TWO ‘STAPLES’ & A DESSERT

Monday, January 15/18 – Two ‘staples’ & a Dessert

Welcome to the ‘Yarn Review – Part 2’.  This week’s email will continue to review yarns that are warming our shelves, while awaiting your inspiration to become something spectacular!

These first two yarns are definite ‘staples’ in anyone’s ‘yarn diet’, or to coin Janet’s expression, these are “bread & butter” yarns.  Both are soft to the touch & machine washable; one is wool-free, the other has just enough wool content to add extra warmth and breathability to your project.  And, so, here they are:

Comfort DK by Berroco has returned to our shop.  After a long hiatus, this well-known, well-loved & often requested yarn is back in stock … YEAH!!  Comfort DK combines economy, quality and performance in a super fine blend of acrylic and nylon is perfect for baby, tots, toddlers and adults alike. A selection of more sophisticated shades makes it an excellent non-woolen alternative for the lace knitter.

COMFORT DK
Yardage:  165 mtrs / 178 yds / 50 grams
Tension:  22-24 sts = 4" (10 cm)
Suggested Knitting Needle:  3.75mm - 4 mm, US 5 - 6
Fibre Content:  50% Superfine Acrylic, 50% Superfine Nylon
Care:  Machine Wash Gentle, Tumble Dry Low

Vintage DK by Berroco will quickly become your go-to yarn for any double knitting weight project!  An incredibly soft, affordable, easy to launder blend of acrylic, wool and nylon with abundant yardage that goes on and on.  Available in a gorgeous colour range of both solids & heathers.  Perfect for DK weight socks, colourwork, and every day wearable garments & accessories for the whole family.

VINTAGE DK
Yardage:  265 mtrs / 290 yds / 100 grams
Tension:  22 sts = 4" (10 cm)
Suggested Knitting Needle:  4 mm, US 6
Fibre Content:  52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon
Care:  Machine Wash Cold Gentle, Flat Dry
Made in Peru

If Comfort DK & Vintage DK are the ‘bread & butter’, than Millefiori Light is our dessert!

Millefiori Light is new from Berroco!   ‘Millefiori’ is an Italian glasswork technique producing distinctive decorative patterns of which Berroco has transformed into yarn-y bliss for us!  Made from an equal blend of wool and acrylic, giving the yarn both stability and softness.  The glowing palette of marled and variegated colourways, both ebb and flow in random patterns to create a moderate & gentle, multicoloured fabric with just a hint of shine.  This yarn is spun as a single-ply in a double knitting weight.  Millefiori Light begs to be knit up into eye catching hats, mitts, scarves & shawls, cowls, sweaters and more!

MILLEFIORI LIGHT by Berroco
Yardage: 320 mtrs / 350 yds / 100 grams
Tension:  22 - 24 sts = 4" (10 cm)
Suggested Knitting Needle:  3.75 mm – 4 mm, US 5 - 6
Fibre Content:  50% Wool, 50% Acrylic
Care:  Hand Wash, Flat Dry

We still have a few seats open in these classes.  If you can come, please call the store to register, along with your payment information.  We do hope you can join us!

Many of you have already been in to admire this fabulous new afghan created by local designers Gladys & Christy of GC Designs from Sarnia, Ontario.  Join Janet to get started & successfully accomplish this heirloom afghan – the perfect project to kick off the New Year!  Through the series of sessions, students can expect to learn literally dozens of knitting stitches & techniques.  Special attention will be given to starting and ending each block and/or strip in such a way so as to make finishing a breeze and minimize seaming as much as possible.

Learn professional techniques in adapting the knitting process to properly prepare your knitted pieces that result in beautiful seaming & finishing.  These will include, but are not be limited to, provisional cast on, provisional cast off, proper use of waste yarn, reading & accomplishing over 50 stitches and their abbreviations, minimizing the number of pieces to assemble, knitting top down, bottom up, as well as multi directional borders, use of lifelines, 3-needle cast off & mattress stitch.

All students will learn to "read between the lines" of their patterns and feel empowered to make these changes knowing that you will achieve a professional overall finish to your afghan.
By working through this process & building these skills you will be equipped with the confidence to apply these techniques in many future projects.

Joining our group for these sessions will be a perfect way to keep you motivated and forging ahead to complete what is sure to become a treasured work of art.  Finished afghan size is approximately 56” x 80”.

CABLED COWL or SCARF
One 3-hour Sessions
Cost:  $40 (includes yarn & pattern)
Date & Time:  Tuesday, January 23/18 from 1 pm – 4 pm
Teacher: Louise

This class will give you a chance to work with a bulky weight yarn that knits up quickly and at the same time, add to your knitting skills repertoire!  The Cabled Cowl or Scarf class is suitable for all knitters, from beginners who know how to knit & purl to the experienced who want to brush up on their cable skills (i.e. How to prevent “that gap” at the cable crossings)  And you may choose if you prefer to knit the pattern as a cowl, or to finish it as a scarf.

During class you will learn how to read a pattern, do a provisional cast on (or crochet cast on, if you are knitting the Scarf), keep borders aligned, seed stitch, crossing cables both right & left, use of cable needle, markers & lifeline, and to finish your Cowl, you have the choice of mattress stitch, 3-needle cast-off or grafting.  Plus any number of other skills/techniques that may arise in class from what we affectionately call a “Teachable Moment” (i.e. picking up stitches, ripping back, fixing miss-crossed cables, etc).
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite:  Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches

OOPS! I MADE A MISTAKE – For Beginners
One 2.5-hour Session
Cost:  $35.00
Date & Time:  Saturday, January 20/18 from 10 am – 1 pm
Teacher:  Louise

THIS CLASS IS PERFECT FOR ALL BEGINNER & EXPERIENCED KNITTERS ALIKE!
Lately we have had loads of requests to do a workshop on fixing mistakes. Well here it is! This hands-on class will not only teach you how to deal with all kinds of “knitting disasters” like dropped and twisted stitches and un-picking one or many rows, but will also deal with things like; “how do I know what row of my pattern I’m on” and “Oh-No! All of the stitches fell off of my needle! What do I do? And “Oh-No! The phone rang, I set down my knitting and now I don’t know how to start up again! So often customers tell us that they unravelled all of their knitting and started over simply because they didn’t have the skills to fix their mistake; Oh My! Never again after this workshop! Simply put, all beginner knitters can benefit from taking this class.
Rated: All Knitters
Pre-Requisite: Knowledge of Knit & Purl Stitches
