MIGRATION

Monday, March 26/18 – Migration

Before we get into today’s email, we want to let you know our store hours over the upcoming Holiday weekend:
Friday, March 30th – Closed for Good Friday
Saturday, March 31st – OPEN 9:30 – 5:00
Sunday, April 1st – Closed for Easter Sunday
Monday, April 2nd – OPEN 9:30 – 5:00

And now onto the ‘exciting part’, as promised in last weeks email....

Living here in Southwestern Ontario, as we do, we are very privileged to witness a beautiful & rare spectacle!  During their Spring Migration from the Atlantic Coastal area to their Arctic breeding grounds, up to 60,000 Tundra Swans (formerly known as the Whistling Swan) will fly through our locale!

Quite a number of them make a ‘stop over’ in the Alymer area (amongst others) to rest & feed before the next leg of their journey northward.  This happens every year beginning in mid to late March and continues over a span of about 3-4 weeks, into early April.

Here is a link to some
Swan ‘Fun Facts’, if you care to read a little more about these majestic birds.

(photo taken on March 17th with a count of 1399 reported)

Numbers vary from day to day, but a count of up to 3000 was witnessed in Alymer in 2015!  So far this Spring, we are reporting numbers up to 1550 – on March 20th (the unusual weather patterns & temperatures seems to have somewhat affected their migration this year).  A spectacular sight to see!!

Alymer Wildlife Management Area
is one of THE best places to witness this event!

There is a nice write up here from 2015, as well as some good pictures:  http://paulroeddingphotography.com/2015/04/02/tundra-swans-touch-down-in-aylmer-ontario/

To celebrate & commemorate this annual event, as well as raise awareness for this amazing feat, we are excited to present another Knit-Along (KAL)…

MIGRATION
designed by Shireen Nadir

The Migration Shawl was “so named for the ‘flying V’ formation ... reminiscent of Canada Geese” – or in our case, the Tundra Swan.  The Migration shawl uses basic lace stitches on the right side rows, and all wrong side rows are ‘rest rows’ - just purling.  The shawl is perfect for showcasing a long run gradient yarn, gradient sets, or yarns in tonals, solids or heathers.  It blocks to a generous 50” wingspan – measuring just shy of the swans actual wingspan!!  Think of it – wearing the shawl would be like being wrapped in swan’s wings!

As our current, ongoing Mystery Knit-a-Long will be winding down and soon coming to completion, we have decided to offer and launch this new project as a “Knit-a-Long” of sorts, but certainly not a mystery!  Let’s all eagerly create this memorable keepsake to honour our fine feathered friends.  The instructions are well written, every other row is a nice break, as all wrong side rows are purled, and the only skills you need in your knitting repertoire are:

Knitting, Purling, Counting, Chart Reading, Yarn Over,
Decreasing by Knitting 2 Together or SSK,
and every once in a while, a “Pass Slipped Stitch Over” thrown in!

Please do not be intimidated by this project.  It is well suited to all knitters, and of course, we will be right here to help you out along the way.

Your Migration Shawl Kit will include:
  • Migration Shawl Pattern for knitters
  • A handmade Greeting Card from Imagine Photography, choose from one of three images of Swans in flight

  • Janet’s ‘Coles Notes & Helpful Hints’ for knitting the Migration Shawl
  • KAL cost is $14.98 plus yarn purchased at London Yarns – your choice of Fingering or sport/DK Weight
  • 4.5mm needles are needed for this project, but not included

For the Migration Shawl KAL, as mentioned you will need 4.5 mm knitting needles & also a minimum of 550 mtrs of either a Fingering or Sport/DK weight yarn.  This shawl would look AMAZING in Zen Gradients (Janet knit her Migration Shawl with them), or Katia Ombre (gradient set pack).  Choose from any of our in stock yarns; here are just a few suggestions (solids, heathers, tonals or multi’s):

Fingering Weights:
  • Any Sock Yarns, including Opal, Poems, etc.
  • Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine
  • Louet Gems
  • Tahiti
  • Zen’s hand-dyed yarns

Sport/DK Weights:
  • Berroco Millefiori Light
  • Berroco Ultra Wool
  • Cascade 220 Sport
  • Comfort DK
  • Louet Gems Sport
  • Radiant Cotton
  • Vintage DK

Choose from a wide selection of brands & fibres; pick any yarn that fits your budget (projects costs start at as little as $19.98!) and come and enjoy this KAL with us.  Come in or call in to register & choose your yarn and be ready to go for when the pattern and ‘Coles Notes’ are sent out in the first week of April.

Personally, I’m itching to give it a try in a lace weight – eg. Sugarbush Drizzle (Mmmmmm mohair & silk) or perhaps Traum Seide (100% mulberry silk) … how gorgeous would that be?!?!

SPRING MIGRATION – March 2018

On an entirely different subject...

The TRIBBLES are multiplying!!!

Jen opened up a Mailer envelope and got an unexpected surprise!!  Looked what jumped out at her…

A brand new shipment of Faux Fur Pompoms – HANDMADE (in Canada!) in LIMITED EDITION colours!!!  These colours are a ‘one time only – limited supply’ shipment.  Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.  Four limited edition colours (in assorted sizes, with ties) are in stock & available (as well as all our current colours):

The Grey Wolf is sooooo soft – it feels like bunny fur!!

So, with all the excitement in today’s email, why not ‘migrate’ over to our shop & join in the delight of the Swan’s Spring Migration of 2018!

Patti-Ann

PS.  If you would like to see a few more pictures of the swans, taken in Alymer last Saturday, here are the links:
