OH! WHAT F-U-N WE HAD!!

Monday, May 15, 2017 – OH! What F-U-N we had!!

And, FUN it was!!  We had a full house on Thursday for our ‘Yarn to “Dye” For’ Dyeing Class.  Janice is an excellent teacher and inspires others with ease, including those of us who felt rather reluctant and perhaps even a little intimidated (aka – ME!).  The morning class was filled to capacity, so Janet treated the staff to an afternoon class of our own...

‘THANK YOU, JANET’

Here’s a quick peek into our most enjoyable experience:

First we prepped the yarn Blanks, mixed our dyes and did ‘test swatches’ on paper towel as Janice demonstrated various application methods ...

Then we took a loooooong, hard, DEEP breath & dove in, some of us with greater ease [aka JEN], than others of us (right Sherry, wink?!?) and come to think of it...Terry & Judy seemed to show no fear either!

Once the dye application was complete, we snuggled up our newly created, no longer blank Blanks, in plastic wrap, tucked them in a little glass dish and gave our Blanks an nice, hot steam bath in the microwave ...

  • Prepped?  - check!
  • Dyed?    - check!
  • Cooked?  - check!

Now we can unwrap and see our new creations.  Here is our “TA-DAH!” moments...

EVERYONE had a very unique, distinctive design of their own.  Here is our finished art work, including some from the morning class...

On behalf of the Staff and everyone who attended Class on Thursday,
we give ‘a big shout out’ to say – “THANK YOU Janice!”
for sharing your knowledge, teaching us new skills
and inspiring us to explore our creativity.

** If you would like to do more Blank Dyeing,
we will have ready-made Sock & Shawl Blanks available for sale in the store,
made with Opal, Zen Serenity 20 or Zen Superfine Fingering yarns. **

And, just a little, additional FYI (and ‘kudos) ... remember Janice’s Maple Leaf Shawl (seen above centre)?  She shared with us the ‘full story’ of her shawl...

(the top 6 pictures are representative of the process only)

Janice started with raw, unwashed fleece, cleaned & carded the fleece, spun it into a lace weight yarn, hand knit it, blocked it and then hand dyed it!

Truly a masterful ‘work of art’!!  No wonder she won the “Creative Hand Dyeing Award” at the recent Ontario Handweavers & Spinners Conference.  CONGRATULATIONS JANICE!!

Well, that was OUR fun, now here is some fun for you!!

We’ve had a new sock yarn shipment arrive, with many styles, colours (including new SOLIDS) & patterns to choose from:

  • Regia 3-ply
  • Regia 4-ply
  • Austermann Step (with Aloe)
  • Opal Socks
  • Flotte Socks
  • Hot Socks

And, what better way to experience the new sock yarns, or knit from your newly dyed Sock Blank, than to take Louise’s Toe Up Sock Classes?!?  If you can join us, we have room available in the class.  Please call to register at 519-474-0403.

With sock knitting being all the rage, let’s experiment with different ways of knitting them.  Toe up socks are easy to do, and if you think about it, make a whole lot of sense.  By knitting your socks from the toe up, you can be guaranteed a perfect fit because you can try them on as you go AND , more importantly, if you are running shy on yarn, you are guaranteed of getting at least both of your feet knit – no more different coloured toes!  Basically your yarn supply will determine whether you are making ankle socks or knee socks!  The great thing about this workshop, other than knitting socks, of course, is that you will learn a wonderful new cast-on, a new way to turn a heel, and a neat new way to cast-off; and, you guessed it… you don’t need to graft the toes when you are finished!
Rated:  All Knitters
Pre-Requisite: Knowledge of Knit and Purl Stitches; Beneficial to have worked on double pointed or 2 circulars

And, lastly, we have some new project bags & needle holders from ...

Made by hand from a local artisan.  “Collen’s Creations” offers:
  • Double Pointed Needle Holders / Work in Progress Holders – 6” or 8” sizes
  • Zipper Project Bags – sizes small, medium & large
  • Drawstring Project Bags – sizes small, medium & large
  • (Fabric colours & pattern choices will vary with each new shipment)

Hurry in to see the newly arrived selection of Bags & Holders!!

Please Note:
The store will be CLOSED on Monday, May 22nd
for Victoria Day and re-open Tuesday at 9:30 am.

What fibre fun have YOU had lately???
