Monday, October 23/17 – Me likey, my LYKKE!
Oh!  “I’m so excited” – I just may break out into song!!

SURPRISE!!!!  We have a BRAND NEW offering for you today – a new line of knitting needles.

But just before we proceed, we have a question for you....

Are you interested in knitting this sensational Afghan?

A CANADIAN AFGHAN, EH! project has moved to the top of the ‘to do list’ for many knitters, including some of our staff.

We are happy to let you know that we are taking orders for the yarn you wish to use, be it Tradition Worsted, Cascade 220, Briggs & Little Regal or Tuffy, Rustic with Wool Aran, With Wool Aran, Patons Classic Wool, or Bernat Supersaver; the entire afghan requires approx. 4600 mtrs / 5000 yds.

So come on in…
  1. Choose which yarn you want to work with
  2. Make your colour choice(s)
  3. Pre-pay your yarn order
  4. And, voila!  You’ll be started in no time.
Please note:  To order yarn for this afghan, you do not have to join our workshop.

And, now onto the ‘Surprise’ part of today’s email:
May we introduce you to your soon-to-be new ‘best friends’...

Named after the Norwegian word for happiness, LYKKE Crafts combine high quality materials and thoughtful design to produce beautiful, durable, happy-making knitting needles.
pronounced ‘lee-kuh’

“As for our name…We felt that we wanted to bring to market attractive crafting tools that people would really love. An inadequate tool can take the joy out of craft, but a great tool can increase creative flow and focus, helping you, as we put it, ‘make happy’. Plain and simple, enabling happiness and happy making is central to our company mission. So we set out looking for an attractive word that meant happiness to represent our brand. That was our thinking - why we searched for words of happiness. In our searching, we found that the Norwegian word for happiness was not only beautiful in a phonetic and visual sense, but, when pronounced with an english or american accent, was a near homophone of the english word ‘like’, or the informal phrase ‘likey’, as in, “me likey.” Fun, happy infused, and attractive.

That is the positive spirit in which we strive to operate and why we found ‘LYKKE’ to be a most fitting name for what we aim to do.” – Lykke Needles Statement

What makes these needles so special & different from all others on the market????  Good question!  Here is the answer:

The ‘Driftwood’ needles are made from solid birch wood (no composite or laminate wood!), sourced from the USA and are produced in India by former makers of high quality paint brushes. They are resin infused to give them their unique appearance, but also to harden the wood. We found the appearance to have a unique patina and in our brain storming of a neat name for these needles, we felt ‘Driftwood’ was the most appropriate. – Lykke Needles

We could say sooooo much about these remarkable needles, but for sake of brevity, we have summarized the main highlights into bullet format for you:
  • LYKKE needles are strong, silky smooth and light
  • made from solid birch—no composite or laminate wood
  • the solid birch needles are resin infused to give them their unique appearance, but also to harden the wood – allows for tip integrity (no fraying or splintering)
  • the striking grey finish does not compete with the colour of your yarn, but instead provides a neutral backdrop against which the colour and texture and beauty of whatever you are working with is enhanced!
  • LYKKE IC Tips & straight needles have both US and metric sizes etched on the black end caps of the needles to ensure long-term readability
  • LYKKE double pointed needles have beautiful, smooth-as-silk black metal inlay with engraved size markings in both US and metric sizes
  • the beautiful grayish finish varies with the wood grain, yet the pairs match up
  • LIFETIME WARRANTY – The manufacturer's lifetime guarantee against defects gives you the peace of mind that you have invested in tools built to last
  • needle tips have just the right sharpness – not too pointy, not too blunt with a short taper that puts your hands closer to the action
  • the ‘Driftwood’ patina has a warm, silvery, elegant appearance – aesthetically stunning!
  • the needle-to-cord joins on both the fixed circulars and the interchangeable sets are impeccably smooth which means knitting is near effortless
  • black cables are likewise smooth and flexible
  • the needle sets are highly customizable – tips & cords are sold individually or in sets across a wide range of standard sizes
  • each set is packed in your choice of a beautiful, high quality grey faux denim or black faux leather case
  • Lyyke needles are made from solid birch wood that is sourced from the USA and manufactured in India
  • great-looking, hard-working and impeccably detailed – what more could you ask for?!?

If we haven’t already said enough about these needles, here are excerpts from an informative, non-biased review of Lykke needles:

“The market for interchangeable circular needles has been well-served for years by Knitter’s Pride, ChiaoGoo, Denise, Addi, Signature, Tulip, Hiya Hiya, and Knitpicks Options. The sets have generally featured slick metals, beige bamboo, or bright colorful wood or plastic tips in solids, rainbow hues, or psychedelic color combinations.

We have a new player Lykke Crafts whose aesthetics tone all that down, replacing the techni-color with a minimalistic weathered grey styling that’s fittingly called Driftwood.

Wood You?
First things first: No, the needles aren’t actually made of driftwood. These needles are made of birch, a hardwood whose durability is on par with maple and a little shy of Indian rosewood in terms of density and bending strength.

It’s a fine choice for knitting needles because it allows for tip integrity (no fraying or splintering) while also still yielding ever so slightly in your hands, specifically among the smaller sizes.
The grey shading on the needles varies from tip to tip, giving the illusion of having been carefully rubbed and finished by hand.
The wood quickly adjusts to your body temperature, and the glossy finish doesn’t complain when it’s 90 degrees in the shade and your hands start to sweat. Yarn slides smoothly, without much friction or sticking.

Tip Talk
The needles in this kit have a quite pleasant middle-of-the-road tip that’s not pointy-pointy, nor is it dull or blunt. It is well-defined for precise stitchwork without being lethal or snaggy.  The taper is short, putting your hands closer to the action.”

What’s the Deal?
If the needles are nearly identical to many others made in India, if the cord and cable mechanism are easily found elsewhere, what makes the real difference with this kit?  This weathered grey styling is completely new for needles, and it clearly speaks to many. I thought I’d find it a little gloomy, but I soon discovered that it actually enhanced the color and texture and beauty of whatever yarn was on the needles.
