YARN REVIEW – PART 3, PLUS PATTERNS

Monday, January 22/18 – Yarn Review – Part 3, plus patterns

Today, we review three more yarns that have recently come in – ALL are machine washable, two in a synthetic and the other is a pure Egyptian cotton – yum!  And, this week, we have included some pattern inspiration, to hopefully motivate you to put your knitting & crocheting skills to use along with these new yarns.

A recent addition to our Sock Yarn Wall is COMFORT SOCK by Berroco – an economical, wool-free fingering weight, ‘sock yarn’ that is also well-suited for baby items & shawls!  Available in both solids & self-striping colourways, Comfort Sock is made from a wonderfully soft blend of superfine acrylic & nylon, making it not only easy care (machine washable) but this blend ensures that your non-wool socks will keep their shape!  A perfect yarn for all those who don’t prefer or cannot wear wool.  One ball makes one pair of average size socks.

LOVELY NEW EGYPTIAN COTTON YARN….

Here is a very good write-up about Radiant Cotton, by Charles Voth:

‘Aptly named Fibra Natura Radiant Cotton is a 100% Egyptian cotton yarn with a lovely, gentle sheen. Its DK weight makes it a versatile choice for lots of different projects, from drapy sweaters and cardigans to lacy shawls that take the chill out of a cool summer's evening. Cotton is ideal for warmer-weather garments, or for those who are sensitive to animal fibers.

This cotton yarn is made 100% of cotton grown in Egypt and processed in Turkey.  Egyptian cotton has a very long staple and its own natural sheen. It absorbs color extremely well compared to some other cottons. Another key aspect about the integrity of this cotton is that it is hand-picked rather than machine harvested, which keeps the fibers sturdy. When spun for hand-knitting, Egyptian cotton keeps its famous softness and sheen at the same time. Four individually spun plies of the cotton fibers are spun together to make Radiant Cotton.’ – quoted from https://knitmuch.com/knitting-with-radiant-cotton-by-fibra-natura/

Available in 24 splendidly ‘radiant’ shades:

Many of you have already been in to admire this fabulous new afghan created by local designers Gladys & Christy of GC Designs from Sarnia, Ontario.  Join Janet to get started & successfully accomplish this heirloom afghan – the perfect project to kick off the New Year!  Through the series of sessions, students can expect to learn literally dozens of knitting stitches & techniques.  Special attention will be given to starting and ending each block and/or strip in such a way so as to make finishing a breeze and minimize seaming as much as possible.

Learn professional techniques in adapting the knitting process to properly prepare your knitted pieces that result in beautiful seaming & finishing.  These will include, but are not be limited to, provisional cast on, provisional cast off, proper use of waste yarn, reading & accomplishing over 50 stitches and their abbreviations, minimizing the number of pieces to assemble, knitting top down, bottom up, as well as multi directional borders, use of lifelines, 3-needle cast off & mattress stitch.

All students will learn to "read between the lines" of their patterns and feel empowered to make these changes knowing that you will achieve a professional overall finish to your afghan.
By working through this process & building these skills you will be equipped with the confidence to apply these techniques in many future projects.

Joining our group for these sessions will be a perfect way to keep you motivated and forging ahead to complete what is sure to become a treasured work of art.  Finished afghan size is approximately 56” x 80”.

CABLED COWL or SCARF
One 3-hour Sessions
Cost:  $40 (includes yarn & pattern)
Date & Time:  Tuesday, January 23/18 from 1 pm – 4 pm
Teacher: Louise

This class will give you a chance to work with a bulky weight yarn that knits up quickly and at the same time, add to your knitting skills repertoire!  The Cabled Cowl or Scarf class is suitable for all knitters, from beginners who know how to knit & purl to the experienced who want to brush up on their cable skills (i.e. How to prevent “that gap” at the cable crossings)  And you may choose if you prefer to knit the pattern as a cowl, or to finish it as a scarf.

During class you will learn how to read a pattern, do a provisional cast on (or crochet cast on, if you are knitting the Scarf), keep borders aligned, seed stitch, crossing cables both right & left, use of cable needle, markers & lifeline, and to finish your Cowl, you have the choice of mattress stitch, 3-needle cast-off or grafting.  Plus any number of other skills/techniques that may arise in class from what we affectionately call a “Teachable Moment” (i.e. picking up stitches, ripping back, fixing miss-crossed cables, etc).

BRAND NEW DEMONSTRATION SESSION...

EXCITING TOOLS for LK150 KNITTERS
One 1-hour Session
Cost:  FREE – but please call to register, as space is limited.
Dates & Times:
Tuesday, January 30/18 from 1 pm – 2pm
OR
Saturday, February 3/18 from 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Demonstrator:  Janet

Please join Janet for a free demonstration using these exciting tools that are newly available for your LK150 Knitting Machine.

The new tools include a 5-prong, a 7-prong and a 4-every-other-prong Transfer Tool, a “mini” 20-prong Garter Bar and a Full Size (2 x 75-prong) Garter Bar Set.

A Garter Bar can prove to be invaluable for a Machine Knitter!  Here’s why…
Garter Stitch is a very common & useful stitch (e.g. It does not curl, but lays flat & is a ‘go to’ stitch for trims, cuffs, borders, etc)  B-U-T because of how labour intensive Garter Stitch tends to be on the LK150, Machine Knitters are often likely  to avoid it – how sad!  Well, here’s the answer – a Garter Bar!

A Garter Bar allows you to flip your work from Right Side to Wrong Side and back again, allowing you to knit garter stitch rows and/or garter stitch ridges with no waste yarn and no re-hanging stitches from waste yarn – what a time saver!!

Although garter stitch is the Garter Bar’s “claim to fame”, it also has many other uses, like:
  • Removing & holding an entire piece of knitting, just like giant stitch holder, keeping your stitches live & protected (this is an especially beneficial feature if you have a ‘helpful’ kitten at your feet – just ask Janet!)
  • Transferring multiple eyelet stitches, all at the same time
  • Crossing multiple cables, all at the same time
  • Moving large banks of stitches when shaping – e.g. at the top of a hat, gussets, pleats, darts, etc.
  • Think of the Garter Bar as having one Transfer Tool with as many prongs as are needed for your projects (up to & including 150-prongs!!)
…just to name a few uses.

These tools are Special Order items.  You can place your pre-paid order at any time or when attending one of the demonstrations.  If you are unable to attend one of the free demonstrations, please feel free to call for further details & pricing.

This pattern has been taking the knitting world by storm… again.  Originally published in 1968 the “BSJ”, as it is fondly referred to, has made yet another comeback.  The design is ingenious, one piece of knitting with increases and decreases throughout and then folded just the right way, and taa daa…. A cute-as-can-be baby jacket complete with sleeves, front, back and button band.  We have sold so many of these patterns that we felt a knit-along workshop was in order to help those of you who just may need a little motivation to get started…. And finished!

Would you like to improve your hand knitting skills and have a gorgeous sampler afghan to show for it?  Louise will help you on your way with this “Customer Favourite” educational class.  Each session we will work on two different blocks while focusing on expanding our knitting knowledge.  Start with the simple knit & purl stitch squares and then watch your confidence grow as you master the techniques of each square with advancing difficulty.  We will be covering skills such as pattern reading, pattern abbreviations, gauge, pattern appropriate increase & decrease techniques, lifelines, lace work, cable knitting, reading charts and, of course, methods of casting on & off.  By the end of session 5 we will be ready to finish an afghan that is approximately 36” x 48” and decide on your favourite border option.
