ‘helpers’ tend to be a little reluctant and/or unenthusiastic.  So, what to do, what to do?!?!

Not to worry; we have the solution for you!!  All you need are two simple, uncomplicated pieces of equipment. What are they?  A SWIFT and a BALL WINDER.  These are a “one time investment” that will make a world of difference in your knitting or crocheting lives.  In fact, you will wonder what you ever did without them and ‘WHY ON EARTH did I wait sooooo long to get them?’ (While it is true that you can use either a ball winder or a swift independently, but ideally, they work best in tandem with each other.)

The best part is, that this
Wednesday, July 25th, all of our Swifts & Ball Winders ARE ON SALE!!  If you already of have one without the other, now is the time to complete your set!  Purchase one or the other or both and SAVE!

A BALL WINDER (also referred to as a Wool Winder) is a hand-operated yarn winder for making center-pull balls that won't roll away.  A wool winder transforms a hank into a ‘cake’, in effect going from this...

To this... in a matter of just minutes – what a HUGE time saver!!

(two photos taken from Underground Crafters Tutorial
“How to Wind Yarn with a Swift and Winder”)

We have 3 styles of Ball Winders for you to choose from:

These Ball Winders are compact and light in weight, with built-in table clamps that will work on table thickness up to approx. 6.5cm (2.6") and will create a 4 oz. center pull ball.

And 2 styles of Swifts are available:

An essential tool for any Knitter or Crocheter, the Yarn Swift holds your hanks of yarn in place as you wind them into balls.

The Plastic and Metal Swift is sturdy and lightweight and opens to 60" and has two special features. The crank at the top allows you to wind skeins of yarn and the clamp is designed to allow you to adjust the angle at which the swift is resting from vertical to horizontal for easy winding and unwinding. This swift stands 16” tall and weighs about 1 pound (454 gr). The clamp at the base allows it to be easily attached to a table edge or shelf and can pivot for use at any angle.  Also useful for measuring off warp when weaving.  Comes with a hard plastic storage box.

The Wood Swift is as natural as they come.  Made from Birchwood, with a natural finish, not lacquered.  The collapsible ‘branches’ are tied together with twine and both clamps & screws are also made of Birch, completing the ‘true to nature aspect’ of this swift.  Functional and decorative, the natural wood swift is a pleasure to look at and use.

How to Use a Swift:  Simply clamp the swift onto a table or counter top to start winding yarn neatly and easily. Starting with the umbrella in the down position, place the open loop of the hank over the swift and pull it lightly so the far side of the hank is against the center of the umbrella. Then, use your free hand to slide the umbrella clamp up and open the umbrella to snugly fit the circumference of the hank. Finally, secure the umbrella clamp in place and then wind away!

As mentioned earlier, a Swift and a Ball Winder can be used independently, but ideally they do their best work TOGETHER...
